SocialKonstruct got a reaction from sixseveneight in What to do before Fall? (Reading recommendations?)
I am probably not the right person to ask but I read a lot and it tends to be a lot of dense critical theory.
Things like bell hooks all the way to Deleuze and theoretical texts in art criticism.
For fun I have been reading Robert Coover's The Public Burning if that tells you anything

Definitely apply to Rutgers. If you want to be a contemporary artist in a more experimental slant this is your best choice without being in NY. I heard Bard was not in a good state for their MFA program.

NYAA is mostly into traditional academic art styles which is hardly my area of interest as a cutting-edge contemporary artist. If you want do an atelier style of education then go for it!

Michigan State Rejected.
Indiana was my second interview (late January) and they offered the next week so I was guaranteed to be going somewhere regardless of other results. I got lucky and knew I had a great offer in my back pocket so it was relatively a stress-free experience.
I honestly had great experiences with all of the universities, but Indiana made me feel like a priority by acting quickly and being so professional at all touchpoints. Their offer letter itemized everything I was receiving clearly and the whole experience left me impressed.
I had an equally impressive experience with Missouri. I got to meet with the entire graphic design department because they told me upfront that they loved my portfolio. They don't get many good graphic design applicants and they rolled out the red carpet for me.
I was torn between going there and Indiana but went with Indiana because I would've been leaving $15,000 over 3 years on the table and I wanted the extra money for emergencies. I had also tried to negotiate by using Indiana's letter to get more money, but they were unable to give me. My biggest thing was that I didn't want to take out loans and take on debt and I felt Indiana gave me the best chance. It could've gone either way.

hi everyone ! i am having a really hard time deciding between 2 programs in LA: CalArts and ArtCenter.
i got a great package from CalArts that ArtCenter sounds open to matching… if money isn’t a factor, which school do you recommend for an interdisciplinary artist (whose dream school was UCLA, like everyone else)?
for extra context, i got into CalArts with the integrated media concentration and am not new to MFAs, having dropped out of Bard years ago due to $$

I decided to accept the offer from Northwestern, I was looking for a heavily theoretical/conceptual program and in that regard it's hard to beat Northwestern, also the faculty are incredible and the funding package is insane, 37k with no work requirement the first year and a TA position the second year. Thank you all for the camaraderie.

Heard back from the ArtCenter financial aid office and it's a done deal.
Got I think a pretty much full ride tuition and then some. Will take out 21k/year loans for food, housing, and misc. expenses.
The journey is over and hope to see other ArtCenter folks this fall! Cheerios.

@SocialKonstruct hope you get into UCLA, there's small stipend but they do waive tuition. I'm rooting for you! Be careful with those other schools, I don't think any program is worth taking on more debt. But perhaps you come from a wealthy family that can afford it.
UGA is actually on my list, the website says 10 students are accepted to the program but it doesn't give information about how many people apply. My guess would be 200 or more which makes their acceptance rate 5% or less. I wonder if there is a fully funded MFA program that has an acceptance rate of at least 30%? Because all these other fully funded programs are basically long shots, if you get accepted to a program with a 5% or less acceptance rate you are one lucky person. And personally, I'm not trying to go to a non fully funded program just because their acceptance rate is higher.

Hello everyone, I have an update!
After evaluating my options, I have decided to attend Indiana-Bloomington! 🎉🎉🎉
I would love to connect with anyone who has also committed there. I'm a graphic designer, but I also do photography and am looking to get into printmaking!
I never heard back from Michigan State or Florida State, but I'm assuming I've been rejected. I will post the final results when they eventually come.

No, I'm feeling torn and disillusioned lol. I feel like I've been conditioned to think the next step to get to where I want to be is getting a degree, then another degree...but I'm beginning to wonder how different my life would be after the program. It feels like a gamble and I wonder if the things that I'm looking for in a program (critique, community, connections) I can simply find for myself where I am now. That being said though I have a very good offer from Tyler, and if I go, it would probably be there.

My strategy is simple. For talking about scholarships (merit usually) I would try to speak with the department. For grants and loans, financial aid office for that round.
-
SocialKonstruct got a reaction from hogii in MFA 2023 Freak Out Forum
I usually would argue based on the FAFSA but if you can, the department could help out.
For example, with SAIC, I was unable to obtain more funding so I gave up. I even submitted an online appeal and it does not work for me.
So will see how the other two schools fall out.

I was going for the art + technology programs at each of these schools.
MIT: Rejected
UCLA: No news yet (or interview)
CalArts: Half tuition
Parsons: Full tuition
Feeling very inclined to go with Parsons unless UCLA comes out of nowhere.
Looks like there are also teaching options at Parsons to help cover some cost of living in NYC.
Congrats to you all and good luck!
