Check your state’s ASHA branch! I know WSHA (Wisconsin) offers a few scholarships to students at Wisconsin schools.

I deferred last year, but I ended up applying to a few other programs and will be attending somewhere else. It really depends on the school! I would suggest talking to the coordinator for your program and explaining your situation. Good luck and congrats!!

Hi! I interviewed recently. I don't want to give specific questions away, but they asked me one clinically-focused question, and two questions about community and social issues. They also asked if I had any questions about the program. Good luck!!

You don't have to double major but you should do the CSD degree if you can since you would need to do a post-bacc to cover the prerequisites needed for the grad programs you apply for. You could major in anything you want as long as you eventually take the prerequisites since some programs won't consider you and others will still admit you but require that you take them before the start of the program. I'm not sure if it'll be difficult getting into a program as long as you have a good GPA and GRE. But you don't need to double major at all I just did it because I like psychology.

i will disagree with you and say that there are many reasons why this program jumped in rankings from 130 to 92 in less than two years. Chapman offered me so many opportunities to get a wide range of experience to the best of their abilities. They took care of me at my lowest of lows and celebrated my success. The biggest impact on your education that isn't just affecting you at the moment is Covid. You have to figure out how to adjust your lifestyle to best fit how you learn and get your education during these difficult times. Maybe you lack ability to advocate for yourself and seek classmates or professors that you connect with for support? You're not a kid and dont need to be babied. Graduate programs are still trying to figure out how to best serve their students and I am sorry you got the short end of the stick during these difficult times, but instead of coming on here and shaming this graduate program. Figure out how to get the most of your education during challenging times that we are currently in. and sprinkle a little bit of empathy and perspective while you're at it.

CHAPMAN's CSD program is such a great program and I would highly recommend it to people.

heyheyhey42 got a reaction from Phoenix88 in I'm having doubts...
Some of you may have seen my previous posts trying to decide between Northwestern and UW-Milwaukee, which out of the 10 schools I applied to, were the only ones that accepted me. Neither were my top choice. I would've preferred Northwestern, but I really didn't want to be over $100,000 in debt. So I committed to UWM, but kept my name on a couple waitlists. I based my decision solely on finances. Now, I almost feel like I regret my decision. I know that it's the best decision in the long run. I know that UWM still has a good program that will get me to my goal of being an SLP.
I'm just not convinced UWM is the place for me. I've been told before that grad school is what you make of it, and it's a lot different from undergrad, so "fit" doesn't matter as much. I've also been told to just move somewhere after grad school if Milwaukee isn't for me. I'm someone who is very easily affected by my environment. I've visited UWM a couple times and while the campus was nice enough, I'm not sure I'll feel comfortable on campus. My mental health took a big hit my first semester of college because I wasn't comfortable with where I was (a similar situation where I had to prioritize finances over comfort). I really don't want that to happen again. I've cried quite a few times out of pure frustration about this.
I keep thinking about what I could've done differently. Should I have taken the GRE again? Retaken the class I failed freshman year because of my mental health (not a CSD course)? Should I have volunteered at the clinic more? Tried to find a job related to the field? Applied to more schools? I keep running through scenarios in my head. I feel like I've made a mistake and I'm going to regret something I did or didn't do. Did any of you currently in SLP grad school feel this way? Is it worth it to withdraw, take a gap year to improve my application, and apply to schools again? I just feel so defeated.

Hi! I'm finishing up my bachelor's in CSD at UW-Madison right now, and I took Psych 210 to fulfill my stats requirement. QR-A is something you can test out of if you took placement tests, or you can use the Course Search and Enroll function to find QR-A courses. You can also run a DARS if you're a degree-seeking student, it should tell you if you've satisfied the requirement or not!

Hey, sorry, someone else responded to a thread I made about ASU and said they emailed the coordinator! She said they're still working on applications and we'd hear back by the end of the month (which is frustrating, because I'd like to be able to make a decision). I would probably just express my continued interest in the program and say that I'm eager to hear back.

I can't speak to most of what you've mentioned but i'm personally in bigger cohort (50 people) and don't find it to be a problem at all. I think it's helpful to have a wider network of other grad students to work with and get to know. You'll just have to make sure you're putting yourself out there and connecting with faculty, connections go a long way in speech. Congratulations!

heyheyhey42 reacted to SLPfall2020 in Do you have a game plan for paying off your loans (especially if you're at an expensive school)?
I am in the same boat. I also was accepted to Northwestern and would go there in a heartbeat if tuition wasn't so ridiculous. I've reached out to several SLPs who've attended other cheaper but still top-ranked schools (IU, Wisconsin-Madison, etc.) to hear what they have to say. One of them actually works at a hospital and her job is to hire recently graduated SLP students for their CF. She said that she would never hire someone just because they went to Northwestern over someone who went to another reputable program that's ranked a little lower. She also said that she knows several people who attended Northwestern and are now regretting it because they have such a ridiculous amount of debt to pay off. I've also heard people say that Northwestern has a bit colder/more intense of a feel than some other programs, and that it is very rigorous and much more fast-paced because of the quarter system. It's always good to take everything with a grain of salt though - I personally think Northwestern's program seems absolutely amazing! Talking to all these people in the field made me feel so much better about possibly choosing another cheaper program over Northwestern. I will likely decline my offer unless I were to by some chance receive a scholarship, and I feel like that's the best choice for me.
That being being said, paying off debt is of course possible and lots of people do it. If you are sure that going to Northwestern and getting to experience Chicago would definitely make you that much happier than attending another school, then maybe it's worth it for you! You just have to weigh how much that all matters to you I guess. I just don't think it's a good idea for people to go into that much debt just because they think they will automatically get a better job from attending a program with such a good name. From everyone I've talked to, that's simply not true. Remember that at the end of the day it's really what you make of it and you will be so successful regardless of which program you choose!
Regardless of where I go, I'm planning on babysitting on the weekends or finding some other part-time work on the side to off-set at least some of the costs. Also I second what was said above -- federal loans from the gov are a must!!

Hi so I’m actually a current AuD student so I thought I could shed a bit of light onto paying loans off and figuring out maybe how expensive could be too expensive/crippling debt.
The first thing to consider I think is your undergrad debt. When thinking of paying off loans you NEED to consider how much you have taken out in undergrad loans. I personally, risked it for cost for my AuD program and I have lucked out with not taking out too much. But I also have undergrad debt. I have heard a rule of thumb is don’t take out more than your starting salary.
My significant other currently makes a tad less then the average starting salary for an AuD or SLP and he pays $1000/month in loans (by choice) and we are still able to go out to dinner/do things for fun. So I think the real question with loans is what is your lifestyle like? Can you live like a grad student years after you’ve graduated to pay off those loans.
I too hope for PSLF or total student loans repayment BUT I also took out loans in an amount that will be manageable to pay back in 5-10 years just in case those programs disappear or don’t pass.

Make sure that you have federal loans from the government and not just private loans (Sallie Mae). Private loans cannot be forgiven and typically don't have the option for income based repayment.
If you have private loans like me, I'd suggest refinancing with a low interest rate and then paying the highest monthly payment you can afford once you graduate grad school.

My plan is to choose the income-based repayment plan, pray that Public Service Loan Forgiveness isn't abolished like Trump and Betsy DeVos want, and get jobs in schools so that hopefully the remainder of the debt can be forgiven in 10 years! Or that someone truly enlightened will become president and forgive student loan debt. I can dream, right? Seriously, everyone, YOUR VOTE MATTERS!

To my knowledge, all faculty/staff are still working. At my university, while the Spring Break has been extended, faculty and staff are still working and on campus. Unless they specifically send an email out saying to expect delays, I think it won't be affected.

Hey, I can’t speak for the “quality” of the program, but I’m from Milwaukee and applied to Marquette. I went on a tour a few months ago, and the program seemed really nice! The graduate coordinator seemed committed to making sure each student had a plan that worked for them, and the on-campus clinic seemed really nice! If I’m accepted, I will definitely consider attending. I think “better” really depends on what you’re looking for. What schools have placements you’re interested in? What research is being done that you’re drawn to? Rankings don’t mean much, as long as the program is ASHA certified. Good luck!

Hey everybody! I just got accepted to Northwestern today for their SLL program, and I was wondering if there are others considering attending! It was my top choice for undergrad, but I wasn't accepted (which is okay!). The cost is my main issue right now. Are there any current students on here who would be willing to talk about how they're financing their education? Or any aspects of the program they wish they'd known about before attending? Thanks and good luck to everyone!
