    Hi all,

This is my 2nd and last attempt at trying out for the PGS-D.
    Anyone applying this year?

I was rejected last year and awarded this year in a very competitive committee. Like a few of you, I struggled to understand why I didn't score higher last year (e.g. ranked bottom 1/4 for experience even though I had professional experience which  produced multiple pubs). My supervisor and friends who have NSERCs thought I had a good chance of getting an award because of how I looked on paper vs some other previous winners.
Not sure how much luck vs strategy played a role but here is as summary of changes I made between my first and second application:
-Wording. I mimicked their own language as well as writing style from previous award winners. I used their keywords throughout my personal statement. I did some digging and found this repository which I used for writing style:
     https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EszlHbIctBJZ0HbnNwP5b75YwIhPLGdpgl6KrhZkmBQ/htmlview#
Reviewed Appendix A of the Selection committee guide: https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/_doc/Students-Etudiants/SelectionCommitteeGuide_e.pdf I used this appendix to identify 'key words'.
-References. I suggested/provided my references specific examples (academic and experience) and key words to use. In an NSERC Q&A session I came across, someone mentioned that if you aren't able to fit all your examples relevant to selection criteria, give the extras to your references so they can state them for you.
-Delays/gaps. I specifically stated why I took longer than expected to graduate. For example, my undergrad was longer than 4 years because I did co-op. One piece of advice I got was that this kind of delay needs to be spelled out (even though the experience section would reflect the same info).
For those of you facing disappointment, I'm sorry you're going through this. This is not a reflection of your ability.

    196 - accepted for PGS-D

For all of those who were waitlisted or rejected, remember that your research matters! Academia is hell and there should be more funding period.

Thanks to everyone on here who posted constant updates.

Just got CGSD! I am in disbelief! This is my third year applying and I ranked really low every time... Only difference was an extra first-author paper this year (2 total on my CV). I am in Psychology. uOttawa.

". I regret to inform you that your application did not score highly enough to be funded, and you will not be offered an award." from mine last year

That's somewhat comforting! Honestly I didn't think it would be so competitive. Anyways hope you get bumped up! Good luck!

I just heard from UWaterloo. It says NSERC released results and notified them (UW) that my application was successful and "NSERC will make individual notifications available via the secure site on April 26 to all applicants. This will include instructions on how to activate your award"

Best of luck to those waiting! This was my second year applying. And don't validate yourself based on one external award  getting past the institutional level is a huge accomplishment, too!

I do think they take into consideration the year with which you are applying; first year might not expect that much output?
Also I don't think one extra year gives that much time for significant output either but thats just my opinion. Esp when most people are at the coursework / quals stage in the first year to have that much time dedicated to research.

Yes but 2nd year masters and 3rd and 4th year PhD students aren't eligible to apply. After courses and TAing, that doesn't leave a lot of time for people to get ahead in reasearch IMO.

yeah for me clawback is also 12k. so getting this would still significantly add on to my stipend.
they can hire more students with the money they dont have to spend on you ?

This is the answer I got from them: The results will be uploaded after 5 pm this evening. You will get a notification regardless of being offered or not awarded. You will receive an email with instructions on how to get access to your result.
So, relax for now, go do ur work and keep an eye on your email after 5 pm. Best of luck to you all!
