the97kid reacted to willmpioneer in Guelph, Ontario, Canada
Guelph is a great city. I've only walked through the on-campus family housing once, but found that it was quite nice compared to such housing at others universities (it has a playground, it's near a little forest, etc). I'd have to know how much they are charging for family housing to compare, but compared to the residency fees I know they get for shared student dwellings, off-campus housing is generally the much cheaper option. It is nice to not feel sectioned off from the rest of the community, but at the same time the family housing would automatically put you into a community of other grad students, and their partners and children.
I lived in the downtown area in a 2 1/2 bedroom upper floor of a Victorian house (with a yard that backed onto the river) for 750 a month - which is probably cheaper than you'll find, but such gems do exist. My sister lives with her son and partner in a similarly priced house/apartment not too far from downtown. The difficult thing in getting nice, roomy, inexpensive places when you live out-of-town is that they don't always advertise in the paper or post on craigslist: they just put a little sign in the window. If the university is charging over $1200 a month for housing, it is probably worth your while looking elsewhere.
I'd recommend living in the downtown area. Areas to avoid: the Willow area. A neighborhood called "the Ward" (historically a working-class Italian neighborhood) used to have a reputation for being a bit worndown and unsafe, but is now fairly vibrant and populated mostly by students, musicians, and elderly homeowners. It is one of the cheapest neighborhoods to find a house for rent. There are a couple of streets in the ward that have a bad rep, but Guelph is overall very safe. In 2009, Statistics Canada named Guelph "Canada's Safest City." There are many parks and elementary schools in the downtown area, and the university is only a few minutes away.
I'd be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Not necessarily, no. Your interests might not be a perfect fit for a university, they may have had a small group of students being admitted this year (quite common for 2021), and much, much more.
For grad school, they're really looking at who the applicants are and how well they fit the faculty. That means that it really depends on who's on faculty, what your interests are, how many students the school is admitting, who else applies, etc.

I was rejected from UMichigan but got into Stanford which is like the best department for my subfield. Don't lose hope!

Hi!
I'm looking for the same program and same country too.
TBH I applied last year to several MS in Statistics programs in Canada and got accepted to one of them. But due to COVID they deferred my admission and recently told me to re-apply in order to be considered for the Fall Term 2021. So I will be applying this year too.
If you'd like to have a chat, drop me a message.
Cheers!

the97kid reacted to SPIWizard in A "what-if" 2020 profile evaluation
Hi all, I just posted this in the results thread. I'm pursuing a masters to strengthen my eventual PhD application, but I've always been curious where I could have ended up if I applied straight to US PhD's this cycle. Assuming a decent GRE score, what range do you all think I would've had a chance at? I suppose I would be considered international if applying to the US?
-
the97kid reacted to SPIWizard in Profile Evaluation MS Applicant
Firstly yes I believe they are taking international applicants now. I think they always took international applicants, but because the program used to be funded, there was likely a very limited number of international enrollments.
I don't think it is a good program for your purposes. It offers no research opportunities, aside from a small project. Almost every masters programs in Canada give the option of doing a thesis over 2 years. If you choose to come to Canada, you will find that these 2 year programs can be very rewarding, and often your tuition will be covered. Canadian programs should recognize the ISI reputation, this will be an advantage for you. Of schools offering 2-year thesis masters, UBC has seen applicant numbers rise recently and hence acceptance rates are dipping close to 6-7% (https://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs/master-of-science-statistics) including domestic, so it will be highly competitive to get into. Waterloo's dept. is bigger and I would put it at the high end of schools you should apply to in Canada.

Actually I took my GRE just because I had applied to that one US uni.
Most of the Canadian universities do not require GRE. The one's I applied to never wanted me to submit the GRE scores at all. It is only required when you apply to the US. I don't know much about US universities tbh. More on the Canadian side.
Going for a PhD directly doesn't work in Canada you need to have your Masters done before PhD but it is not the case in US if you stand a chance you can apply directly for PhD.
I did get my profile evaluated here most of them suggested that I retake and improve my GRE score. In addition to that, to have research experience and write a strong SOP. Overall I was in a good position with my courses and all.

Wow, your profile looks significantly stronger than mine, you uave so many math courses you probably could have gone for a PhD directly, I have no idea why you didn’t get into those schools, the only thing is that your score on quant gre is low, did you get your profile evaluated here before applying what did people think? @honguyen94 this does not make me feel very good about my chances at even medium ranked schools let alone the top ones, what do you think?

Just for my information but why doesn't UofToronto take international students?
I am also pursuing my studies in Statistics so I am quite interested in your profile.
This is my opinion as a Sri Lankan applicant and this is based on the opinions I've heard from Professors who have studied abroad.
1. It's good to aim for a higher ranked uni, even my goal was to join UBC or McGill but unfortunately I was rejected from both but I got into UofManitoba with a good funding offer. It's not that I am telling you not to apply go for it. It's your choice so you need to apply to see if you will get in our not. Even though I got rejected I don't regret applying to those universities.
2. On the other hand it is also safe to have a second option in case you don't get into those high ranked universities. Waterloo is a safe and good choice in my opinion.
3. Try to contact a supervisor with similar interest and secure one before hand. It makes things proceed in a more smoother way and is convenient.
What I have heard quite frequently is that since we are international students and the universities are very competitive, if you don't have a standard good application or SOP they'll probably reject you. It's not like you've studied in the US/ Canada and then applying. What I am saying is that the chances are less of being accepted if you are an international student with an international degree. Those are just my opinions. I am sorry I cannot evaluate your profile I don't think I am in a position to but I am just giving some tips since we are having the same background and goals.

Thank you! (fingers-crossed) Good luck with your schools, too!

Hi all! I just heard from Simon Fraser (History) with an acceptance and great package. They said the deadline to let them know of my plans to accept/decline is March 20th...This is so much earlier than other schools and very soon. Is this somewhat typical with Canada? I've applied to US schools as well and all have April (and one school likely won't let me know till later in March...)

good to know I'm not the only one in misery! I have even found another place to apply as a back up. Thankfully my next weeks are very full and I found out my potential supervisor will be giving a lecture in the hospital I work at next week, so I'll sneak in and low key ask about it after the lecture. Best of luck!

Oh I am so sorry to hear about that. And that sounds quite weird to me because in most cases that I have seen, the interview doesn't get that technical.
I apologize if you got carried away because of my advice.
I hope you have other options to look forward to. Don't give up yet, and stay strong.

No problem. Best of luck for the interview and let me know how it goes.
-
the97kid reacted to GeorgiaTechPhd in Skype Interview Questions
I am assuming that the interview is in the context of admission to a program.
Some of the questions that you should be prepared to answer --
- Tell me more about your background (make sure you cover the part that is relevant to the program and/or the faculty member, and not just cover everything in it)
- A project of your liking (again cover something related to the program)
- Why have you applied to this program (say something specific to the program/school/faculty, and not the usual generic response)
- What other schools you have applied to, and what is your priority (try to answer this as honestly as possible without blowing up your chances )
- What do you expect out of the program
While there may or may not be a direct question around this, it is a good idea to read up the faculty's work, and try to relate some of your ideas/past experience with that, and just casually cite their work to let them know that you have read their work.

Hi everyone, first time poster here. I applied for an MA in Economics:
- University of Toronto
- Queen's University
Queen's is my first choice, but in the end it all comes down to funding. I did my undergrad in Math and Economics at UofT.
