Well hi, fellow Kyoto School fan! You should DM me, I know some people you could talk to!
With respect to PhD programs in the Anglophone world, though, the only ones I can think of are Hawai'i (as @Olórin pointed out) and Boston College (which has David W. Johnson).

FWIW, there seems to be more awareness of the Kyoto School in religious studies departments.

HootyHoo reacted to Sigaba in How much time off per year can I roughly expect as a philosophy PhD student in the US?
I am straying from my lane long enough to point out that faculty members, especially those sitting on committees, may have expectations on where a graduate student spends his/her time during the summer and that these expectations may be communicated in the subtlest of ways. The nuance can be as ephemeral as a glimmer of a smile in the eyes as a professor says "Enjoy your vacation..."
So while going way off campus may be appropriate (per policy) needed (to clear one's head) and necessary , I recommend that one have a clear understanding of what is allowed and what is expected.
The same professor who is impossible to reach when on campus and is frequently away from campus can look at you if you under perform on a significant task and salt the wound by saying something "Well, I was here all summer...if only you had been here to set up appointments to meet..."

Expect to have the flexibility to move your work load around. You call the shots. It is in your hands. No one is going to force you to work 11 months of the year.
How often do you have flexibility to go places over summer? Every year. During semester? Probably ABD (all-but-dissertation).
Financially and professionally, it is wise not to take more than a month off. But you are given freedom. I know grad students who have 4 months per year off (3 mo. in summer, 1 mo. in January). I think it is foolish to do so, but this just tells you that you have a lot of wiggle room if you want to take it.
Some students will say "Don't run the rat race. Take your break as long as you want! It is good for your mental health!"
Sure. You can. And there may be seasons when it is necessary. But lemme say that advice to make it the norm to take months off usually comes from people who end up dropping out before they finish. Why? because they didn't take their work seriously. Lacking excellent work habits. Failing to make and stick to a long-term goal of getting a tenure-track job. They don't work on research or writing over summer or take advantage of the various short breaks to get caught up on work; they just fall further behind. When they realize they have wasted their time and they need to finish major milestones in their PhD, they just drop out. The truth is, for better or worse, you must work significantly harder than average to remain competitive on the market.
But is any department forcing you? No.
A month a year is more than reasonable.

Never mind.  I accepted an offer from Marquette with funding and tuition waiver on the same day it was received - April 20, 2020.  Thank you.  I guess that clears it up on my end.

Here's my story, if it helps, from Spring 2018.
Brandeis: Notification of waitlist from Kate Moran on March 28. Acceptance on April 9, with $10k possible extra need-based funding, plus TAship, plus $10k extra because they were "especially impressed" with my application. (I have no idea what that means; it could just be standard.)
Western Michigan: Notification of acceptance from Dan Dolson on March 7, but waitlisted for funding. Pinged Dolson on April 13 and gave him the offers I was considering. Got a funded offer on April 14.
UW—Milwaukee: Notification of waitlist from Waylon Jennings Smith on March 16. Rejection on April 17.
Georgia State: Notification of rejection from Tim O'Keefe on March 1.
Everything is so dependent on who does what when, so I imagine the timeline can be pretty much anywhere for a given person.

Accepted University of New Mexico's M.A. offer. Virtually sitting in on Dr. Paul Livingston's Sense and Possibility class. Honestly, pretty stoked to see a course that discusses Deleuze and Frege. A lot of the conty-analytic divide is a bunch of nerdy infighting and pearl-clutching. If I get better offers from CSU Long Beach or CSU L.A., it's going to be a really tough decision because I really like the faculty at UNM, the interests of the department align well with my own, and the students seem to be of a higher caliber than other programs I was accepted into.

This is not the place for this and this comment is irrelevant and annoying, and please don't neg me. But there is a paper out there called "Possible Girls," about (I think; I've never read it) how if modal realism is true, then there are actual worlds where lonely people have partners.

@Ikari Gendo Oh, you underestimate the morbid imagination of analytics (yes, I know, #NotAllAnalytics, etc., etc.). For example:
"Are the Magi Really That Wise? Rethinking the Superintelligent Leviathan" "Who Counts as Human? On Evas and Dummy Plugs" "Shinji's Final Vision: Possible World or Wishful Thinking?" "Asuka's Epistemic Arrogance: Virtue or Vice?" Or, to salute @711fanatic's intuition:
Is Rei Really Rei? Gappy Existence and Kripkean Names Examples could be multiplied ad nauseam/infinitum. (Yes, I'm being overly salty because it's fun.)
As for the analytic/continental synthesis, it has a name: Paul Ricoeur. *ducks*

HootyHoo reacted to ArizonaAdmit in Venting Thread - 2019 Applicants
I'm one of the folks who had a funding offer retracted from Arizona, so I'm happy this thread is here. It sucks, and it was a bit devastating given that it was my only outright offer, but I'll survive.
What's starting to get almost as frustrating as having my funding offer retracted is the comments from professional philosophers on the blogosphere. (I know, I just shouldn't bother reading them.) Perhaps my closeness to the situation is making me read things that aren't really there, but so  many comments have the tone of 'those naive kids just didn't read their offer letters closely, silly little idiots.' There are comments that literally say "that's just the way the world works." Is it even possible to utter that sentence without condescension?
I haven't seen many grad students saying things like "this is illegal, we should file a suit, they need to reverse the decision." I don't know of any of the actual admits affected by this saying that. From what I can tell, we've all been saying that it's unfortunate and upsetting. It seems like it's a violation of the April 15 resolution, to which Arizona has committed - albeit one that's more understandable given that we're in the middle of a pandemic with huge economic implications. We've perhaps suggested that alternative cost-cutting measures should have been enacted, given the April 15 resolution (though I fully admit to not know the details of Arizona's budget, maybe this really was the only or the all-things-considered best option).
Yet all the comments from professional philosophers, with doctorates and tenure-track or tenured positions, are basically "bUt It'S nOt IlLeGaL.' Yes, we are aware.
Have you ever TA'd an ethics class and had an undergraduate respond to the claim 'X is wrong' or 'A shouldn't have done X' with 'but X isn't illegal'? I feel like I spend so much time explaining to undergraduates that, while they may be correct, they're missing the point at issue. I feel like I need to be doing the same thing with professional philosophers in blog comments right now.
I'm also tired of seeing comments suggesting that I should have seen this coming. The university did commit to the April 15 resolution. That absolutely gives me reason to expect that I'll have my offer until April 15, and it is completely irrelevant whether it's legal or not for them to rescind it. It doesn't follow from it not being illegal that I should have seen it coming. I want to comment and remind these philosophers that it takes them months, perhaps years, and several drafts to get their arguments in publishable shape - perhaps they should consider that before they post the first thoughts that come to their mind.
My frustration is probably causing me to be uncharitable. But I figure a venting thread is the place to be uncharitable to people in a position of relative power.
    TL;DR:
Graduate students: University of Arizona violated the Council of Graduate Schools' April 15 Resolution, to which the university had committed. That's not good.
Professional philosophers, with doctorates and tenure-track or tenured jobs, in every single blog comment:

Sure - my AOS is in ancient.
I should note, though, that I was also rejected from 15 other programs, most of which were analytic in the way Michigan is. So I wouldn't characterize it by saying that I applied to a standard continental slate plus this one analytic program.
My specific project is one that could potentially be done in either sort of department. But I'm coming from a continental undergrad, so I knew I'd fare better applying to continental leaning or friendly departments, which is why I applied so widely. Basically I applied based on what the ancient faculty are working on, rather than based on whether the program as a whole is analytic or continental. Michigan was the best fit by far, certainly out of where I was accepted and possibly out of the programs I applied to more generally.

Honestly, I think you can narrow down your list quite a bit. If you go to any of the solid MA programs - Tufts, NIU, UWM, Brandeis, GSU (in roughly that order?) - you will have a solid shot, provided you perform well, at PGR top 10-20 programs. So, if I were you, I would probably just apply to the terminal MAs and maybe a couple of good but realistic PhD programs, and drop all of the lower-tier ones (BGSU, Washington, ASU, SIU, Kent State, etc.). (Not that those are necessarily bad programs.)
This should definitely not be the case at any of the terminal MAs you're considering, especially not with a good sample and compelling personal statement.
Your wide reading will definitely help you, but I wouldn't, like, attach your reading list to your application or anything. My advice would be to cite the relevant stuff in your sample, and say something modest but informative in your statement about your independent pursuit of philosophy.
I hope this is helpful - please keep in mind that, while I am in a good terminal MA program and thus have some insight into the process (what kinds of people get here, what my profs say, etc.), I have never been on an admissions committee. Good luck!!

HootyHoo reacted to DRMF in how to turn down an offer
Well technically the only thing you need to do is log in to your admissions portal, find the question "are you attending" and click "no". That form may also ask you which school you ended up choosing and why etc.
Now typically you would also email the program director, as well as other faculty / admin people who you've been in contact with, to let them know that you've decided to go somewhere else. It doesn't have to be long, just say you are grateful for their offer, but after serious considerations you've found school X to be the best fit for your graduate career. If it applies, say that you'll keep them in mind when thinking of a postdoc (or any sort of next stop in your academic career).

Hi all! I got mostly waitlists last year, I can say this. On April 15th I received 3 offers (one of which I accepted). On April 16th I received another offer, still. So in reply to the first question, some people hear movement very early, but some of us do not hear anything until the day of.

I am presuming that there will be some significant waitlist movement and news announced this week. Given my place of the waitlist of one of my favorite programs, my stomach has been in a pretty thick knot recently. The last few rejections in late March mostly washed over me as I became acclimatized to bad news, but I fear I will be really quite saddened if I don’t make it off the list. Although I am fairly happy with my one acceptance, I had hoped that I would have much broader options by the end of the cycle. It’s hard not to take things entirely personally.
