Current clinical student at York here. Grad students got an email today stating that interview offers should be going out next week. I know that people will ask but I don't know ANYTHING about any candidates who are getting interview invites, including from my own supervisor, so I am of no help there.

Just an FYI from a current York student: the neuropsych stream isn't treated as a separate program during the admissions process, since anyone who is accepted into the clinical program (either C or CD) can choose to go into the neuropsych stream. So results about York re: clinical should be applicable to you!

York is always late (I think I heard on January 30 last year), and since they received so many applications this year I wouldn't be surprised if they're even later. I know of one prof who is going to interview two potential grad students in the next two weeks. (I'm a current York student.)

10000000%. I had a hell of a roller coaster ride with the school I was eventually accepted at... I didn't end up getting accepted until the very end of March, weeks after initial offers went out and when my POI said I would be accepted. It was so stressful to get my hopes up wildly, only to learn that I might not get in.

Yes. Guys, please try to protect yourself emotionally and don't consider informal acceptances or word of mouth as official until you receive something in writing. Last year I had made it to final round interviews, was the top pic by the POI but then wasn't offered acceptance because the university hadn't placed the supervisor at high enough consideration for a student. It does happen and it's out of your control so getting excited is amazing, over-preparing is great, but please please hold out until you get the call/email.

Hi friends! Just your daily reminder that if you haven't heard anything yet that's completely okay! You're fantastic!
Also, taking some time away from the forums is definitely a great thing for your stress levels especially with everything else going on.
Go binge-watch that show, get some fresh air, and whatever else it is that makes you feel better. A watched inbox never receives an email, and remember that great things will happen!

Ooh yes, from my understanding, after the shortlist is created and the POI has interviewed their candidates, it's basically up to them who to offer admission to although it does still have to be approved by the admissions committee! My understanding is that the approval by the admissions committee at that point is more of a formality than anything although they can still say no for some reason (which seems unlikely).
Yes, that definitely makes the most sense! Sorry I should have been more clear about that. York has the largest graduate psychology program in Canada apparently so it makes sense that the number of applications is huge. I didn't mean to unduly alarm y'all sorry!

Current York clinical student here. Interview invites tend to go out in the last week of January. I think I heard on January 29 or 30 when I applied last year. There is an admissions committee (I'm not sure if this is what this comment is referring to?) and they make a shortlist of candidates. Typically most profs will interview two candidates but some interview more. Last year the interview day was on February 14. Also we were only interviewed by our POI, no one else and they vary in formality. Mine was incredibly informal but most of my cohort had a more intense experience.
That being said, I'm wondering if things might be a bit later this year. I heard from my supervisor that the department received over 1000 applications this year, which is about double the normal volume.

I just heard back this morning that I received one.
I'm a former grad student there and I still get the emails meant for grad students. The department head sent an email a few weeks ago saying that all graduate classes will be held online in the fall, with the "only potential exception involves labs in our first-year assessment classes in the clinical psychology program". Haven't gotten any emails about TA-ships, but in the past we weren't emailed about that until June/July.

Don't do Yorkville. I have only heard terrible things about it, and it's incredibly expensive.
Personally, I think you need to get a psychology degree and then go on to pursue clinical or counselling the "proper" way. You should definitely take some psychology courses first before deciding that you want to pursue a career in psychology.

Hey all! Last year, someone started a reflections and advice thread, and reading it gave me valuable perspective as I went through the process this past fall/winter. Now that we're all one year older and wiser, I was thinking we can share some insights for next year's batch of applicants!

These are some things I learned from this process:
    - Don't do this alone.  Looking back at my first draft of my SOP versus the final draft after months of meeting with one of my professors for feedback, it's night and day. I would have been so lost if I had insisted on doing everything by myself. Having a good support system is so, so, so important.
    - Publications are overrated.  My biggest anxiety during the app process was that I was at a major disadvantage because I don't have any publications. However, I was pleasantly surprised that PIs seemed so interested in my prior research despite never publishing. I really do think they care more about experience and potential than publication record.
    - Recommendation letters matter WAY more than you think they do.  I was shocked by how often my letters were brought up during interviews. The non-academic content of these letters also carries a surprising amount of weight. PIs are looking for genuinely decent people that they can get along with, and they get information about your character from your LORs.
    - Interview visits aren't meant to be formal/stressful.  Every one of these visits was so fun and relaxed. I was shocked by how few candidates were left at that point and how informal everybody was. It was great just to meet so many interesting people and gain the insight I needed to make my decision.
    - You're going to end up where you belong.  I always assumed it would be impossible to get into my top programs. What I didn't realize was that since my top programs were the ones where I had the best fit with PIs' research, I would actually be more likely to get into those programs than ones where I was less of a fit. I found my perfect program match, and they found their perfect match in me!
    - You DESERVE your success.  Ultimately, as competitive of a process this is, people do succeed. That person will (at some point, if not this cycle) be you, and when it is, be proud! You've earned it.
