I'm hoping to do INAF5244 (Terrorism and Intl Security).

For the Winter, I'm planning to register in:

5015 - Rrsch Design Method Int Affair

    5214 - Economics for Defence & Secur

5225 - Cybersecurity in Canada (I wanted to do counterterrorism in lieu of this, but it didn't work with my work schedule).

What time is your registration? Mine is at 10am.

    Mine is 1430 hrs....  ?

I was planning on Terr&Intl Sec for the Fall also.

    Winter maybe:

    INAF 5214    Econ

    INAF 5224    Intell & NatSec

    INAF 5225    Cyber in Canada

    INAF 5301     Strategic Foresight

But that all hinges on what is left at 2:30pm of course...  lol

French for sure. I took German in undergrad but obviously French is much more necessary. I'm thinking of taking the Rosetta Stone option, it seems like the most effective way to learn the language since everything will be online anyways.

Yeah, French for me also.  I was looking at Spanish or Italian just because my focus in going to be on Transnational  Organised Crime specifically in Latin America or Europe but I'll need French to get a job in Ottawa.  I didn't know about the Rosetta Stone option until they mentioned it in the meeting and it sounds like a good option...!

Yeah, my question to her was whether they were just code swapping the two classes, or also changing the timeslots so that they're not listed at the same time (in case the classes aren't "on demand")

Edit: I just realized I'm a total idiot. Since those two are 0.25 credit classes, 5017 is going to be in the first half of the semester, and 5018 in the second half, so it doesn't matter that the time is the same. I just facepalmed so aggressively that I woke/spooked my cat.

LOL  yeah, I'm sitting here talking to the screen going, " 8 hours between courses is WAY too long, need to find something to fill that gap.." ,  my dog is looking at me like I've lost my mind... And we haven't even started yet!

They did indeed :( I don't think it was accurate anyway, as it still had INAF 5011 and 5012 listed (at exactly the same time, no less), rather than INAF 5017 and 5018, which apparently are the new mandatory classes.

With that said, the class timetable builder should for this fall will be opening tomorrow (may even be available as of midnight tonight), assuming Central doesn't crash under the load.

It's open now!  And still has 5011 & 5012 listed...

PSA for NPSIAns: If you go into Carleton Central, into "Build your Timetable/Registration", you can see what courses are on offer this fall by right clicking on the term drop-down menu, using "inspect element", and changing the "option value" from "202020" to "202030" (see the attached pics). You can also change that value to "202110" to see the classes on offer next winter.

(Note, this isn't my trick... I found it here on the Carleton subreddit)

I was originally thinking of leaving my job, which would have given me time to TA. The whole COVID crisis convinced me I'd be dumb to quit a government, and work is letting me do part-time instead for the duration of school (which means I keep accruing years of service, and don't give up the 7.5 years I've racked up so far). It'll probably be more stressful than TAing, but it's also way more money than Carleton was offering me for a TAship.

As for the supervisor... I really don't know. I'm guessing you'd have to get that info from the department.

Makes sense.  I've only been working casual contracts with the Feds so I'll probably be looking at a TAship or part time as I doubt very much if I will get any OSAP grants or loans.

I'm applying to Munk and am working on the video question. I've done practice for two days for 4 hours and get frustrated as i pause/stutter when I do and my sentences are jumbled. Any tips to help with this part?

Advice from someone who has given multiple hours of court testimony.  mmh96 has good info, definitely make a list of generic replies and treat them almost like a script.  Read up on major global issues.   For practice have someone off camera when you are recording yourself on a laptop and talk to them.  This allows you to approach it as a conversation and not as an interview per se.  Do some research, gather a general sense of what they have asked others (if that is allowed).  Have your practice partner selection a question from the different topics you provide them.  I know 3 minutes might seem like an eternity when you actually do it, but really it's not that long if it is a subject you know and are interested in.  It's basically an elevator interview...

And for the love of God breathe.  I saw fellow officer pass out on the stand because he wasn't breathing properly.  Take 4-5 deep breathes before starting and breathe at a comma and at the end of every sentence.

(caveat here: I haven't applied to Munk so I don't really know what the procedure is.  Whether they just provide a question or is there an actual interviewer...)

Ok found this on the Munk website...

    • Applicants are required to answer one randomly selected question. The questions are related to issues in global affairs. Applicants have 5 mins to prep their answer and 3 mins to record their response.
    • Once your response has been recorded you cannot go back and record another one. Applicants have the opportunity to practice on three questions before they record their response.

I think I'll be taking them one at a time! I've never taken an econ course and am a little intimidated so I think i'll just take it slow :)

If you are doing them thru Carleton online, they are pretty straightforward.   Prof. Joseph was excellent.  Any time i had a problem I went to see him at the campus and he was really helpful.   (I struggled with Econ 1001 as I'd never done an econ course before but still got a B+.  Not happy with that but I'm not really a good online student so... lol )

    Hi guys,

NPSIA applicant here, still at “Recommended for Assessment” stage. Officially confirmed with NPSIA that faculty hasnt reviewed my application as of today. Anyone in the same situation? I was also wondering, does the fact that the admissions committee preliminary reviewed my app and has referred to Faculty mean that I have passed minimal requirements like GPA? Does the admissions committee fail applicants on their end?

    Thank you!

Yeah I'm in the same boat...  The Carleton Central just changed and I have my specialization but no funding package as of yet...

My app still says in review by the department but my specialization has updated to conflict analysis and resolution. Personally kinda bummed out about that because foreign policy was my first choice, dont even think I put conflict in my top five.

Wonder how typically people choose to not do the specialization at all and if it's impossibly difficult to get into classes marked with the field designation

Damn... I'm not holding out much hope for getting mine then as I don't have change to my app yet.

I wonder if that is possible?  The students in the specialization would probably get first choice but I'd bet there is room for other students.

The "Research Scholarship" is sort of like an RAship. Kailey Wright explained it to me yesterday:

"It is a scholarship associated with work with a faculty for one semester @ 10 hours a week or two @ 5 hours a week. You will be contacted by your assigned faculty member directly to determine how you would like to allocate this. It is different from an RA position because you are not necessarily paid on a fixed hourly rate, it is a lump sum scholarship that is disseminated to you in installments. For example, if you choose to work 10 hours for one semester, you would receive four installments over the semester (Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.) to the total amount of your scholarship, or eight installments for the full year."

    Good explanation, thanks!

    NPSIAs applicants:

i just got my funding info, says I have around 5.5K in teaching assistant!

question for you all, I also got 6.5K as a ' research scholarship' and 3.5K as a 'departmental scholarship 2'. So from what I understand, I got 10K in scholarship as well as 5.5K as a Taship for a total of about 15K, but I got no RaShip. Am I correct? Is research scholarship the same as RaShip?

trying to understand to difference between these ! :)

    Congrats!

I get it. Still, it seems to me that 10-11 classes in 3 semesters are pretty manageable (I already have a master on my end so I've done it before). I'm also pretty sure you would be able to network and all during that time, but hey, that's just me!

Hey if you can pull it off, good luck!   Depending on funding I'll probably have to work part time...

  14. 10 minutes ago, theGoodGhosts said:

I suppose, but I think then you'd miss out on the co-op program. Also, the workload might be a bit hefty.

EDIT: Missed the question about how many classes per semester. I believe the standard is 3. Obviously they're a little more intensive than undergrad classes, but there's also the issue of TAships and RAships that take up a lot of time and energy in their own right.

From what I've been told if you do no co-ops, no TA-ing, and do summer courses etc, you would be able to finish within a year.  But one of the reasons I chose NPSIA is the networking and co-op opportunities there.   10-11 course in a year at a masters level would be difficult for me.

Yeah. Found out about it from Twitter yesterday, and totally spaced on posting it here until right before the event :( Sorry!

    It was pretty good.
The former head of CSIS Dick Fadden gave a short talk, and I got to chat with a couple NPSIA students.

Damn!  lol...  Ah well serves me right for not checking the events page and twitter..

If anyone’s in Ottawa, Philippe Lagassé (NPSIA prof) and Thomas Juneau and Srdjan Vucetic (GSPIA) are releasing a book tonight at Chateau Laurier and giving out 50 free copies. The book is titled “Canadian Defence Policy in Theory and Practice”

Damn... Just saw this... Did you go??
