After a ridiculously wonderful visit at Yale, I've decided not to visit Michigan and Cornell and have officially accepted Yale's offer. SUCH PEACE!

The news cycle is designed to induce, then monetize, feelings of anxiety. Your fears about the coronavirus are likely at least partially a result of your being emotionally manipulated for profit. If you're not traveling to China or Iran, the chances of your contracting the disease are extremely small. (The coronavirus has already reached my university, and nobody seems to care.)
Even if you were to contract the coronavirus, there is an 81% chance that you would experience mild symptoms and then recover. The virus almost certainly won't kill you unless you're 80 years old or older, which I assume is not the case. If you are young and relatively healthy, and you have access to sufficient hydration, medical care, etc., you would likely be fine even if you contracted the disease. The virus hasn't killed anyone in the U.S., and there is likely no reason to believe that you would be the first. If you're worried, you should take care to wash your hands with soap and hot water reasonably frequently.
Right now, the coronavirus does not pose a serious threat to your health and long-term well-being. I imagine that the anxiety you're feeling about the coronavirus might have multiple causes. I hope you're able to address every possible cause of anxiety: are you well-rested? Are you eating enough? Is stress from school or work contributing to these feelings? If you have a prescription for anxiety-managing medication, are you taking it?
You're lucky to have the opportunity to go on these visits, and I hope that worries about this disease, which are probably not justified, don't ruin your ability to have a good time and to make an informed choice about graduate school. In three or four years, you'll almost certainly have forgotten about the coronavirus, but you'll still be in whichever program you choose.

I think I'm going to write back to the DGS at the school where I'm waitlisted and ask how (if at all) visits are normally handled for waitlisted students. I don't see how it can hurt in any situation as long as you aren't pushy/demanding!

What are people's thoughts on visiting places that have waitlisted you? I'm on four waitlists with no acceptances, and I just heard back from the final program I was waiting for. So, I now have to decide if it's worth the money to pay my way to visit any of these places so that I could make an informed decision if an offer comes my way later in March/April.

I'm only on waitlists, too, and I have an MA from a program ranked in the 40s. I'm really sorry for the hurt you're feeling after your advisor's comment. The reality is that they have a job in your dream field, and it doesn't REALLY hurt them if you don't get in after they write a letter, so it's too bad that they made that comment. I let my advisor know about my situation, and they replied that it's such a hard time and programs are accepting fewer and fewer people, etc. I hope you can get some encouragement like that too, because you have worked SO HARD. The reality of all this is that rejections are very rarely about you--it's such a luck thing. Fingers crossed for Fordham or a an acceptance off a waitlist for you (or both!)!!

I feel everyone on the struggle to figure out what you did wrong when you've worked so hard and people you respect gave you feedback. To me, the worst feeling is the world is not knowing how to get better.  Don't forget the lottery element and factors out of your control, like school prestige, connections of your LORs, whether you're non-traditional, etc.; give your SoP and writing sample another clear, critical, ruthless look and get more feedback; and if you can-- just get back in the ring to try your chances again. You're going to need persistence in this game no matter what you do.
I feel lucky at this point that I am going to pull through, but I applied to sixteen schools. If I'd applied to the nine that rejected me - a very respectable number - my only options would be a nonfunded MA at Boulder and I'd be in the shutout category.

    Part II:
A: Go to (k). I went to (y) but the three most brilliant minds working in literary studies right now are at (k). You would be an idiot not to go there, but I have a feeling you won't, because you'll be an idiot about it.
Me: Well I've heard that all of the graduate students at (k) are miserable—a lot of current and recent ones have reached out to me with not so great things.
A: What is "happiness" anyway? Why would anyone do a PhD thinking they're going to be happy during it?
Me: Okay that's a point. Were you happy at (y)?
    A: Well, yes.
Me: I feel like I could be really happy at (x) but they apparently haven't placed a TT job in 3 or 4 years now.
B: There are no jobs. You will not get a job. Just go where you want to read and write for 6 years and expect to leave the profession after.
Me: But you have a job.
B: Do not pay attention to that. No one gets jobs.
Me: This is a Beckett play and I want out.

Just an update on this: I have been emailing/having coffees with all of the mentors of mine who're in the know about the state of the programs I applied to at the moment and they are ... all giving me completely contradictory advice lol! Also most of them know each other and it's gotten to the point where some are fighting behind the scenes about their advice to me. (I'm sure this will all be fine in the end, no one is totally right and no one is totally wrong, but just picture me, a person who always tries to please her teachers, good teacher's pet, sitting in a chair, trying to process all of this.)
A: Don't go to (x). There's no one for you to work with there.
    B: Well, A doesn't know what she's talking about. Go to (x).
C : Wait, actually I think (y) could be a perfect fit for you. Don't go to (z).
D : I've been talking to C and we both think you should go to (y). Go where you have multiple people you want to work with who have clout.
E: I know you like (y) a lot but eh ... I'm not crazy about [POI].
    D : I've changed my mind; go to (k).
F (teacher of B ) : (x) is boring. (y) is also boring. Don't go to (x) or (y) under any circumstances. Also don't choose for advisors; all that can change. Go where you like the intellectual community best. More soon, bye.
B : Remember there are no jobs so don't expect that you'll get one. Kiss kiss!

Woohoo double waitlist club (UNC Chapel Hill & UVA)! Since six straight rejections preceded these (uh... ow) I am trying to remain reasonable and not too optimistic lol. Does it count as a shutout if you die of old age on a waitlist? Anyway, congratulations to everyone (including people with rejections: it's a roll of the fricking dice on so many levels). I was comforted somewhat by a professor who told me the other day that he's "made a career by getting rejected from Brown every step of the way."

@meghan_sparkle about to come out here like Jesus with the fishes and loaves in a couple of weeks for all the 20th-century people on the big boy waitlists
