Does anyone know how much funding Australian universities give to international students? I'm looking into PhD Education programs at ANU, Melbourne, Sydney, and Monash... Tuition is really expensive and I'm not sure what the likelihood of getting a scholarship or funding would be as a international student.

A current student at the programme I start in Fall has been in contact with all us incoming students. Explaining how things work, answering our questions, all very helpful. He also got us each to do a little blurb about ourselves, which he compiled and sent back so we could know a bit about our classmates.

It turns out everyone is much more impressive and accomplished than I am. I'm not being self-deprecating - it's extroadinary what some of these people have done.

I've heard of imposter syndrome, but I never imagiend it setting in before school even started. How is everyone else feeling as fall gets closer?

ridgey got a reaction from gezzloume in If you get in next year, how old will you be when you start your PhD?
I'll be 28. It has been six years since undergrad. I've worked in that time, but I keep doing more study. Post-grad diplomas, masters, etc. My friends from uni have pretty established grown-up lives, but I keep interrupting mine. I've come to terms with the fact that this path means no real financial security until my mid-thirties.

Is it really necessary to leave bitter and childish remarks on the results page when you find out you've been rejected?

I seriously want to know why people do this. Are these people who believe they are such hot shots that they deserve admission to every top program? You're going to get rejects, so deal with it like an adult,

OK, I'm not going to name any names here, but I must say that some of the comments I'm reading on this board are starting to make me think that there is credence to the stereotype that academia can be a very stuffy and elitist profession. My main focus as a soon-to-be graduate student is gaining the opportunity to get solid training that will allow me to be a good professor who students enjoy learning from. Of course I hope to have the opportunity in my career as a professor to conduct research and publish papers- who wouldn't? But at the same time, if I end up working at a terminal MA or (gasp!) BA program, I'd be far from disappointed. What I care most about isn't money (because frankly I already have plenty of that being one of those trust-fund kids) or prestige, but instead being able to make a difference in people's lives. Where I get my training of course matters, but I don't share the view that some on this board seem to harbor that if a person gets their PhD at a non-top-ten program such as UC-Davis or Florida State (see signature below) that they're going to have a miserable time finding a job or that if they don't then that's the exception, not the rule.

I have never wished those going to top-of-the-heap programs anything but congratulations. But I must say that it's really a turn-off when people start projecting this "better than" attitude to the point where it becomes dismissive of anybody who isn't joining them in the Ivy League.

Sorry if I offended anyone, maybe I was being TOO sensitive. I just originally read her post as stating that appearing to have children would be a bad thing and considering I fight the assumption of "mom = not dedicated" everyday I can be a little sensitive. Sorry ticklemepink and melusine and anyone else who thought my post was unwarranted.

I don't want to start controversy but I think you should be a little more sensitive . Some of us that are applying to grad school do have children. And I don't believe that my Facebook picture with my husband and daughter is at all giving "the wrong impression." I can't speak for other programs but the one's I'm applying to specifically state on there websites that they are family friendly. In fact I wouldn't want to be part of a program that frowned upon women with children because I can almost bet there's a double standard and they don't see it as an issue for the men to have a child. Sorry but this is a sensitive point for me.

Why are so many folks so arrogant to assume that just because they applied to a school and have not been contacted while others claim to have been contacted that it must be fake? Not all decisions are made at the same time any given year, and sometimes it takes over a month or two for some places to get through the files and generate a possible cohort size (or a bit larger) list of admits. Having said that, if there is a good reason to be suspicious then by all means go ahead. Otherwise it is a bit off-putting (and unfair imo) to those who have been accepted and choose to post the anonymous results, but choose not to post here. Just my thoughts.

The way I "know" opening letters is wrong, absent permission and especially if the "waive my rights" box is ticked, is this: if I were in that situation, planning to read the letters, my fear would be the writer finding out. If it were a legit course of action, then I wouldn't worry. The fear of getting caught indicates that the action is wrong.

I had the opportunity today to read a letter from the writer I'm most iffy about. I thought he had forgotten this school and didn't want to bug him, so lined up a replacement. Today, I found that he'd left the letter for me in my second mailslot in the department, which I don't check often. It crossed my mind to read it, but I knew that 1) I could never look him in the eye again, and 2)sometimes it's better not to know. I just sent it to the programme anyway - it'll be late but I already have the right number and it's better the programme ignore it than it sit around tempting me.

I don't want this board to get nasty between people at any personal level. Obviously there are just differences of opinion. Thank God we live in a country where that is possible. So in all sincerity, Ferrero, best of luck to you in your grad school search and don't take my disagreement with you as a personal attack.

IMO, passive voice has no place in a SOP. You are trying to convince the reader that you are confident and prepared. Using passive voice implies just the opposite. "I hope to", "I believe I will", etc... blech. That kind of writing just sounds wimpy.

Whoops! Now I look like a moron. I blame my second-rate public school education. To this day I couldn't tell you the rules of how to write well or specific grammar terms, but I'm a pretty decent writer, I swear! (thanks to reading endless amounts of books in my spare time) So perhaps I'll keep my mouth shut from now on in threads like this one.
