    Hey guys!

Happy to have found this topic.

Ivan, I'm brazilian too, it's nice to see you've been active on this forum šŸ™‚

    Ā

So this cycle I applied to some rhetoric and composition programs and to two SLA/APPLING programs (I'm interested in second language writing and multilingual writers identity, thus my research could fit well both fields).

These are the 2 programs I applied to:

    Ā

    MSU SLS - no interview, rejection;

Penn State Applied Linguistics - no interview, no word yet... I am considering a rejection too, but would like to be sure. Someone posted on the results page that they got an interview there.

Has anyone heard from Penn State? Good luck everyone and hopefully we can keep our sanity until April 15th. āœØ

Hi, Conswrtng! Nice "meeting" you!Ā I have never talked to another Brazilian here. This site is very helpful. I've been here since I applied to the MA in 2020 :)Ā

Keep me posted about your apps. I hope you get in!Ā

Haha yes it still says ā€œunder program reviewā€. It seems silly that they wonā€™t just put ā€œwaitlistedā€ at this point!Ā
Did you get an acceptance from Maryland?Ā
    Ā

Iā€™ve already decided on NC State :)Ā

No, but I emailed Ms. Moon and she told me that I was waitlisted because they received over 150 applications. It's very odd; I don't know anyone who was admitted.

I'm glad you'll join NC State. Congrats!!!!

Has anyone heard back from the University of Maryland's TLPL Program?Ā  I had an interview in mid/late December and have yet to hear back.

    Did you get in?Ā

I know the feeling. I just finished an interview. Was told I'd hear about results in "2 weeks". That always seems to be the waitlist rejection phrase, at least in my experience.

    Ā

Looking at all the previous year's information I'm thinking no more requests are coming in unless it is early next week. But you never know, I got a really late interview invite to Michigan State, well after the usually schedule and everyone else's experience.

I wouldnā€™t say this is s rejection phrase. I know my advisor says it to everyone after he interviews them. My advisor is the director of my program, so Iā€™d say itā€™s a pretty standard phrase that doesnā€™t mean much!

Hi, thank you for creating the thread!

    Michigan State- rejected

Maryland - interviewed, but not optimistic

South Florida - interviewed and in waitlist (saw someone got an offer )

    Ohio - acceptedĀ

Also applied other programs, but heard of nothing.

Iā€™m glad you were interviewed by Maryland. Did you apply for the Applied Linguistics and Language Education Ph.D. in the College of Education or did you apply for the Ph.D. in Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics?Ā
    Ā

Congratulations on your admittance to Ohio!Ā

  6. 1. Yes! We usually have assistantships here.Ā

    2. Well, we don't make a lot of money here, but it's enough for me and my family (my wife and two kids). Most programs pay "decent" stipends.Ā

    3. It's usually simple. You'll need a statement of purpose, recommendation letters, resume, writing sample, and some cases GRE.Ā

    Hope it helps!

I was a professional web developer when I moved from the UK to the US at 24. I didn't start undergrad until 31, lol.

I'm envious in some ways, in others, not so much. I'm married, established, and focused. Not that others aren't focused in their 20s, but I could imagine thatĀ sacrificing competing interests, such as social lives, sex, and romance, could make you feel like you're missing out. I've also had someĀ time off work to careĀ for a relative, so I've had enough free time to drive myself crazy.

Iā€™m starting grad school this Fall semester at 40 ?

  8. Hi guys!Ā
    Ā

As you know, I was accepted to the University of Illinois and the University of Alabama. I already accepted Illinoisā€™s offer, but I can change my decision until April 15th. If you guys had to choose between these two outstanding universities, which one would you choose?

    Illinois:Ā

    Stipend: USD 12,738

    Health insurance: partialĀ

Proof of funding: USD 24,000 (for myself + dependents)

Sponsor: a friend of mine, an American citizen.

    - - -

    AlabamaĀ

    Stipend: USD 14,364

    Health insurance: full coverageĀ

Proof of funding: USD 16,036 (because I have 3 dependents - if it were only me, I would need to show proof of funding of USD 1,036)Ā

Loomis Scholarship funding (book aid): USD 800

Sponsor: I wouldnā€™t need a sponsor at the UA. I can use my own funds.Ā
    Ā

Iā€™m curious to know which one you guys would choose.Ā

Hi Ivan! Congratulations on the acceptance and funding! I know a little about funding as I have two dependents as well. I asked several schools about this and all of them told me that I needed from 3000 to 4000 USD per dependent. In my case, I needed to show proof for two people (husband and baby) If I was accepted. I was not, so I don't have to worry about that right now. I will have a whole year to put some more money together to take my family with me for 4 years. I don't know the situation at the schools you applied to, but check the information web page for international students a those universities and that would def be helpful.Ā

    Ā

    Thanks, VLE!Ā
    Ā

Iā€™ve just talked to someone in my departmentĀ and they told me Iā€™ll have to show a proof of funding of US$24,241 ? Iā€™m not happy with that. I dunno what Iā€™m going to do.

congrats Ivan! So excited and proud of you! Did you receive your funding offer yet?

    Ā

Sorry, I only saw it now.Ā
    Ā

Yes, I received my funding offer even before. The head of the department emailed me to say I had been awarded financial support in the form of at 33% time Teaching Assistantship for the academic years of 2021-2022 and 2022-2023. I couldnā€™t be happier.Ā
    Ā

I am now only concerned about the proof of funding because I have three dependents, but I havenā€™t received any emails from Illinois talking about it. I emailed the program director today, but he said he doesnā€™t know much about this kind of thing, so he forwarded my message to grad services. The information about proof of funding is available on their website, but I donā€™t know if it applies to teaching assistants as well. USD $ 24,000 for 3 depends is a lot of money.... letā€™s see what they say!Ā
    Ā

The open house was yesterday... it was awesome!Ā ?
