Thanks! Right now, ASU is my top choice. But if FL comes through for me... lol

Once I add everyone to the group, I'll see if there's a good time. We can have more than one meeting if it goes well, and it doesn't have to be soon. I imagine some of the people in the group have school/work/kid responsibilities.

When might this coven poetry meeting take place? What might it entail?

That waiting game is fun, isn't it? ? I've got my fingers crossed for you (and me!) Though, I'm not in the top 3 on ASU's waitlist so I don't think it's likely the offer would come my way if you ended up declining. Best wishes to you wherever you go!

I see... I'm here to shamelessly ask how you're feeling about that ASU offer? ? Congratulations, by the way!

This reminds me, if you're waitlisted for Poetry at U of AL, I've decided to decline their offer. ?

University of Alabama offers a simultaneous MA alongside the MFA as well. That's one of the big draws for me actually.

I got some advice from a professor and he said to apply to schools that once you research their faculty, read their works and styles... and then figure out what appeals to you about them. To really make sure it is a good fit for YOU and not just a big name. That there are some really awesome instructors at other schools. Not everyone (who teaches and has a family) wants to pay for the crazy cost of living where those big name schools are. He said ideally apply to 5 dream schools and 5 realistic schools.
I also don't want to go to a school where they refer to you as a number (like that's #3,  or there goes #4) cough..Iowa.

Honestly, rather than having a high number of applications, I'd consider including some lesser-known well-funded programs. You had a decent selection this year, but I'd consider them all "upper echelon" programs -- very well-known and very competitive. Nothing wrong with shooting for the stars! But there are a lot of well-funded programs which are significantly less competitive while still offering a "top tier" experience (Miami U Ohio and Bowling Green State come to mind).
Of course, no fully-funded program is easy to get into, but I think we underestimate how big of a difference it makes applying to 5 programs that admit 10% vs 10 programs that admit <1%. Not to mention that 10 apps is a very high workload.
Anyway, I'm sorry this year didn't pan out. I hope this response comes of as "helpful + encouraging" rather than "rubbing it in."

    Hi,
My plan is if I don't get funding to try to find a full time job at the school-as long as they offer tuition discount to full time employees.. so you are getting paid and a deep discount. Most have a lot of listings on their employment pages. If you REALLY want to go, work a year and while there, also work towards applying for everything you possibly can for the second year. And most universities have really great benefits too. Sometimes the schedule doesn't work out but most professors I've worked for are willing to work around class schedules or work something out. Just a thought.
    Good Luck,
    Cristie

The support at Alabama sounds great, but give me that Arizona sun and nature every time.

Yeah, those are two exciting programs. Being able to work with Natalie Diaz and Solmaz Sharif sounds like a dream, but Alabama giving support for four years is fantastic, and would give more time to work. This isn't helpful at all to you!, but that's just to say that those are two great programs, and I'm sure either choice will be fantastic.

Backpack or messenger bag? For pete's sake, this is grad school, not high school! Who cares what I bring my stuff to school in, as long as it gets there? If all I have on hand is a paper bag, then that's what it'll be. No one will notice or care, and if they do that's they're problem, not mine.

Brown has a first year fellowship with no teaching and a $26k stipend, ~$3k summer stipend between the first and second years, for starters.

I also get these Chinese language phone calls, and they use number spoofing so that even after I block them, they just call from a different number. A few weeks ago, I got a call from a Syracuse area code, and my heart truly skipped a beat, and then I remembered that I didn't apply to Syracuse.
(The acceptance call I did get was from a different state than the school is in; presumably, it was the cell phone of the professor who called me.)

    My portal still says
Your application is currently under review and you will
be notified via e-mail when a decision has been released.

Anyone with FSU news, can you tell me what your portal looks like? I still haven't received an email, but the notice at the top of the screen that said (something along the lines of) "your application is awaiting review" is gone. Nothing else has changed, just that block of text is gone. Gah

i kind of already put up my goodbye forum post but i lowkey missed yall so i came back. all this troll bullshit and their absolute hatred and targeted attacks at certain people is shitty. it's despicable, and if i knew enough about computers i would say block their ip address or something.
to conclude, fuck what they say. yall are glorious people. this forum has been lovely. i may be thinking about writing a poem out of all the bullshit that has been spewed into this forum, and someday when i am bored enough, i will. until then, who wants to come be sad about brown R's with me (even though I knew it wasn't the place for me, getting an ivy rejection hurt)

I personally love that my inbox filtered my Brown rejection into the spam folder, as if to say, "Well we don't need any of that nonsense. Off with you!"

I'm still waiting on 6 programs. I'm assuming on on SOME waitlists, since I've seen other people post rejections, but I totally feel this. Idk, I like to hold out just a bit of optimism. In my world view, there's no harm in waiting until I hear a "no" to actually give up on places (unless it messes with you psychologically, but I've been through a lot of rejection so it's not as big of a deal to me).
    Here's chronicle:
USC: No idea what's happening here, most other people posted acceptances/rejections early February, I sent them an email about a week ago and they said I'd get my results by email when they're available, so I'm guessing maybe a waitlist?
University of Utah: NO idea what's happening here, a few people posted waitlists in poetry, but it's been total crickets in fiction.
Florida State University: Most acceptances happened early February, assuming I'm probably waitlisted here too since I've seen some rejections pop up over the last few days. But I also saw someone else get a call for their waitlist (but they were PHD not MFA) so maybe not. Or maybe they're just rolling out rejections and it's yet to come, idk.
Oklahoma: A bit of movement in early February, but crickets since. Some posted rejections way back then, so I'm guessing I'm on a waitlist here too, though how long is anyone's guess.
Las Vegas: There's not been a lot posted here, but since someone has posted a wait list and an acceptance, I'm guessing I'm lingering at the bottom of the pool
Washington State University: No idea here. This one is a Rhet/Comp program and I've seen like 1 person post an acceptance to it, nothing else.

Just got a no from Houston They sent out a pretty nice rejection letter before the automated one from the school, which was a pretty good move IMHO. Either way, if you're waiting on Houston, they'll probably have a decision for you soon.
