A lot of excellent points in this thread, that I hope newly-admitted PhD students are taking to heart.  One I will add:
Take advantage of the resources at your school, not just the resources of your program.  Odds are, the people in your program won't know a thing about preparing for a non-academic job.  The vast majority of English faculty at PhD granting institutions have never held/applied for one.  But your school will have tons of resources, and quite probably a whole office, for job placement/development.  Don't dismiss those resources just because they are intended for the undergrads.  Develop a resume alongside your CV and keep both updated accordingly.  Do an internship during your program.  If you make a point of contributing just one thing to each world (ac and alt-ac) in every semester and every summer, then by the time you finish your program, you'll be ready to put your best foot forward regardless of the path you decide to walk (and you'll be better prepared to pivot if you start down a path and realize that it's not what you'd hoped).

I JUST GOT ACCEPTED TO BOSTON COLLEGE! I'm crying so hard. I'm so thankful and in disbelief, I've been shaking since I got the email. I'll be emailing shortly to take myself off of the UConn waitlist and I hope this helps someone else out. Thank you all so much for your kind words and support through this whole process. It's especially wonderful because yesterday marked one year since my dad passed away, and I can't help but feel he's looking out for me.

In at UConn!! I'm genuinely so excited and especially after getting back to back rejections from Yale and Cornell, it's amazing to know I'll have somewhere to go!! Thank you to all of you for providing such a welcoming and thoughtful place on the internet!

In at Davis!!! My first English acceptance of this cycle. Really exciting and particularly validating since I was rejected from their program in my last app cycle. I'm so happy! Funding details to come, but it feels amazing to have multiple good offers on the table.

Oh absolutely! I have one waitlist so far but pretty much implied rejections from everywhere else with only three schools left to notify at this point (and one of those is Yale LOL). The things I tell myself every day to stave off mental despair and tears:
-This cycle is competitive. Crazy competitive. Undergrads don't even have to deal with these percentage of acceptances when they're applying to Ivy Leagues, yet most of us have submitted applications to schools with acceptance rates of less than 5%. The fact that you're a strong enough scholar to even compete means that you're most likely in the right place.
-Even though it will suck (and as someone who has done 3 cycles now, it will def still suck), you can apply again. That causes me dread, too. I don't want to do this again. BUT, I took a gap year after undergrad and the year flew by, and despite people saying "if you take a year off you'll never go back!"-- yes you will. I did, many people do. If you're committed, you will try again even though the process sucks.
-Ooh boy this is the hardest one to tell myself and it's still not solidified, but your worth as a person (and as a scholar!) does not change simply because you were rejected or had a shutout. You are still smart. You are still kind. You are still dedicated, or motivated, or funny, or talented, or whatever you believe is best about yourself. People who love you don't think you're a failure. They know you are these wonderful things, and you will try again if need be, and you will still be successful regardless of the outcome.
I am perhaps just writing this post to make myself feel better, but maybe it will make some of you feel better too, even if for a fleeting second. While gradcafe undoubtedly causes me great anxiety at times, I am actually really thankful to have found this website. A lot of people on here are really kind and supportive, especially in the Lit section (shout out to this thread!!), and I find myself truly happy to see people receive acceptances, even if it means I receive a rejection, because I know they're feeling the same exact way as myself. I don't even know most of you by name, wouldn't recognize you on the street, yet we have somehow forged a small community here that is supportive and helpful and really quite wonderful.
I sincerely hope all of us receive some good news. I've seen cycles where people believe they're shutout until April 15th, or have gotten rejections from every school and then receive an acceptance from their reach/dream school out of nowhere. Anything can happen, which is both a blessing and a curse for those of us ridden with anxious tendencies. Here's to making it through these coming weeks, which I'm sure will be challenging for us all. Good luck, everyone!!!

These are great ideas, thank you. A workshop sounds like a wonderful option!
I definitely agree. You're right that it's been a very difficult time for students this semester and I've given many extensions and offered resources such as the writing center all while trying to keep the integrity of the goals and requirements. This may be proving too much for some people under a lot of stress.
And yes, always have the corporate response ready!
    Thank you

I was only an adjunct for 1 year a couple years ago, but I've have 1 or 2 unnecessarily rude students. Others might disagree with me on this, but my opinion is stick to your standard of expectations for students while being beyond kind to all of them, especially the rude ones. Remember email is a paper trail. Not that I think you would do otherwise, but always calm down before responding and respond in a way where you won't be embarrassed if your colleagues or superiors read your responses.
This semester is tough because everything is online, but if you have the time, I would go out of my way to offer opportunities for this student, and of course other students, to meet with you one-on-one, maybe via zoom, so you can work on their next paper together or go over what was wrong in this one. Maybe even suggest a writing center appointment or  organize a class where students workshop their papers with their peers (sometimes seeing a better paper or getting criticism from their own peers shakes them up).
I don't think this means you need to be a pushover or anything. You can let them know that this is what is expected in YOUR class and this is what's expected at University. The point is to get students to the level they need to be at (In the most professional way possible). Use your corporate email voice. Lol

I was asked if I would have an in-person class, so I would confirm with your school that there is at least 1 in-person class for you to take so you can answer that question truthfully. Hybrid counts as in-person as far as I know, but confirm with your international student office at your new school.
You find out immediately if you get approved or rejected, but the amount of time you need to wait to get your passport back varies from embassy to embassy. Mine took 1 business day, others take like 7-14 business days depending on the size of the population the embassy serves, I believe.
Read and re-read the instructions on the embassy's site about what you need when applying. I always take additional documents, but usually, it's just your typical passport, visa application confirmation page, $160, appointment confirmation page, 1 passport size pic, I-20 or Ds-2019, financial documents to prove you can support yourself or are supported by a sponsor (if that's not the school), and finally, the SEVIS payment confirmation page.
