I graduate from HGSE SLP in 2017. I was very active on the HGSE 2016 and 2017 threads. Here is my statement of purpose for anyone to consult. Here is some admissions data I mined from the many years of HGSE threads on this forum. If these documents are helpful to you, please give me an upvote so that I will know all the hours that I spent will have been worthwhile in helping myself and others achieve our dreams.
Feel free to reach out with any questions.

ammarahasan reacted to t_ruth in How did you figure out your research interest(s)?
When I teach a first-year doctoral seminar I have my students do an activity. I have them write ten "I wonder" questions every week...I wonder whether...I wonder how...I wonder why. At first, I tell them don't even worry about the topic. You can say, "I wonder whether my dog knows when I come home from work." It can be just anything. However, these tend to converge around a topic area in their field/sub-field.
I also encourage them to ask these questions when reading academic articles. Think about what you might do if you conducted the study--what would you ask that is different? What would you want to follow up on?
For those who are in a tighter timeline (like trying to decide a research interest in a few months), I might increase the frequency of these questions to 5-10 a day instead of 10 a week. Keep a journal of them. Both the content and the form (e.g., asking whether vs. how) will be telling regarding both your research interests and the epistemic frame with which you will approach your work.
    Best of luck!

One resource worth mentioning here, I think, is the Unlikely Academics podcast. The primary audience of the podcast is people who are under-represented, from non-research intensive schools, or are first generation post-grad students. The focus skews a bit more to advocating for those under-represented from rural areas, it does try to provide information to a broader audience. It should also be paired with podcasts like Blk + In Grad School which covers some other elements. They try to address issues from how to approach applications, to the unspoken cultural norms of grad school, and even how to talk to friends who didn’t get in during a round of applications.

I'm surprised no one has taken the time to reply to your post!
Either way, each of my schools are requiring a SOP, but only one of my schools (UCLA) is also requiring a personal statement. From my understanding, a SOI/SOR are synonymous with a SOP. They both address your interests and your research. In some of my schools that I'm applying to, I see that they want a personal statement, but it is basically asking for a SOP.
All in all, I would email the program directly and see what they want.
P.S. It's funny how when I search "statement of intent for grad school" on Google, most results are about SOPs. I found this specific school's info on a statement of intent, which sounds like a SOP to me...

Hello everyone! I am a recent admit to a neuroscience/biology PhD program and made a shareable google drive with resources to help people applying for graduate school. I wanted to include a compiled list of profiles of people who successfully got into a graduate program. I have primarily bio profiles and would like to get profiles from other fields. I think this could be very helpful especially to underrepresented students or people from non research intensive schools. If you would like to contribute or be shared the drive please PM me your gmail and I can send you a template/answer any question you have about it.
Here is a link to the profiles as an example.

Right. Most places here will expect students to at least have a general idea of the sub-topic they want to study. You don't need a research plan or even research question, but what you have formed is good enough and then maybe some specific ideas you *might* like to explore that you could talk about or relate to the faculty member you are interested in working with.

Ok. That sounds like a PhD is more appropriate than an EdD. You will want to search for articles that interest you related to your topic and then pay attention to the faculty members who are authors on those articles (look at all the authors--not just the first author). Good luck!

My first recommendation would be to do an EdD rather than a Phd if you want to work as a school administrator.

If you have specific questions about writing the SoP, I'm sure people will be happy to reply, but I think it is a lot to ask of strangers to just post their SoPs here. These are personal and also required a huge amount of work. Hope you can understand what I mean. Happy to answer questions, though!
