I posted an interview result about Berkeley, so I'll update/clarify: my POI reached out for a "quick chat," which I thought meant interview - but it ended up being a short clarification plus some unofficial good news...they are recommending me for admission to the doctoral program, but wanted to check whether I was open to entering through a different program than the one I had submitted my application to.

I'm holding in all my excitement until there's an official admissions offer, but I'm very hopeful!

And, for everyone who got anxious because I posted "interview" for Berkeley - I'm not sure that is a regular part of their admission process; it might be only when they need more info, as in my case. Best of luck to everyone during this nail-biting time of year!

Thank you for this information and congratulations! That’s very good news. If you don’t mind, can I ask which program that you applied to?

UC Berkeley just started their spring semester today (aka - they have been on break). I think decisions should start coming in between mid-late February!

But I noticed on the results page, someone already got interview invitations early this month.

Generally, programs don't narrow down candidates through a large number of interviews; they largely narrow down candidates and then fine-tune through interviews. I was emailed by a professor I had expressed interest in working with; I don't imagine most professors want to spend time interviewing more than a short-list of potential candidates. Getting an interview is a good sign, of course; it doesn't guarantee acceptance and it doesn't guarantee any funding, but it's an encouraging step in the right direction. :) Good luck to you and I hope the interview goes well!

Thank you, I hope your interview goes well as well!?

I didn’t apply to UCSB but I did to UCSD and was emailed about an interview last week. That certainly doesn’t mean all interviews have been arranged, of course.

I just got an interview invitation from UCSD yesterday. I am wondering what the acceptance rate will be like for people who got an interview

AJM , RM and CSO.  I think it’s down to AJM at this point.  I know CSO from another project and she said she is going on sabbatical and not taking students.  RM  was undecided.  I was actually referred to AJM by her.  I really loved AJM and we have a lot in common.  Fingers crossed we all get where we are meant to be.  Gosh I’m getting impatient ?

Oh no, sorry to hear that AJM would not take students, but hope you will still get interview from other two professors! Have you heard anything from other schools?

This nearly happened to me and I can empathize with the stress that you must be feeling. Can you call? Any chance you have a phone number other than their office number? I would send an email tonight, and maybe even a couple tomorrow. It is urgent, afterall.

Thank you for the quick response. I don't have her phone number, only her email. I will send her another email tomorrow, but I am not sure if she will check her email during the weekend or not, especially it's Thanksgiving weekend! I hope she doesn't do this on purpose.

  8. I sent an email to remind this professor last week and she asked to remind her before the deadline. And so I send another reminder early this week, but she didn't respond my email. The deadline is this Sunday and some schools told me that they wouldn't accept any letters after the deadline. I am really worried about this now? I

What can I do if this professor doesn't submit the letter by the deadline!!!?

  9. Why some schools only send emails to the recommenders after you submit the application?? But I will need more time to edit my statement of purpose.

That's too troublesome. I am worried that my recommenders will not feel happy about this.?

It's almost always separate links, unless it's a medical school system. I was told that some of those links can be annoying - asking a bunch of redundant multiple choice questions ("How strongly do you recommend this student" "on a scale of 1 to 5, how would you rate this applicant's enthusiasm/dedication/maturity/knowledge, etc. etc." ) or just general web glitches.

It sounds like your recommender is not experienced with these submission systems, so if you could, warn them about these potential issues and ask them to submit things a bit before the deadline. But also let them know explicitly that you as an applicant have no access to that link and do not know whether/which schools will have those annoying questions.

Thank you so much for your help!!! Yeah, I know at least one school is going to have those multiple choice questions....
