  1. just chaired a session with Robert Minor at the APA Pacific. Pleasant man! Congratulations!
  2. Ask about funding, TAships, opportunities for coursework at other schools, residency requirements (related to funding/tuition), etc.
  3. I guess I should've known how this would turn out when I referred to graduate school as "the pursuit of my Mistress Sophia" in my Statement of Purpose.
  4. How do you aggressively pursue a place where you have been waitlisted? I was waitlisted at UCR and rejected (or presumably rejected) from everywhere else.
  5. (1) Columbia is a very expensive school and (2) Columbia is, without a doubt, one of the best PhD programs in the world. You're competing for attention with doctoral students. Columbia doesn't often (ever?) accept students from the vast majority of highly-regarded terminal M.A. programs. You'll spend far more to get an M.A. from Columbia than you would at any of the highly regarded terminal M.A. programs - even if you weren't funded at them at all! And you'd get far more attention at those programs as well. What incentive does a faculty member at Columbia have to help you place well, mentor you, etc.? I'm not saying those faculty members are bad people, but that they have a whole crew of doctoral students already! A PhD is often a form of financial suicide to begin with!
  6. The general rule of thumb is that you do not accept.
  7. Oh, and maybe also look towards people who are interested in philosophy of cognitive science specifically. So far as I can tell, a lot of the interesting confrontations between Husserlian phenomenology n such and analytic philosophy of science is found there.
  8. Check out the California Phenomenology Circle. Might be able to get some pointers that way.
  9. I'm pretty sure I'm shut out this round unless UCR pulls through. I've got a couple ideas as to why. I suppose I'm okay with it if that's the case.
  10. I might be able to help you with a bit more information on hand. For what it's worth, my interests are (probably) similar.
  11. I assume that I won't get into CUNY or Columbia, but I don't mind a pleasant surprise. Waitlisted at UCR, which is definitely a top choice for me. I think I'd do very well there.
  12. angrily reading Adorno and realizing that all these adcomms are fascist.
  13. Honestly, I'd love to get them all at once. Rip the bandaid off
  14. rejected from Fordham. Accepted: Waitlisted: Rejected: Fordham, UC Berkeley, SUNY Stony Brook, Northwestern, Emory, Oregon, Boston U, Loyola Chicago, DePaul Pending: UC Riverside, Villanova, Georgetown, Duquesne, CUNY, Columbia, Kentucky, McGill, New Mexico. They all probably found my writing sample intimidating and that's why they won't let me in. They're afraid of my intellectual might and intestinal fortitude.
  15. I mean, given what applicants are hearing about numbers this season, I'd imagine many are feeling are desperate and - given that fact - a department would be acting rather dickish if they were to look down on an applicant for emailing them. The sheer amount of general anxiety among people under 40 right now is immense, and I'd imagine throwing this application season on top of that is quite a lot (even if PhD applicants are, of course, definitely no where near the most unfortunate of their peers)
  16. Yeah, but if I expect the worst I can only be pleasantly surprised. Do not take that from me.
  17. Well, given that UC Riverside, Villanova, Georgetown, Fordham, Duquesne, and DePaul have all sent something out, I'm assuming I'm likely rejected from those. Guess I'm forced to choose a more viable and lucrative career path.
  18. I saw a funny tweet this morning, and I was about to give it a like. However, I quickly realized that the author of the tweet is a member of a department where I was recently rejected. So, of course, I declined to like the tweet.
  19. 0a / 0w / 6r / 13p. Boston seemed like a really good fit, too. At least I feel like I got a good backup career plan now, which I did not have before I started my M.A. But, man, it's been rough in general and these rejections really hit harder than I'd expected! However, I think I got really good advice from everyone I asked, etc. I also applied pretty widely, because my interests are pretty wide-ranging: I picked my M.A. program largely due to its strengths in philosophy of science, cogsci, and philosophy of mind, but my "roots" are in 19th Century German philosophy, critical theory, phenomenology, etc. The upshot of this is that I work pretty well with just about anyone and enjoy helping other students a lot, and my writing does not feature the glaring omissions you often in see in a lot of 20th century philosophy of any tradition/school (or, at least, I try pretty hard for it not to do so). I hope that came off in what I submitted to one of these programs! pending: UC Riverside, Georgetown, Kentucky, Columbia, Duquesne, CUNY, Villanova, Fordham, McGill, New Mexico*, DePaul, Vanderbilt.
  20. not unusual. I haven't heard back from most of the programs I applied to yet, and some of them do not appear to have sent out any notices at all.
  21. If anyone needs encouragement, it took Andrew Bollhagen more than one try to get into UCSD.
  22. So far, no acceptances or waitlist notifications. Four rejections. On the one hand, a lot of time and effort and money may have all gone down the drain. On other hand, admissions committees are inadvertently preventing me from committing financial suicide.
  23. Conan : What gods do you pray to? Subotai : I pray to the four winds... and you? Conan : To Crom... but I seldom pray to him, he doesn't listen. Subotai : [chuckles] What good is he then? Ah, it's just as I've always said. Conan : He is strong! If I apply to a PhD program, I have to go before him, and he will ask me, "What is his contribution to our cohort?" If I don't know it, he will cast me out of consideration for admissions and laugh at me. That's Crom, strong on his admissions committee. Subotai : Ah, my god is greater. Conan : [chuckles] Crom laughs at your four winds. He laughs from his tenure-track position.
