  1. Hello Future Social Workers!

Hope all are well & healthy. Times are  uncertain, as many of us prepare our moves and lives for grad school. I wanted to start a thread where we could all brainstorm, vent, share and discuss whether or not we will be pursuing a masters or not this fall.

How is everyone feeling? Has anyone heard back on whether their program will be online or not? Is anyone in favor of an online-program? Are you guys worried about field placement options? Do you guys think if classes will be online, we can qualify for lower tuition cost?

Please share any thoughts, would love to hear from other candidates.

That's what they say, some others here have gotten replies but they were later than the date of Feb 15th so they may be backed up

Ahh. I know a lot of their decisions came out in lots of waves this year, so I would just sit tight and not freak out until the 3/15 deadline. Because they have to render a decision by then, unless it falls on a weekend or something. lol

I think they just have a huge applicant pool this year! Seems like 80% of this thread only applied there.

Has any UChicago hopefuls heard anything back yet? I applied by the Jan.15th deadline and am going crazy, now I'm second guessing every aspect of my application lol

Will they be releasing decisions by Mar 15th?

Hello! I also applied to Rutgers MSW and receive feedback of admission about a week ago! Have you heard back yet? Has anyone else received admission for Rutgers MSW?

I heard back Around Dec 6, 2019 and was accepted. I got an email notifying me. I reached out a couple weeks ago to decline. The process took about 5-6 weeks I believe. I also applied REALLY early. When did you apply?

Thank you so much for responding! This information was really helpful. If you don't mind sharing, when did you submit your application for both schools? For UMB, I sent it around the first-second week of Jan. For GMU, I sent it back in November but when I called in a couple of weeks ago, they said they implied that they start review on application deadline and that it will take about 8 weeks... GMU is making me thinking it's a lost cause at this point lolol

For FAFSA, as of this morning, they told me that the schools' financial aid office would tell me if I was eligible for any federal loans. For the unsubsidizied loan, is that something we sign up/apply for on the FAFSA website if we qualify for it? How do we get into the process of getting the unsubsidized loan?

I applied to GMU in early October and heard back mid October? Although once I inquired about further info, like class schedule, aid, email set up etc, they were very unorganized and virtually never got back to me. I crossed them off as an option a while ago - so I stopped following up. For UMB I applied early October (10/11) and Heard back mid Nov (11/22ish).

As long as you fill the FASFA form out, you should be eligible for the general federal unsubsidized loan I mentioned. You do not need to sign up for anything specifically, as they determine what they can offer you and how many loans they offer. The one I mention is the the base one they offer to every grad student. If you want to know specific amounts, call your schools FASFA office and they should be able to tell you. Another loan FASFA can offer is called grad plus loan, but that one requires a credit check I believe.

I think every U.S. Citizen qualifies for FASFA and certain eligible non-citizens.

I emailed financial aid at columbia asking how I can be reconsidered for a scholarship and informed them of a competing offer. I was told that I must complete FAFSA in order to even receive any scholarship, but I didn't think this was the case. can anyone share any info? thanks! :)

Most schools use your FASFA information as a benchmark on what their grad program wants to award you. CU was able to revise my scholarship offer and is administered through the FASFA office, so maybe that is why they are asking for you to fill it out? (For instance - the revised scholarship did not come from the admissions team, rather I got the letter from the FASFA team). However, I am sure the admissions team was the one to approve it for disbursement.

Hope that helps or makes sense.

    Hi guys!

I've been a long time lurker on this discussion post and I am so glad that we have this community to talk about our applications! Congratulations to those who have been accepted to their top choices!

Currently, I have been accepted to University of Pittsburgh with a 12k scholarship (renews every year) but I will most likely decline their offer. I am still waiting on GMU and UMB, which seems like not a lot of applicants here have applied to lolol.

I have a question about FASFA based aid. Did your acceptance letters include if you guys were eligible for federal loans and work study? Or do we receive that separately/have to contact financial aid office to find out? I'm a first generation college student so I am a bit behind about the working of financial aid.

Hey there, I applied to GMU and UMB. I heard back from GMU within a few weeks (fairly fast), and I heard back from UMB after 6 weeks. UMB does not award any scholarships until March, so you would not see it in your letter. GMU did not offer or even mention anything in regards to scholarships and I did not ask. No acceptance letter of any program mentioned Loans/Work study, FASFA is completely a different entity of the school. However if you fill out FASFA, you qualify for unsubsidized loans in the amount of $20.5k, and any additional loans may require a credit check. Work study will be offered there too if you requested you were interested and the school has availability.

    Hope this helps,

I did at Penn and am still waiting! They say 3-4 weeks for review

Awesome! Let us know if it ends up well for you.

I am surprised schools are taking that long, as some people would need to see the revised amount before accepting?

    Good Luck!

Hey everyone! I have been reading this thread on and off for about a week and thought I'd finally join the convo. Let me introduce myself- my name is Jen, I'm in my early 30's and am changing careers...sort of. I'm finishing up my masters degree right now at Northwestern University, where I've been working on the Master of Public Policy and Administration with a focus in global health. My bachelors is a double major in psych and broad field social science from UWSP a long time ago (yeah, Wisco, represent! haha). Career wise, I plan on working as a clinical social worker with victims of trauma, torture, human rights violations, those who have been exposed to war and genocide environments etc. I'll basically be combining my policy masters with the MSW and working on both sides, but I'll be making clinical social work my main focus. Background wise, I've done a lot of international volunteer work with refugees and those in poverty, I travel abroad now a lot as a coach with an international program, and I also have a long background with marketing for social justice oriented non profits. I'm also a crisis counselor at Crisis Text Line, which I love and highly recommend doing if you want some remote counseling experience.

For those of you recently accepted to Columbia- Congrats! I actually was supposed to start their online MSW (two year) this January, and was going to juggle the rest of my Northwestern Masters alongside one or two Columbia courses, but after orientation in January I decided that was a horrible idea, and I declined my admission. I then applied to the University of Michigan for Fall 2020 (16 month program) and am really hoping to attend. I got my application in literally just before midnight on Feb. 1st, their priority deadline. It sounds like some of you have heard back from Michigan already who applied around Feb. 1st? I'm anxiously waiting.

Looking forward to connecting with everyone here!! Hopefully I'll hear from Michigan soon :)

    Jen

You sound amazing, good luck with UM! And keep us posted :)

    Hi all-

I just submitted my appeal to CU for increased financial aid. I was accepted into Rutgers and BU, but have not received financial aid information from them yet so do not have competing scholarships. However, Rutgers is significantly cheaper. My appeal was pretty simple- I just stated that I had been accepted into other area schools in which tuition was lower and that CU is still my top choice, but their tuition is a challenge. I also mentioned that I will be leaving my full-time job and moving across the country, which will be a financial hurdle in itself. I wasn't able to include any other competing scholarship info to match ?

Long story short, for those who appealed to CU (tagging @SWColumbia - btw, thank you for your help with the appeal information in general- it was so helpful :) ) how long did it take for you to hear back? The response said two weeks but I am hoping it's less than that because I really want to submit my deposit and make it official!

Thanks guys- congrats to all who received acceptances today. and those who received disappointing news- keep hanging on. I've been there- it's corny, but I have realized that if it's meant to be it will be.

I heard back after 5 business days, so about a week!

Thank you! I'm shocked. I'm from a small town in western Kansas that no one has heard of, with the worst funding in the state. In my town, everyone goes to the hometown college and it was a big deal to even move 3 hours away. My mom sobbed when she found out I got in. She had me really young and gave up her education for me. :) I feel overwhelmingly grateful today.

I am so overjoyed for you Madison! Congratulations very well deserved!!
