MassSLPwannabe reacted to sfarim in Worcester State + Bridgewater State
I wish you luck with Emerson. This is really a bizarre time. I hope that we'll be able to start grad school as planned.
If you do end up going to Worcester, I look forward to meeting you!

MassSLPwannabe got a reaction from sfarim in Worcester State + Bridgewater State
I think im like 75 percent sure I would go to Worcester. I also got into Emerson but its literally more than double the cost... and I really don't want to be in a ton of debt.. since also i think were about to enter a crazy recession lol. But I am hoping to hear back to see if I got any grants or anything

The email I get from USPS shows that I'm getting a letter from Worcester State that was postmarked on March 13. Most likely, it's a decision letter.

MassSLPwannabe got a reaction from Verlona in How many Schools did you apply to?
I applied to 10, and have been accepted at 1, and wait listed 4 so far. If possible, I would probably only apply to 5, just because i have already spent thousands of dollars applying between CSDCAS fees, schools personal app fees, sending GRE to every school, and sending two transcripts to every school

I got accepted to BU, and will most likely not accept and attend, so hopefully my spot can be reserved for you! Wishing you the best of luck!

I grew up in the suburbs of Boston and I currently live in Boston. As far as cost of living, it is pretty expensive. I live with 3 roommates in Brighton and we each pay around 830 per person, not with utilities. I think those prices are pretty average for popular cities. There is affordable housing, you just have to have roommates, and be willing to take the train for 30 mins to get downtown. As far as getting around, there is the subway( The T) and BU is right on the green line. There are also a lot of bus lines. It seems like they try and accommodate if you want a clinical placement accessible by public transport, but I guess its not a guarantee. With any big city, with a big traffic problem, its just important to give yourself time to get places.

MassSLPwannabe reacted to SLP97 in Emerson College Interview
I'm a first year grad student and I got invited to interview at Emerson. I didn't end up choosing to go there, but I'm more than happy to chat about their interview (or just interviews in general). Emerson's interview was different from all the other schools I did interviews. They asked me nothing related to speech pathology and asked the most obscure questions. Feel free to message me if you want more info!

Just got invited yesterday for an interview at Emerson! While I am excited, I am also super nervous. Does anyone have any tips?

MassSLPwannabe reacted to Einnob in ASHA requirements
Hello!!!
I am starting my post bacc in Speech Pathology soon and I read that for the ASHA physical science requirement is now only accepting Chemistry and Physics. I plan on taking Conceptual Physics at a community college. It is different from Intro to Physics... Conceptual physics apparently has less math ( I guess an easier version of physics?)
Does anybody know if Conceptual Physics is acceptable or how picky ASHA is with the courses??
ALSO do you think grad schools will look at how I took the easier physics course instead of regular physics or chemistry? and judge...

MassSLPwannabe reacted to futurespeechieinprogress in Speech@Emerson May 2020
Hi all,
I just completed my application and interview for the May 2020 Speech@Emerson cohort last week. My advisor told me the turnaround time for a decision would be 3-8 weeks, however since I applied so early, it may be sooner. I'm excited because my advisor said the interview went well and everything I've submitted has looked good, but I'm a little worried because my undergrad GPA wasn't amazing. I graduated with a 3.1 cumulative, and my GRE scores were fairly average (I don't remember them off the top of my head ). I'm hoping my personal statement and interview will push the decision in my favor. Has anyone else received a decision yet? I would love to hear everyone else's experiences so far!
(apologies for the double post! I found this section after my initial post in a different thread and found it to be more relevant )

MassSLPwannabe reacted to wodin in Fall 2020 Applications
Hey y'all, I am applying for Fall 2020 as well. I made an account on here almost 4 years ago asking for advice about how to get into this field. I was about to graduate college with a completely unrelated degree and the advice I got here helped me figure out a plan to pursue a career as an SLP. After doing a post-bacc online while working full time I'm finally ready to put the plan into action!!! It has been a long road but I see the light at the end of the tunnel!
I applied to UGA, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, West Georgia, UTHSC, Florida Atlantic University, University of Central Florida, Tennessee State, and U. of South Carolina. My biggest fear is getting rejected from every single school after all these years and going into debt to take prerequisites. Fingers crossed!
If anyone is curious which schools will overlook a below-average GPA for good GRE scores, I'll let you know where I get accepted lol
GPA: 3.45
GRE: 169V 155Q 5.5 AW
Good luck everyone!

MassSLPwannabe reacted to estel in Fall 2020 Applications
Good luck to all of you! I'm not seeing much overlap in schools with anyone else (I'm not applying to any schools in CA), but I applied to:
University of Texas-Austin, University of Arizona, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, St. Xavier University, University of Washington (MedSLP), Vanderbilt University, University of Illinois
Overall GPA 3.9 || CSD GPA 4.0 (originally out-of-field, currently in a leveling program)
GRE 166V, 164Q, 5.5AW
I submitted my last applications on December 31 and now I'm sitting here anxiously refreshing all of the pages in the hopes that something will change even though I know programs aren't sending out decisions for at least another month...

MassSLPwannabe reacted to littlet4lks in Fall 2020 Applications
I am applying to Boston University, MGH IHP, Emerson, TC Columbia, and Northeastern University.
GRE: 156 V / 150 Q / 5 AW
GPA: 3.92 overall / 3.91 major GPA
MGH IHP is my top choice!

MassSLPwannabe reacted to sjcook in Letter of Recommendations on CSDCAS
Hope it's not to late to answer this for you, but I asked my professor about this since I was confused and she said they usually write a "general" letter of recommendation that is not directed at a specific school for CSDCAS since the letter that gets uploaded there gets sent to all the schools you apply to on CSDCAS!

MassSLPwannabe reacted to JustineSLA in SLPA license : Massachusetts + Out of field applicant
I am licensed in Mass and you have to hold a degree in the field in order to receive licensure. There is no other way around it. If you’d like to gain experience as an SLPA, you should try to work in a special ed. classroom as a paraprofessional. You will not be able to practice as an SLPA, but you will gain tons of experience with a variety of different levels of communication and can most likely observe speech therapy sessions.

MassSLPwannabe reacted to Oxbow in SLPA license : Massachusetts + Out of field applicant
Hey! I’ve been a SLPA in Massachusetts for the past three years! It looks like you can apply to be an SLPA, but you have a degree plus 18 credit hours of coursework in Speech (check this out https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2017/10/30/260cmr2.pdf ) Is there any way to take another summer class to get more credit hours? Or, could you look into other options? SLPA jobs are pretty hard to come by and many schools will be hiring pretty soon. When you apply for the license it takes them a couple weeks to get back to you, which would push off your start date for work until at least September. I’d suggest looking into teacher’s assistant/ paraprofessional jobs or ABA therapy jobs. These jobs would be a great experience because you’ll be able to work with language and communication in some capacity.

MassSLPwannabe reacted to slptobe! in Speech pathology
I think there are things that can offset low numbers, you could retake things, that's an option. What's your last 60 units gpa?
I truly did not think I would get in anywhere this year, but it happened! Something I think is important for applications is that when you are applying somewhere, make sure to mention why the program is a good fit for you. For me, I want to do multilingual stuff so I got a certificate that showed that in undergrad and tried to reflect it in my volunteer places and where I applied. And then in your personal statement, mention a few professors/faculty members you would like to work with if given the chance and why their research/specialty interests you. And if you have interviews, make sure to ask questions! When you ask good questions, they know you are interested and have a motivation to attend. If you need help, message me I would love to help in any way! You can do it!
