I'm struggling with this too, and I have fewer choices than you haha. From everything I hear from others/scouring the internet, it really comes down to what's important to you. Wherever you choose will determine a lot of things about your life for the next 4-5 years. That means location (climate, city), people (faculty, students), stress level (how supportive is the program, how good is the funding, is the environment collaborative or competitive), and probably lots of other things. I found this one article recommending a weighted grading rubric to help decide, which might at least be helpful in terms of organizing your thoughts: https://www.themuse.com/advice/the-simple-tool-that-will-help-you-pick-the-right-grad-school
A big thing that I hear from people who have gone through a PhD is that advisor match is REALLY important. You want to have an advisor who you mesh with, in terms of communication and mentorship style as well as research interests. Communication and mentorship style might even be more important, because that will determine how you work together day-to-day. If you can, try to talk to current students who work with your advisor match - they can tell you what working with this person is like. I also think it's fair to ask your advisor how they like to work with students (cadence of check-in meetings, hands-on vs. hands-off approach, etc.). Definitely try to have some face time with them if you haven't already, even if it's over zoom.
Also, I think it's important to keep top of mind WHY you are doing a PhD, and how well each program will help you meet your goals. If your goal is academia, does the program have a good track record of postdoc or faculty placements? If your goal is to work for the CDC, is the program supportive of going into that kind of work? How important is reputation for what you want to do afterwards?
You have lots of great options so in some ways, you can't go wrong here. At this point, it's just a matter of optimizing your happiness and what you want to get out of a PhD!

Just found out yesterday evening that I've been accepted into the TAMU School of Public Health for DrPH in Public Health Sciences with a concentration in Environmental Health degree program! Crossing my fingers for those that are still waiting! ?

Quick question: Is it customary (or perhaps even a best practice) to send a thank you note to the faculty on your interview panel? I’m struggling with this and would appreciate thoughts from others.

THIS is how you get someone excited about a school! It’s not even remotely a fit but I’m like “Damn! I should have made it work.” Haha.

Hey - congrats on Davis!!! I feel you though. I lived in Davis for a year and actually RAed for an infectious diseases PhD student there. I still keep in touch with her loosely and she's currently working at the CDC. From what I remember, she loved her program and her advisor was incredibly supportive. Sorry I don't have more info on the program, BUT I do have a lot of info on Davis.
First of all, I have to say I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DAVIS. It is a gorgeous little town. So chilled out and beautiful. Summers are HOT but you'll just have to take refuge in Tahoe (1.5 hrs away) and Yosemite (3 hrs away). I've had some of the most positive experiences of my life in Davis, and I was only there for a year.
My brother did his PhD at Davis in Econ. When he first applied, it wasn't his top choice either but 6 years later he is a fancy professor at a liberal arts college and has never looked back. The community he built at Davis are now some of his closest friends (and mine). Also, super fun events that happen during the year (picnic day, tour, farmer's markets). AND Davis is super duper safe.
Hope this helps a bit and let me know if you want more info!
Edit: how could I forget? Davis is the bike capital of the world. Super flat and loads of bike lanes. You should see the bike racks in UC Davis during the semester. Pretty crazy

Just got my last decision back (UCLA ID EPI)! 4/4 rejections. Time to start prepping for the next application cycle.. lol
As much as it stings, I'm allowing myself just 5 minutes to feel down. To those who are in the same boat, as much as we hate to hear it, it's a pretty random process. On paper, I would have a pretty competitive application (20 peer reviewed articles, several first author publications, 5+ years of professional experience, led some workgroups in collab. with CDC, great LORs, decent grades), but alas it all comes down to right time, right place. ?

A bit of an oddball question but: Is anyone else planning on taking on any health or personal goals from now until Fall?

I’m working on getting into shape, resting more (tough with a kid), and reading a new book a week.

I feel really lucky to have a few good options for PhD programs this year, but I don’t want to alienate future collaborations w/ professors. Does anyone have advice for turning down offers delicately? Thanks in advance.

I was accepted to CUNY's PhD program in epi. I received 2 emails, one generic and the other from my interviewer. Still waiting to hear about funding/fellowships. I'm also waiting to hear back from Columbia (PhD epi). I think I would pick CUNY over Columbia anyways, but I need all the information before I make a decision.

Hi friends. If anyone is choosing between UNC HB, BU HSR, and/or Emory BSHES (all PhD), feel free to DM me and I can try and create a group! Would be great if we could bounce our thoughts off each other and start building community with potential cohortmates.

I got into Tulane's DrPH program!!!!
I am so shocked and I am feeling so blessed! I got the news today around 4:30 and I'm still shook lol. I'm also really excited to potentially work with my advisor and be in NOLA - which is one of my favorite cities in the country.
Still waiting on 4 other schools: GW, Hopkins, BUSPH (interviewed), and Rutgers. Honestly, I'm just grateful to have gotten in somewhere. Every other decision will just be icing on the cake. Praying for options, but pretty happy with this one if it ends up being my only acceptance!

I love this thread too! My dream is....many dreams. To do an MPH and work in women's sexual +mental health - specifically with abortion care. To research and write columns on womens health and health policy, to teach maybe in the long-term.

I was fortunate enough to be admitted earlier this week to PhD programs in Health Policy at Stanford and Harvard, the decision science track for both schools.
I went into this process with a research question in mind, and during my interviews I was asked (read: grilled) about my topic and why it was appropriate for decision science and not economics, for example. I think that being purposeful, specific (I applied to three schools), and demonstrating that I was reading and thinking about the discipline outside of my day job in population health was a boon to my application. In several interviews I talked about how things I had recently read had shaped my thinking, even when the books weren't specific to health policy ("Thinking, Fast and Slow", "Mountains Beyond Mountains", random articles I had read).
I did reach out to professors before submitting and followed up when they recommended other faculty to talk to. When it came to the statement, I tried to answer three questions: "Why this?," "Why now?," "Why me?" I wanted the committee to want to meet me, not necessarily by having an intriguing background but by posing interesting questions. Naturally many of my interviews challenged me about the questions I posed in my statement. In hindsight, I don't think they expected me to have the right answers (that's what the PhD is for!) but to demonstrate my willingness to wrestle with them and engage intellectually.
Let me know if you have any questions. I'm very excited to think about healthcare fulltime, free from my corporate obligations! ?
