I'm interviewing there next week and honestly I'm super excited about it! Aside from just biotech, there's a lot of great science going on in the DC area, so no matter which track you apply for there's going to be opportunities with government labs, museums, and industry. Even within the department, there's some really amazing research that fits with my interests. Just in general, UMD is well known for its STEM programs and I know I'll be getting a quality education if that's where I choose to go. I'll be able to speak to this more after my recruitment event, but if you think you'd fit within the program you should definitely go for it!

There were a couple main reasons I made my decision:
    1. The research: OSU has a dedicated center for my desired area of research (RNA biology) that is well supported and will provide me extensive professional opportunities.
    2. Columbus is the best combination of low cost of living and plenty to do out of all the places I was accepted to
    3. Program specific details that made the program stand out from other ones I was considering (not having to TA, flexible curriculum, emphasis on scientific communication)
    4. Personal reasons: my partner and many of my friends live in the area. This wasn’t my deciding factor, but it was a nice bonus

I got off the waitlist at Ohio State and ended up committing there this week. It was really hard to be patient but it was worth it in the end!

Since you're applying to places with rotations (or at least the programs you're applying to that I'm familiar with), make sure all the schools you apply to have a few professors (preferably at least 3) that you could see yourself working with (I asked sooo many grad students during interviews for advice on picking a school and every single one of them said go wherever there is the highest number of labs doing work that is really interesting to you that you could see yourself doing). It doesn't hurt to reach out and ask a professor if they will be taking on new students next year. You want to go into a department that generally supports and has strengths in the type of research you want to do, and you want to have a few professors you could work with so if the prof you most want to work with can't take you (or you end up not vibing with them during the rotation) you have options. Plus, if your research interest align with the department strengths, you have a much better chance of being accepted.

Beyond that, you will want to take account into aspects such as location of schools (the city, weather, what there is to do in the city, how close you are to friends/ family, opportunities for industry if you decide to go in that direction), along with what students in the program generally do afterwards (if that info is available) to see if it aligns with your goals (also look at the career trajectories of students from labs you may want to work in)

Given the brief background you provided, I️ think that you have a good shot at those reaches and that your list does seem well balanced (you really do not need a pub to be competitive). Also, make sure every school on your final list is somewhere that you would be 100% happy to attend if you were for some reason rejected everywhere else.

Speaking as a fall 2021 applicant, it's really good that you're starting to think about this early! Here's what I did for PhD applications in molecular/cell biology and biochemistry:
Spring semester/summer before applying: Start researching schools where you might want to apply. I used GradTrek to generate a list of schools based on degree and region, then went to the program's website and made detailed notes. I noted things like funding, benefits, teaching requirements, unique research opportunities, and anything that made the program stand out to me. From this, I made a list of the schools where I would be applying and their application requirements. Summer/beginning of fall: Identify your rec writers and ASK THEM EARLY! I cannot stress this enough - professors are busy people and you need to give them enough time to write and submit. Some will ask for a CV/resume so make sure you have that in order. Start drafting your statement of purpose early as well, and give yourself time to refine it and modify it for each school. If you're applying to a program that requires you to reach out to faculty of interest, start doing that.  Fall: Start your applications as early as you're able to, especially if you're requesting fee waivers. I would recommend making a separate folder in your email for everything grad school (you'll be getting A LOT of emails). Remind your rec writers to have everything in by the deadline. Generally, just work ahead of deadlines and don't put everything off until the last minute.   Best of luck to you in your grad school journey!

queerorpheus got a reaction from Beezy in If you have already spoken to your potential advisors and had discussions about the research then is it normal to not get an interview for a PhD program?
This is a really weird cycle and even speaking with professors isn't a guarantee of interview/acceptance. I wouldn't get down on yourself too much since it is such a strange year for applying and a lot of schools have seen an increase in applicants. There's no way to know the criteria for each individual school or program, so it's hard to know where you stand and how your application might have been received. You didn't do yourself any harm in reaching out to professors for sure! I hope you get some positive news soon. Best of luck!

Thanks for the information. I think it is a great opportunity to work in government, too. It is just I am not sure whether there will be any regulation for the international people. I am one of the international candidates. I did an interview on Jan 22 with one PI. Then, I received the email with dates for the recruitment yesterday. It will be on Feb 9-10 or Feb 17-18. It is two days event from 9AM to 12PM. Hope this helps.

I’m not so sure about this. I was under the impression that most admissions committees (for PhD at least, med school is a completely different story) really only care about research experiences and academics. Science outreach/teaching always is a bonus but not necessary, and I dont think much weight is placed on participating in unrelated extracurriculars themselves. Maybe they could help illustrate how you might work as a scientist, (eg athlete-> hardworking) but I don’t think they are necessary for admissions into a top program. Just my (possibly incorrect) take ?

I dont know how much of the thread or other threads you have read, but graduate admissions are not as easy as hndergraduate predictions. Their have been people with 2.93’s getting interviews at Harvard over a 4.0 applicant. Looking at your overview, I only have one piece of advice, and dont take it in a bad way, but you are too academically-oriented (unless you left information out). Although getting into graduate school is all about how well you have performed in many sectors (Research, Classes, etc.), you also need to be well-rounded. This means taking part in clubs and activities outside of your comfort zone. While you wont be writing a paper on it to the committee, its still important!

queerorpheus got a reaction from MyStomachHurts in How prestigious is UT Southwestern in the biomed community?
First off, congratulations on your interview! You should be very proud of yourself and your accomplishments. I may be biased because I personally didn't consider prestige a factor in deciding where to apply, but I think what matters is your fit with the program. You seem interested in the program, so as long as you're comfortable there and your research goals align with the program's, prestige shouldn't matter. Go to the interview and see how you like the faculty and students you talk to, then base your decision on that. Also, look at the outcomes from the program - even less well-known programs can graduate students with accomplished careers. Best of luck from a fellow fall 2021 applicant!

I'm not planning on having any slides or figures. I've also heard the bit about interviews being more like conversations, and from my friends who have interviewed already it seems like interviewers are more interested in the general trends of your data rather than specific details that a figure would show.

This may be controversial: I don't think that it's worth investing your heart and soul into the Ivies or the UC's. For domestic & international students alike, it's a game of 3D chess to determine who they call to interview. More often than not, it's domestic students with connections and/or legacy. I feel for international students because they are going through rings of fire due to our current administration and the lack of available spots in the Ph.D pipeline throughout the U.S. Going to lesser known and/or top 50 programs, doing a killer job, then kicking ass in your postdoc may be the most secure route for now. I know that this is a path that non-traditional domestic students consider since we're also in a difficult position here when competing against your stereotypical "strong" applicants. Don't lose the faith and keep pushing for your dreams. It's going to happen one way or another. ❤️

I'm going business casual, but not fully formal. I got a blazer and am wearing a turtleneck top under it for the interview day, and then I'm planning to just wear a nice blouse for panels. I'm still planning on wearing nice pants too, just so I can feel confident and powerful lol. I heard someone say to at least wear a nice pair of jeans in case you need to get up for whatever reason during the interview.

Have you checked the expanded article on eligibility by the NIH? If you grew up poor, essentially, you may be eligible. Also, you may be eligible as a woman. Here's the link: https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-20-031.html  To answer your question, you must meet NIH eligibility to enter a PREP program.
There's also the possibility of working as a research tech somewhere.
Considering you have a PhD interview, I'd just focus on nailing that! Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions!

Another option for a great, life-changing postbac research opportunity is the IRTA/CRTA program at the NIH campus in Bethesda (https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/postbac_irta). Similar to PREP, it's fully funded with health/dental/etc. The application process is somewhat unconventional -you submit a general application with your information then it's your responsibility to contact PI's that you'd be interested in working with to see if they have space for a postbac in their lab. In some cases PI's can also reach out to you after seeing your application in the pool. I think generally people start contacting PI's from around now up until March-ish. The program doesn't have any requirements to be an URM and you can apply even if you have a master's (you get a higher starting stipend too!). There are also lots of resources and events through the training center for preparing for grad school if you end up having to reapply. If you're able to move to Bethesda and want independent research experience I highly recommend it.
I'm a current postbac applying to grad school with pretty successful results so far I'd be happy to chat more about the program if anyone is interested!

I've received 10 invites so far, but decided to decline three offers because I'm still waiting to hear back from a few other programs and juggling a full-time job.
Do I have a chance with seven interviews? Starting to freak out ?
