When I work up the energy to send an email to SSHRC tomorrow, I'm going to mention how rude it is to do this.

I was chatting with a friend who's done a ton of SSHRC adjudicating today, and they said that they give CGS to the top people to try to convince them to come back to a Canadian institution. Technically, I think, we might be able to shop around, say we have funding and switch to a Canadian school (I'd never do this though, love my program!).

I’d also be curious to know how it works. Does it go by committee or by subcommittee? For example, would they combine all applications in a certain overall committee (e.g., committee 4) for a waitlist or would the waitlist be based only on your position in your subcommittee?

I believe (don't quote me on this though), that they don't officially waitlist anymore and that they just go to the next applicant if someone declines an award (either because they got Vanier or aren't pursuing the degree anymore etc). So no official waitlist, just next person up. 13 spots is close, I hope you get it!!

Yeah, it's my first year applying. I'm finishing up my master's degree and my score was 8.71 and the last funded in my committee was 8.85. 88/160 and they funded 75.

  3. How do you know if you're waitlisted? I'm 13 spots away from the last funded application. I'm really conflicted about what to do. I have until this Friday to give my decision for continuing to the a PhD program. If there's a good chance of getting off a waitlist maybe I'd accept my PhD offer, but if not I'm strongly considering ending at the masters level.

Got in using this link to reset the password, then login and then copy and paste the link from the email, worked for me!

    https://ensemble.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/_layouts/15/SD.UserSupport/ForgotPassword.aspx

I followed your directions, and I was able to get into something, but then what? I clicked the link that says, "SSHRC Extranet for Applicants," and it says Access Denied. What do we click once we've reset the password?

    Hi everyone,

I too just received an email from SSHRC saying my results are posted to the extranet. But the link provided does not work.

    What a joy.

I got the email as well, but both links bring me to the exact same page. There is nowhere to register on that page. What the heck!

My classmate (same program and institution) just got the email about this ~10 min ago, but my inbox is empty. It’s odd they’d send them at different times. Anyone else still waiting for the email?

It is something else. If I remember correctly, last year they sent an email early April to say that we would be receiving an email to set up the extranet (what an unnecessary hear attack that email caused) and then they sent out the extranet info at the end of April (I got it April 28) and the results were already uploaded when I signed in.

Good luck everyone, the closer it gets to the last week of April, the harder the wait! FYI, this is my third time applying, first time didn't make it out of the university, last year made it to the final round with a relatively high score (close but no cigar). Just remember it is not a reflection on the worth of your scholarship if you don't get it (or so I keep telling myself :-))

Okay, good to know. Thanks! Sorry . . . first time applying, so I have lots of questions. Do you get to see your scores when you see your result?

Hi all, just sharing the anxiety. I've seen that last year the results only came late April/early May, hoping this doesn't happen again! First time applying here! Good luck everyone!

It's my first time applying as well. I've read that for some individuals May is the earliest start date, so I'm not sure how that would work if results weren't released until the end of April/early May.

  9. Just curious . . . anyone know if SSHRC, CIHR, and NSERC release all of the results on the same day or do they get released on different days depending on which funding agency you applied to?

Hi, I'm kinda freaking out because my application was forwarded by my institution last December to national SSHRC. I went into my portal this evening to take a look and saw that my CV updates I did hadn't saved, and therefore were my Master's SSHRC CV information (which I've done quite a few things since...like finish my MA and move across the country - the old address was saved on, too). I was wondering if I'm completely screwed on this now and won't get SSHRC. I know I had a super strong proposal and am now worried about this CV issue. I don't know what to do and would really appreciate any guidance anyone may have.

I’m not sure I’m understanding the problem. The cgs-m application required the CCV and the portal for the cgs-d awards is completely different than the one for cgs-m. It sounds like you think you didn’t update the doctoral portal CV section with all your recent info? I probably wouldn’t stress too much if that’s the case. I’ve read that some applications get viewed for 5-8 mins, and given the scoring criteria, I can’t see that making or breaking an application. Provided that you had to hit the “Verify” button, I’m not sure they could do anything for you at this point. If your application got forwarded then your raters obviously didn’t see an issue and felt you had a strong application. Also, I know that when I finished my application all files were merged into one pdf. I saved that pdf, and so I can see exactly what I submitted. If you saved that pdf document then you should be able to see exactly what you submitted, and you can check what is on the CV section.

Did anyone else’s application disappear in the portal? Mine did. I can only see my web CV now and, under applications, there is nothing. Is this the normal process?

Mine disappeared in February, or at least that’s when I noticed it. The CV section is still visible to me. It’s my first time applying, as I’m finishing my masters, but from what I’ve read it’s normal.

I personally am having an extremely hard time understanding this. Why not make the waitlists longer then? And why are so many people considered "backups"?

This is only a guess, but I suspect they limit the number of people on waitlists so they don’t give people false hope of getting in. Given that they keep other lists/backups, it sounds like occasionally they pull beyond the waitlist, but I don’t think it’s common. I suspect so many people are backups because it ensures they fill the program in the case that an unusually high number of people decline. Last year for U of A SCCP they took 5 people, and they accepted 8 in my cohort, so there’s already so few people they accept into a program in a given year that it’s unlikely they’d need to fill several spots after acceptances. For CP, I believe they took 10 people last year. If I remember correctly, I think the numbers worked out to 6 course-based and 4 thesis-based students.

  13. Their website says April, but they don’t provide a specific date in April, or at least I couldn’t seem to find one on the website. I’m hoping it’s earlier rather than later in April, as the availability of funding or lack thereof will inform my next big decision. I’ve applied to continue to the PhD program at my school following my master’s degree, but I’m undecided until I know more about the funding situation.

Does anybody know the norm for uAlberta's SCCP program in terms of timeline, interviews(or lack thereof), method of communication, etc...?

They don’t do interviews. Some supervisors may meet you for an interview beforehand if you ask, but they cannot use anything from the interview as part of the admissions process since an interview is not a formal admission requirement.

For the 2020 intake, acceptances went out Feb 13th. For the intake last year, acceptances went out in March. I’m not sure what their timeline is this year for the MEd, but PhD applications for their SCCP program are due Feb 15th, so I suspect they’ll be done with their MEd decisions by then or shortly after.

For admissions, once they’ve made a decision, you’ll find your admission status in your portal along with a letter.

I still have not gotten any responses from programs that I applied, but I thought I'd post which school I have applied this cycle.

    - UofT(OISE): SCCP

    - UBC: SACP

    - UofA: SCCP

    - McGill: SACP

    - University of Windsor: Clinical psychology (Child stream)

I'd greatly appreciate it if you could let me know anybody who knows about the timeline of interviews/have heard from these programs listed!

Hey, I’m a current student in the U of A SCCP program. Acceptances last year were released around early/mid March (due, in part, to the pandemic from my understanding). The year prior the acceptances were released around mid February.

  16. Not an application question per se, but for doctoral applicants on this form, did you apply for CGS-D / doctoral fellowships? If so, perhaps you can provide some clarification. My SSHRC portal shows an end date, so I’m not sure if this means my application is going to the next round in the national competition or if I’m done at this stage. Any ideas? This is what I see on my end (see image below).

    Hi Everyone.

This is my second time applying at the doctoral level. My application was also forwarded to the national competition.

I emailed my school and asked about my ranking at the institutional level. Apparently I was ranked 8th out of 60. Do you know how much this institutional ranking translates to the final outcome ? Im fairly sure that those ranked in the top 3 at large research universities like McGill are almost guaranteed to end up receiving the grant, but I havent seen much written about this on Gradcafe. Would some ranked 8th have a shot lol ? Im not sure how to read this information.

Thanks in advance if you know anything.

Hmmm, it's interesting they shared your ranking with you. I don't think the initial ranking matters much, as I thought the initial rankings at the university level are used to determine whose application gets forwarded based on the quota / allocation / cutoff. I could be completely wrong though. I'm a novice to the whole process. At first, I didn't even even know I could apply this year because I'm still finishing my master's program. Preparing a funding application for doctoral studies was a wild ride, especially because I had practicum, coursework, work, and volunteer responsibilities happening at the same time. Ultimately, I'm just pleased I finished the application.

Does the school pysc at UofC do interviews? Also when do you guys think McMaster will send out interviews for the MSc in psychotherapy program?

I also haven't heard anything back from UofA, UofOttawa or UofT... (but I'm pretty sure they don't do interviews for their counselling programs)

I've heard mixed things about the interview/no interview for SACP (school psych) at UCalgary. Personally, I was accepted to their SACP program in 2020 (early Feb) and they never interviewed me. That said, I think they interview some people, so it may be on a case-by-case basis. I never ended up attending there though, so I really don't know much more about it.

Too early to hear anything from back from UAlberta . . . I don't know much about the other programs, so I can't comment on the others.
