  1. Ha! Update on the TA situation. I was informed by the department and the prof that my TA job would be sort of "student outreach" and wouldn't require any knowledge of the material. Okay, no worries!

Then, like two days later, the prof emails me to say that the TA needs of the class have been reassessed, that she can no longer use me, and that I'll likely be reassigned. It's been about 5 days since then, and I'm still attached to the class, but my "Total Hours" of work is now set at 0.

    Back in limbo! Fun stuff.

really? interesting to hear.... i've been working full time (planning on quitting when the semester starts) and doing the courses; not really an excuse, and I'm sure others are managing fine, but have found it quite hard in the current circumstances to do as well as i usually might have.

Where are you doing the class? Is it through Carleton? Or did you take the one at Athabasca?

The impression i got was that this had been happening for sometime.  Why would students going into their second year need to grab what are essentially first year courses...  I though that given the present circumstances they would expand the class sizes in order to handle the issues.

Intelligence and International Affairs is also an IPIS elective (cross-listed as IPIS 5303), so some of the spots may have been taken by students either doing MIPIS or the IPIS graduate diploma.

Hey everyone - is anyone taking technology and War or Internet Governance. I would love to connect!

Tentatively scheduled for Internet Governance! I wanted to take Technology and War, but it was full :(

Doh... disregard. I thought I'd signed up for Internet Governance, but apparently signed up for Global Public Policy as well as Humanitarian Assistance instead (?)

In addition to Hawkmoon's comment, you maintain full time status regardless of number of courses. They are opening all courses this Friday - so we can take something else just in case. That being said, I don't know why most of us did not have the ability to get into our own courses.

Since I am in IIA and courses were closed I may take a diplomacy stream course and request being switched as I cannot fullfil my specialization

You have two years to get the 3 classes needed to fulfill your specialization. I figure the two IIA fall-term classes probably filled up with 2nd year students who couldn't do them in their first year (because 2nd year students in that year filled up the classes, ad.inf.)

FWIW, they offered INAF 5204 this summer, so there's a chance it will get offered again next summer.

(Also, I think DFP might be full... the only specialization I know for sure still has space is HDHP).

Ah so are we not able to see which courses we're supposed to sign up for until July 3? Is there not like a degree requirements page??

This page shows you the required courses for the program (which are INAF 5016, INAF 5017, and INAF 5018, all in first semester)*, and if you scroll down and click on your specialization on this page, it'll tell you which of the INAF economics classes you need to take for your specialization in the Winter term.

*Note that, right now, the timetable planner is still listing INAF 5011 and 5012... those are going to renamed to 5017 and 5018 at some point between now and when registration opens.

Hey is anyone else getting "You are not a student for the selected term. Please contact the registration office" when they click "Registration getting started"?

I don't think that will change until the registration window opens (July 3). When I click "Getting Started", it still lists me as a 4th year undergrad student.

FWIW, I've never actually used the "Registration: Getting Started" page... I always just went through "Build Your Timetable/Registration". If you go through there, you can build a tentative timetable (a worksheet), and when registration opens, you'll be able to submit the classes you have on your worksheet. Pretty sure Kailey is going to go over the registration process during the webinars this coming Friday.

From an email I got on Friday from Lauren about Fall 2020 Registration (if you didn’t get the email you should probably ask to be added to the email list): “Two courses have recently been updated to the following codes – INAF 5011 is now INAF 5017, and INAF 5012 is now INAF 5018. These changes will be made by the time you are able to register on July 3, so the change may not be reflected on Monday.”

Yeah, my question to her was whether they were just code swapping the two classes, or also changing the timeslots so that they're not listed at the same time (in case the classes aren't "on demand")

Edit: I just realized I'm a total idiot. Since those two are 0.25 credit classes, 5017 is going to be in the first half of the semester, and 5018 in the second half, so it doesn't matter that the time is the same. I just facepalmed so aggressively that I woke/spooked my cat.

I think they may have patched it - do you still have the schedule for Fall/Winter?

They did indeed :( I don't think it was accurate anyway, as it still had INAF 5011 and 5012 listed (at exactly the same time, no less), rather than INAF 5017 and 5018, which apparently are the new mandatory classes.

With that said, the class timetable builder should for this fall will be opening tomorrow (may even be available as of midnight tonight), assuming Central doesn't crash under the load.

  10. PSA for NPSIAns: If you go into Carleton Central, into "Build your Timetable/Registration", you can see what courses are on offer this fall by right clicking on the term drop-down menu, using "inspect element", and changing the "option value" from "202020" to "202030" (see the attached pics). You can also change that value to "202110" to see the classes on offer next winter.

(Note, this isn't my trick... I found it here on the Carleton subreddit)

i feel the same way as you...i also have a govt job, which i was ok with leaving just a few months ago when i thought i'd being moving to ottawa and would be studying full time/TA-ing under normal circumstances (i was also really looking forward to the co-op/internship opportunities in ncr).

but the whole pandemic has made me very reluctant to give up a stable job. it's also great your workplace is also allowing you to reduce your hours, i personally don't have this option, although i'm hoping that part-time studies at npsia might be allowed (i've read its quite rare).

The orientation powerpoint from 2018 (on page 24) says that you can only change from full- to part-time under "exceptional circumstances." I think there's an argument to be made that the present circumstances as "exceptional."

Oh right, that makes sense! But how would I know who my supervisor is? ?

Also out of curiosity, what made you reconsider the TAship?

I was originally thinking of leaving my job, which would have given me time to TA. The whole COVID crisis convinced me I'd be dumb to quit a government, and work is letting me do part-time instead for the duration of school (which means I keep accruing years of service, and don't give up the 7.5 years I've racked up so far). It'll probably be more stressful than TAing, but it's also way more money than Carleton was offering me for a TAship.

As for the supervisor... I really don't know. I'm guessing you'd have to get that info from the department.
