This, of course, favors the already-privileged.

Haven't heard anything official but it sounds like some might be 100% online while others could be hybrid.

My diss committee has called this nothing less than the death throes of academia as we know it, which was a cheerful thought.

I did atrociously on the maths section of the GRE (only prepped for verbal, and when I say atrociously, I mean atrociously) and it didn't impact my applications. GRE results are extraordinarily unlikely to make or break an application. If you do reasonably well on verbal/AW nobody is going to give them a second glance. Concentrate on your statement of purpose and your writing sample – start many months ahead of time – and be sure to get the best references you possibly can. Those are the variables that convince professors to want you as a student, not whether you did well on the GRE. If you only apply to programs that do not require the GRE then you are legitimately shooting yourself in the foot.
Cornell has some grad students focusing on queer history & we just hired somebody who specializes in it (Stephen Vider), so you may want to check us out

This is what my department/university is doing or trying to do. Another reason why it's important to prioritize a school with a lot of resources when you're looking at programs.

Officially received my rejection from UNC today. Not a big surprise given the late date, and I'm just about decided between my two choices anyway, but this line made me think there's not much hope left for anyone still counting on being accepted from their waitlist:
"Sadly ... we won’t be able to admit any students from the alternate list this year."

Finally heard from Michigan today. They said they're not taking anyone off of the waitlist this season because of financial restraints due to COVID-19. I'm not shocked, the odds were stacked against me (in terms of the amount of people who still had to make their final decisions) and I wouldn't have been able to make an informed decision had they accepted me, but it does still sting a little bit.
Onward and upwards, I accepted my offer from Indiana University and I'll be moving to the Midwest in the summer! Good luck to anyone else still on the waitlist, I know it's rough with only one week to go, but I hope it's good news.

I am a sucker for war movies. Some of the ones I recommend are Letters from Iwo Jima,  A Testament of Youth, '71, Hacksaw Ridge, and Dunkirk.
Derry Girls is a hilarious comedy about a group of friends living in Derry during the Troubles in the 90s. I am also a fan of Peaky Blinders, The Crown, The People vs. OJ Simpson, and Band of Brothers.
There is also an infinite list of documentaries I love too.

Haven't been to NYU but unless you have $60,000 to spend right now, you are better off taking the full ride and then redirecting your specialization back to your goals once you get into a PhD program. Don't go into so much debt when the job market is the way it is now. I am going straight into a PhD program but I applied for an area of study that wasn't a main focus in my undergrad research.

Got an email from Pitt today, I’m on the waitlist! It’s not an acceptance but it’s not a rejection so I’m feeling okay, keeping my fingers crossed to hear good news by April 15th!

Oh wow, I mean, given that they haven't sent me an email saying that I've been rejected, I assumed people were continuing to wait to make a decision, but now that they've sent that out, you're probably right, that may set off the dominoes needed.

The grad program lead emailed yesterday to say they are offering students the option to defer to next year with all of their funding. He said it might be a good option for international students to consider. That could potentially get the waitlist moving.

I've been taken off the waitlist at Indiana! Just received my formal offer today and I have to say that I'm relieved/emotional/over the moon. I'm going to get a PhD!
I'm still on the waitlist at Michigan and will be sending them an email on Monday to check on my status there and to let them know that I've been offered a doctoral position at IU. Fingers crossed that I can make my final decision soon and start my journey to a PhD in the Fall!

You should try asking in the History forum. There are some people there who have experience with MAPSS and can give you advice on funding.

Did anyone (who was rejected from Columbia) receive an email from the faculty advisor in the MA in European History, Politics, and Society asking to transfer their application to that department? He wants to have a phone call this week also.

Trying to suss out if this was a wide email or a personal one.

I totally agree that this is the right decision. As I am on the East side of Washington state/western Idaho, I am concerned about getting sick myself but I'm more concerned about getting other more vulnerable people sick.
