I think they are going to send the emails about at 4:59pm, so they can log-off and clock-out without getting bombarded with phone calls and emails for the rest of the day!

m7752ne is absolutely correct. From everything that I've read online and from conversations with DIR's and my university's grant advisor, the single most important factor is the quality of writing in your application. Apparently there are many candidates that have stellar backgrounds who "should" be a shoe-in, but who can't write very well. This was pretty surprising information to learn. 
Anyway, you select your grad school after you've been offered one of the fellowships. Most of the time universities don't really care about your GPA or GRE scores because they're concerned with the prestige of hosting Rangel and Pickering fellows. A girl from my university was offered a Rangel fellowship last year and she had a cumulative 3.2 GPA. Once the official acceptance list was released, Harvard kept bugging her to the point where she completed an application just so they would stop harassing her! Many universities offer extra stipends to entice fellows to select them. I was told the only reason that a fellow even needs to take the GRE is because it's a traditional requirement for grad school admittance, and that the universities honestly don't look too closely at it.
Rest assured, if you are a lucky recipient of a fellowship, you don't have to worry much about GPA or GRE. Your energy would be much better spent focusing on your writing within the application and preparing for your oral interview. 

We're supposed to hear back from the Pickering on October 25th and Rangel on October 30th!

I hope it becomes a place where people can share pictures and videos and thoughts about their experiences and also questions about anything once their experience begins. I got the Boren AFLI Tanzania for 2019-2020 and I recently found this forum! This is so exciting! To everyone who did not get it this year, you are just as great as everyone who got it and I hope it does not deter you from applying again next year. I am so glad that this forum is very encouraging and supportive of people regardless of their status as a Boren applicant. I was wondering if you guys have a Facebook or LinkedIn so we can create a group? I want to create a Facebook group for 2019-2020 winners, and one for everyone in general so future applicants can join the group for support and advice when they start the process and start freaking out as we all did leading up to decision day. I have found only two other Boren winners for this year on LinkedIn and Instagram and the Facebook group is mostly alumni from last year and years prior. It'd be great if we could all be part of a Facebook group. Anyone who is interested can reply to this or message me directly. Thanks guys!

I got an AFLI fellowship award to Tanzania. Was told to accept or decline by May 1!
