    Crowdsourcing opinions here -

How likely is it that a school will let me defer my PhD acceptance? And if it were you, how would you go about that conversation (email first to POI, request a call with program director, etc.)? I currently have 1 acceptance and it's from a school that has you secure your own GA after admission (thinking this might be a plus since they haven't already slotted me into a position).

As brief background, my partner and I are expecting and I am due in November. We've considered all the options and have decided that giving birth in the middle of the first semester isn't the start I'd like to have and financially, it doesn't make sense to lose out on my generous maternity leave. Any advice would be helpful if you or someone you know has been through this process of deferring!

Congratulations on your (future) little one! I agree with ASA, it depends on the program. My friend (Epi) did that successfully last year and their funding was successfully deferred a year too. But not all programs will do this, they may say to re apply again. Good luck!!

I wrote the program director with an one-sentence email, a few hours later the decision was rendered on the portal. (I'm not sure if it's because of my email pushing or they're gonna do it anyways.) Applicants do it all the time so no need to overthinking it :)

Thank you so much xxxxphd!! Great advice and perspective - I have overthought every single step of the application process Lolol ? I will send it tomorrow!!

Hi everyone! Has anybody heard anything from Arizona’s Health Behavior Health Promotion program or UCSD/SDSU’s Health Behavior program?

Hey! I just interviewed with U Arizona last week. I (think) I remember reading on their website that they don’t do interviews so it’s not clear if they interview everyone. I’ll let you if I hear anything! Have you heard from them in the meantime?

Hi! Have you heard anything from UCSD SDSU? I applied for the Epi program.

No I haven’t heard anything since application complete email. Hopefully we hear soon, good luck to us both!

Same for HB track but I imagine very soon since the April 15 standard decision date is approaching soon - good luck!!!!

Odd. How are you interpreting this lag? Seems to me that others have heard back weeks ago. And I’ve seen that Epi folks have heard back (via the search function). Are you thinking waitlist?

I actually have no idea - usually I look back to see prior year timelines, but with COVID I figure this year will not necessarily follow prior year timelines

    Thanks so much ❤️

LOL JHU is still in my top choices! But yes, you are right! The universe works in mysterious ways. Literally called my dad this morning and cried. I've gotten so many rejections in the past 3 years, but kept pushing and continued to believe in myself and improve myself.

DREAMS COME TRUE. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!

Now I'm tearing up too, LOL! Congratulations!!!!

Is anyone reaching out to programs they got rejected from to ask for feedback from reviewers? Not planning on doing this unless I don't get in anywhere this cycle, but just curious to hear others' thoughts :)

Maybe you could ask your LOR writers as well, I am sure they will provide helpful guidance. I hope that it does not come to that though, and you get in where you want to ?

Definitely, don't delay having kids, if you feel ready! There's this quote that I LOVE from Henry Rollins that I think is so applicable:

"No such thing as spare time

No such thing as free time

No such thing as down time

    All you got is lifetime

    Go"

As someone who was notorious for "When I do X, then I can focus on Y," this quote has always resonated. So definitely don't put off life for grad school because there's no such thing. You're living.

Wow this is super inspiring and I’m definitely saving it!

Arizona is not showing me any love and I live here! ?‍♀️

Anyone out there apply to the University of Arizona (Health Behavior Health Promotion)? It’s been radio silent, and I don’t have a good sense of if they interview or not. I wonder if there has been any movement (like I’m willing to count a status change from submitted to under review as a W at this point. ?).

Hey there - I did too! ? No word on my end, so you’re not alone! I am pretty sure they do not do interviews, and I know it’s still early in the process. We can keep in touch over dm if you’d like.

    Salam fellow applicants,

I have been viewing this message board for some time now, and have two questions for the general community:

    (1) Has absolutely nobody applied to state schools, or is it a matter of only claiming JHU/Harvard/Yale to show off to the other anonymous posters? Posting your “stats” on page 5 didn’t get you enough of a dopamine rush?

    (2) What’s with the “we’re in this together” and “good luck” posts? We’re absolutely not, and we’re competing against each other for limited spaces, respectively. I mean, unless it’s a southern-sweet show of force, then that’s sensible. This isn’t tennis.

    Alright, have a nice day.

This post makes me sad, it sounds like you are in a bad place right now. But instead of trying to bring others down, perhaps the community can help lift you up? How can we support you?

We are all going to end up where we are meant to. More importantly, regardless of where we end up, we all are going to be colleagues. Why not help each other along the way?

    Hi all!
Decided to stop lurking and contribute. ? I applied to PhD at the following:

    UCSD-SDSU epidemiology - silence

    UC Berkeley epidemiology - silence

UCDavis public health sciences - silence

    UCSF epidemiology - silence

Stanford epidemiology and translational sciences - silence

    Brown epidemiology - rejected 12/4

    UCLA epidemiology - silence

University of Washington Public health genetics - silence

    UMD epidemiology - silence

George Washington University Global Public health science - silence

anyone with any info on these will help drop my blood pressure from very high to high. ?

I haven’t heard anything from UCSD-SDSU (Health Behavior) either.

I reviewed my SOP for the school to see what they had access too, and then did more research on the program (i.e. research centers, course requirements, etc.) and my interviewers specifically (their interests/current research, classes they taught, and read a few recent papers they'd written). Might have been a little too much, but I just wanted to be ready to talk about them if needed.

Other than that, I tried to prepare for some questions I thought they might ask: tell me about yourself/your interests, why this program, why are you interested in a phd right now as opposed to in a few years, where do i see myself post-phd. Also brainstormed some questions to ask them, I thought the research on the program was really helpful here because I was able to avoid asking questions that are on the websites.

Really good advice here. Pretty much everyone will say tell me about yourself so that’s a freebie question where you can have a response that highlights your most important points.

another poster a few weeks ago said “How will the field be a better place with you in it?” Although I was not asked this exact question I was asked a variation of it - if you can answer this question, and be able to outline a plan to get there and your goals along the way, you’ll be in good shape re “your story.” Then you want to connect that to “why <program>“.

I know it’s scary but you can do it!! Mine were much more laid back than I expected.

Female, here. Wore a blazer, button-up, and my lucky fuzzy socks. Did not feel overly dressed. Interviewers were very casual though.

Something that I think may be important too is making sure your background is professional and visually appealing. Room rater is a good source for tips on camera angles, lighting, etc.

I wore fuzzy socks too!! I’m female, wore suit jacket. I have been wearing what I would wear if I were interviewing in person (except for the fuzzy socks lol).

Anyone know if Hopkins depts/tracks send out the decisions on the same day every year? Getting anxious because last year they sent out invites on this day (for my track). I know I should just chill out and be patient...

I’m not familiar w Hopkins timeline but I know a lot of schools are sending decisions a bit later this year due to the increased volume of apps for all programs. But even though I know things will be delayed a bit it doesn’t stop me from worrying about it still lol

I hope everyone is hanging in there, this waiting period has been brutal! Hopefully we will all hear back soon! I was accepted to UW PhD Epidemiology yesterday and am really excited! If anyone else was accepted, feel free to DM me so we can connect! Also, I am trying to navigate their funding mechanism so if anyone has any information on that, I would greatly appreciate it! Wishing everyone the best of luck during this process, it seems this is one of the most competitive years so the stress level has been very high on my end for sure

    Congratulations that’s an incredible program!!

Keep your head up. I applied last year to two schools and got rejected. I've been working in research for the time being, and racked up some more experience. This year, I have applied to 10 schools, and received 4 interview invites so far. The road gets better, and YOU get better. Your intentions to pursue doctoral studies becomes stronger (which will show in your future interviews). You'll look back and be like: wow, I really found value in using that extra year to work. It is a learning experience, so interpret it that way!

What a great perspective and attitude!! Thank you for sharing this valuable insight!!
