Still waiting on Dal too (was waitlisted two years in a row, and this is my third year applying)! If there are indeed 550 applicants and 23 spots (according to last year's cohort), that means about a 4% chance of getting in... what a system, eh?
This time around I tried one school in the States-- UMaine-- and was accepted! I'm wondering if any fellow Canadians have also been accepted there? And if not, I just want to put the word out that there's a tuition agreement between UMaine and Canada, so we pay what in-state Maine students pay! The international fees are really what discouraged me from applying to schools down South, but this makes a huge difference! Perhaps consider this for next year...

Received a rejection letter of U of T via email today at 9:57 AM. Not really surprised; my sGPA wasn't outstanding (3.6-something from an American university with a different grading scale). I'll provide my stats for future applicants to reference -- 500+ volunteer hours, almost a decade of clinical research experience, author on multiple publications, lots of scholarships, a STEM master's degree, yet I don't think I'll ever be able to escape that 'C' grade I got in a theatre elective my senior year of undergrad haha :')
Thankfully, I was accepted to both of the American schools to which I applied (Northwestern University and Boston University). These schools seem to have taken a more holistic approach to applications, as their applications gave me more opportunities and space to explain my journey to SLP. I'll be accepting my offer to Northwestern and moving to Chicago this fall.
Congratulations to all who were offered admission! And to others who are also receiving less-than-ideal news, I stand in solidarity with you. Your stories and your potential are worth so much more than 2 years of grades and a 3,000-character summary, and I'm sure you will go on to do amazing things! ❤️

Hi everyone. Last year I got rejected and spent a full week crying every day. I had no backup plan aside from SLP. I knew from the bottom of my heart that it was the only thing I wanted this much.
Rejection HURTS. But you are stronger than a rejection. You just survived a pandemic, got into University for undergrad, and did so many incredible things that you might have forgotten about them, but at one point you dreamed of them.

I want you to know that I believe in you. When I got rejected so many people told me to consider other options. If you truly & deeply want SLP then screw everyone who doubts or doesn’t believe in you because I DO.

When I finished mourning my rejection, although I had graduated uni, I went back to school and did ELEVEN additional courses to get my GPA up while volunteering for an SLP & working at a job to support myself. It was not easy but I knew that this was what I wanted.
This year I was accepted by UOFT and McMaster and rejected by Western.
If you didn’t get in, just know that you are loved and you are a POWERFUL individual and ultimately you WILL get what you want - whatever it may be. Believe in yourself. Be kind to yourself. A rejection DOES NOT DEFINE YOUR WORTH. And know that even though I may not know you I believe in you too.

I see decisions on McMaster's portal (accepted!) and Western's portal (Waitlisted) but nothing on Orpas so I have no idea about U of T... ugh.

@SLPPLS101 I applied to several American schools just in case and thankfully have heard back from all of them and got into a couple pretty competitive programs! If I don't get in to one of the Canadian schools I applied to, I'll likely go to the states. However, I'd obviously prefer staying in Canada if I can because of the cost would be much lower. Friday can't come soon enough. ?

Hey everyone! Last year I was rejected from every school I applied to and I knew I wanted to apply in Canada again but I didn't know what to do while I waited until the 2022 application cycle. I accidentally found Minot State University, and it's a school in North Dakota (USA) that offers super cheap tuition (like - basically the same price as many Canadian schools) and they offer a Post-Baccalaureate in Communication Sciences and Disorders, which I'm currently doing. Basically it's a one-year program that provides you with sooo much clinical experience, they have an on-campus CSD clinic, and all of your profs are practicing SLPs and audiologists. Also, with the completion of the program you're offered admission into their 2 year SLP program. So basically, I'm reapplying to Canadian schools this year, but if I don't get into a school in Canada, I have this SLP program as a backup (AND it's literally the same price as if I were to go to a Canadian school!).  Another great thing is that there are so many Canadian students in the program too. Definitely would recommend checking the program out if you're interested, or you can DM me if you want more info
Also looool reading this back it sounds like an ad, but I swear it isn't! I just really like the program haha

    Hello everyone!
I've been reading the threads for a few years now but I just saw this post and wanted to create an account and share my experience! I applied to both McMaster and Western last year with a 3.75 GPA, 150+ hours of volunteer with SLPs, and lots of volunteer experience with CDAs, OTs and with the Brain Injury Association. I had a B in my anatomy prerequisite, but the rest were all A/A+s. I didn't get an interview with McMaster and I got waitlisted at Western (3rd quadrant).
I emailed Janet to ask how to improve my application and she said to think about upgrading my anatomy/physiology prerequisite and to "look at my application as a whole" - so my references and my letter of intent. She said I didn't need any more volunteer hours.
My grades of my last term of 4th year bumped up my GPA but then I also took a phonetics course and another anatomy prerequisite during my year off and did well in both of them - 4.0. I also volunteered with 2 Psychology labs online at University of Waterloo (where I did my undergrad) and that allowed me to have a better reference letter as well. I worked as an Educational Assistant for my year in between as well. Lastly, I sent my letter of intent to about 10 people and asked for feedback to make it better. My GPA this year ended up being an 3.85 and I got accepted to Western and Toronto and waitlisted at McMaster. I'm not sure what made the biggest difference in getting in or if it was a little bit of everything, but just thought I'd share what I did in case that helps. You got this!!! Don't give up hope!
I accepted my offer at Western - so that will open up a spot for someone who is waitlisted at Toronto!

    Hi everyone,
Congrats to everyone who got into the program!! I know it was a tough year and everything but it's awesome to see everyone achieving their goals :)
For those who did get in - I come here in hopes of a little advice. For some context, I was rejected from every school this semester, not even waitlisted. I have a decent GPA and some volunteer work, but all of my volunteer work was cut short due to COVID and I can't seem to find another placement. My school ends in late April, and after that I'll be working full time at a job with weird hours which is another factor standing in the way of volunteering.
I was thinking about retaking my worst/some prerequisite courses to boost my GPA, and I was hoping to get a volunteer or research position, but obviously that's a bit more difficult right now. Does anyone have advice for finding these opportunities when you're already graduated? Most of what I have found has been through my university, and I'll no longer have access to those services. Additionally, has anyone done anything online  during the pandemic that helped bulk up your CV? Or just any general tips on aspects of your application that they changed after initial rejection that got you accepted this round?
I would really appreciate any insight.

    Hi everyone,
I got rejected from everywhere I applied to (3 schools) for my first time applying and am so thankful to have had this forum to read throughout the application process. You can try to explain the competitive nature to family and friends but I have found so much comfort and validity to my stress reading through everyone's comments -- and the positivity and encouragement makes it impossible to be bitter knowing that so many people have tried 2-3 times to get in, acceptances are so well deserved.  To be honest, I have felt a little isolated in my stress and having to keep picking myself up because no one around me has gone through the same thing, so thank you to those who have shared stories and experiences.
I wrote this yesterday to help process my rejections and instantly felt a little lighter, I hope those of you who didn't get accepted this year can find some light in it too.
    For months,
    I awoke mid-sleep
    My subconscious
    alight
    Having dreamt
    Of delight,
    acceptance
    Finally,
what I so deeply wished for
    validity
to all that I’d worked for.

    Rejected,
    Denied,
    Yet --
    I am proud
    Of what grace
    And self-
    compassion
    I have found,

    The push-pull
    Of crippling
    self doubt
    And unwavering
    self belief;
    The balance
    Of ambition
    And patience

    When the weight
    of uncertainty
    Felt too heavy to share,
    gratitude,
    made-up mantras
    aligned
    to reset my mind.
    A testament
    To growth,
    The reality -
    Of
    Resiliency.

    Surrendering to defeat
    Is not weak,
    if brief.
    Fuelled by
    Fierce vision
    And my why,
    I will rise,
    to honour
    All that i’ve tried for,
All that I have to give,
    All that I can be.

Oh geez I'm sorry to hear that. What email have you been using? non.degree@ubc.ca has been quick to respond to me lately but I've also had nightmare experiences trying to get through to them in the past so I hear you
Edit to add: you don't have to take it till the summer before the program (source - I have friends who've done it) but the registration process takes a while and sometimes the class fills up. Non-degree reg is in very early april usually so if you chose to go that route, I would get registered as a non-degree student in early jan next year (or start bugging them in december even) and then if you get in, pay your deposit and register or  get on the waitlist asap. Hope that is helpful

That is really frustrating. What I heard is that you need to have a plan to complete the course at the time you apply. The course is offered in the 2nd winter semester and summer so for example if you apply you can be registered to take it in the winter semester or you can say that you plan to take it in the summer (you can't be registered because summer registration won't be open yet). So I think technically you can wait because you hear about acceptances in April and the summer courses doesn't start until may. I feel like I would be too stressed to test it out without confirmation from the program though.

Given the much greater selection of online courses because of COVID this past year, it may be a little easier than past years to do this. As a previous UofT student I was able to register as a non-degree student pretty easily and take some online courses last semester. It might be worth contacting some registrars for schools that have the courses you are interested in to inquire about the process of registering as a non-degree. I also preferred these types of courses over Athabasca's self-directed style. I completed all of my prereqs except for one at UofT so if you're curious about any specific courses or need help navigating the website or course codes shoot me a message

    Hey all,
As the verdicts to some of our applications role in, I am feeling the anxiety get to me. First I wanted to start off by congratulating those who have been waitlisted or accepted into McGill!! Now for those who have yet to hear anything such as me, my friend enlightened me with some consolations the other day that made me feel a lot better about things. She quoted some very wise words of Shakespeare to me "if it be not now, yet it will come". Although I know the quote is about death, when thinking about it out of context, if things do not go they way that you want them, do not forget that you can try again later. If you do not get in this year round, you may the next. I am sending good vibes to everyone here and I hope things go well for all of you!
    Pav!
