@Madrugada any updates for you from Pitt this week? Still radio silence for me. Pitt is technically still on spring break this week and all of the in-person classes for the whole university have been halted for the rest of the semester because of Coronavirus precautions, so I'm not too surprised I haven't heard anything this week but I was just curious.

Same, hoping for good news for both of us soon, since campus visits are looking unlikely this year!

Same here, waiting on Pitt and haven't heard anything yet.

Right, between the solitary February acceptance and today’s rejection I have no idea what to expect.

  3. The lonely Pitt rejection seems anomalous, anyone have any insight? 3 weeks ago the DGS told me that decisions were expected to be sent out within 2-3 weeks but I haven’t heard anything since.

Anyone else have schools they've been accepted in cancel their campus visits? Michigan just emailed me saying they are cancelling the entire weekend (was supposed to start this Thursday). Doesn't sound like they are rescheduling but doing some teleconference stuff. I understand why they are doing it but I am quite disappointed.

Same with UF, I had already purchased my plane ticket. Classes have not been cancelled yet, would it be bad form to contact my POIs and see if they’re amenable to meeting if I come anyway?

    For anyone applying to Pitt:

Decisions should be out sometime next week. Info I got was that committee is meeting this week, and then decisions will go to grad dean and be sent out, which means next week.

Also, Pitt saw something a 50% increase in apps this year. So if you are rejected or waitlisted, know it may have just been the class of apps they received.

Lastly, no Rediker does not really take students anymore.

I’m a current Pitt grad student, so if anyone has questions, I’m happy to answer to the best of my ability

I didn’t consider Rediker as a potential POI at Pitt for this reason as well as only marginal subject overlap between our fields, but Rediker’s work on pirates, specifically his “Under the Banner of King Death” and “History  from Below the Waterline” articles were what originally inspired me to seriously pursue history as a career.

If anyone is looking for something to read to pass some time between refreshing your inbox I highly recommend them.

I just spoke to one of my POIs at NYU, and he told me that they're planning to take in a cohort of nine new students this year for the history department (down from their usual ten because they had a higher yield than expected last year). Apparently, four offers have already been sent to modern Europeanists, including me, and there may still be a fifth going out sometime soon. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the other fields, but I hope that people find this information useful!

Thanks for sharing that, congrats on NYU.

For those who have been accepted, was there a particular song you played to celebrate? I'm interested in creating a happy playlist. In the same vein, for those who have received rejections, was there a song you immediately started playing/hearing in your head? For me it was Rainbow Connection, mainly to give myself some hope and because you can make it sound really sad in your head lol.

7 rejections and 0 acceptances last cycle created this playlist

This round is off to a considerably better start for me. Hang in there.
