Still waiting on my top choice. . . running out of ways to occupy my mind 🌀

I only applied to 2 schools in the area this year & I'm reading one as a soft rejection.

I'm hoping we see some decisions today!

I'm in the same exact situation so I feel your pain. Two schools, one I'm 99.9% sure to be a soft rejection.

But I'm sure a lot of things will be moving (hopefully) next week!

Oh, that's awesome!!! My father is from Sicily but grew up around Milan after an earthquake devastated his hometown of Partanna. We are going to Milan first and then we will be flying down to Sicily :)

Thank you so much for the tips - I was wondering how the waiting game was going to sort out with being 6 hours ahead :) The best of luck to you :)

    good luck to you too!

About to leave for Italy in a few hours - Sarah Lawrence and Columbia, it would be nice to get some good news before airplane mode goes on!

Also, for those of you who are local to NYC, I asked TNS if I could meet with a faculty member to discuss the program and see if it's a fit and they have been really accommodating. They're going to set me up with a faculty member and a student after Spring Break, which I thought was really nice of them. I think it's worth asking for :)

I live in Italy. :) Just know that it might be a new and tiny torture to have most of this mfa stuff silent for the first good half of the day, then slowly begin to trickle out around 3/4 p.m. On the other hand, you'll wake up in the morning with a good couple inches added to the google sheet.

You would think that quiet mornings with no news might be peaceful, and to that I would say: for you I hope they are. ❤️

    Safe travels!

  6. Hey - I don't know if anyone saw on Draft - but a current student at IWW commented that all Iowa acceptances are out.

I didn't get one and can I just say I am truly RELIEVED TO KNOW SOMETHING! I was not accepted to Iowa. My plans for not moving to Iowa officially commence. (unless I'm waitlisted.) (but let's not get our hopes up again.)

  7. I'm being slowly tortured because I only applied to two schools & apparently they both like to take their sweet time. I would at least like to *know* something. Even if it's a rejection.

If you've at least heard back from *a* school, I'm jealous. Nothing has arrived in my inbox, not a peep.

Also if I reapply next year I think I might just chill and not join Draft/this forum because watching everyone get their results, hundreds and hundreds of results, is like a tiny little hit of dopamine that turns into confusion and anxiety.

    (iowa? brown? r u there)

Yeah happily! I did my undergraduate degree at Brown, so this information might not be fully accurate but is what I noticed from being in some of the same classes/spaces and working with the faculty. I really love this program, and I would love as many people to get the chance to hear more about it as possible!

I think the reason they get that reputation is because their program focuses a lot less on professional skills and more on inviting experimentation that refines craft. For example, one workshop is called "Foreign Home" and forces you to choose two things you have never done before, learn everything you can about them, and then bring them back into your 'home' craft/genre. For someone who has a clear vision of what they want to use an MFA to accomplish, the program might not fit as it tries to keep agents out and doesn't offer the pre-professional courses that can assist those clear goals. Workshops might also get a bit 'lofty' for those who want to stick a bit closer to the text itself.

However, if you're looking to experiment and write without the focus being on the outcome, I think Brown is a great option. And, in cases like Moshfegh or Lerner, I don't think the program looks for people who are 'experimental' as much as it looks for people who are deeply dedicated to their style, no matter what that style is (so even a more literary fiction person can benefit from Brown!).

All that said, I think they have some of the most supportive faculty and knowledgeable workshop communities around. I hope this rant is helpful, and feel free to ask anything else I can help with!

    thank you!! Super helpful!!!!

  9. Also not to triple text in the g chat (sry) but how normal is it have literary agents going into an MFA? I've looked up current students at IWW as well as recent Iowa admits to see that a few already have literary agents, one being signed with the same agent as Sheila Heti (holy shit). I'm wondering why someone would want to get an MFA if they already have an agent. I guess it would just be a sort of long paid fellowship to work on the book they are already set to publish? Seems cool & wish it could apply to me. Also is a little discouraging.

I would recommend not contacting personally. I know the professors fairly well, and I get the vibe that they prefer to be 'left alone' somewhat for the decisions process. That said, they're all incredibly kind, so I don't think it would be a point against you by any means. However, I think waiting until mid-March since they stress mid-March might be wiser. Also, I am happy to answer Brown question people have since I know it's a bit mysterious over there!

    Thanks for this!

Is there any other info you could share about Brown? I know it's known for being a program that focuses more on experimental writing and mixed media/arts. This confuses me slightly because I also know writers like Ottessa Moshfegh went there whose writing (to me) doesn't quite seem experimental (but maybe it used to be before she got popular) but more so literary fictionesque. Anyway don't really know what I'm asking but if you know anything more about what they're looking for or if you have stories of bad or good experiences with the program would love to hear them!

(Also because I'm wondering if it's a school I should reapply to next year should I fail this cycle.)

It likely wouldn't hurt your chances (unless you kept nagging them), but you're not likely to get any concrete answers either. Brown usually sends stuff out in early-mid March, I'm expecting we'll hear from them in the next 2-3 weeks

Yeah you're probably right. A response like this is what they would most likely send me anyway.

Just feeling anxious, like everyone else in this time.

  12. I have another q about Iowa ~ if one lives outside of the U.S., will Iowa allow them to (slightly) keep (one little piece of) their dignity and NOT send a rejection via snail mail? I.e. just reject via email/portal?

If so, that would comfort me greatly.

(I'd rather not dread going to my mailbox for the month of March lolz.)

    ----

Also I want to share a quote by Federico Fellini that feels relevant (!):

"One of the greatest handicaps is to fear a mistake. You have stopped yourself. You have to move freely into the arena, not just to wait for the perfect situation, the perfect moment... If you have to make a mistake, it's better to make a mistake of action than one of inaction."

Applying to MFA programs is taking a risk on yourself and your art. If you don't get into any programs this year, you should still be proud of yourself for stepping into the arena and making a mistake of action. Some people stay on the sidelines and never step in. ❤️ PLUS this is only one risk of hundreds/thousands (millionz?) that we will take as writers. ~ Keep taking risks love u all

    Has anyone heard from Brown?

Someone (I forgot who) on this thread said they emailed Brown about the playwriting track and were told notifications would go out next week. I'm not sure whether to assume this is also true of fiction/poetry but hopefully?

Historically it looks like Brown sends acceptances as early as March 7th and as late as March 18th ~

  14. Hi everyone! I have a question. Does anyone know how acceptances/rejections go out if you are living abroad? For example does Iowa send a rejection via snail mail and/or do they call you to accept if you have a foreign phone number? Or will they contact only via email if you live abroad? Seems expensive otherwise! For context, the only two programs I applied to were Iowa and Brown (lol I know good luck right).

  15. Got into Chicago this morning too. :) So excited! Will probably accept.

However, more funding would be appreciated. Does anyone with funding know if they will end up declining the offer? I'm not sure if the money spreads when people decline admission, but maybe?

Also - is anyone worried about schools going online next year again?

  16. Waiting for HDS and Chicago Divinity...

I have lots of other work to do but the days are dragging. Can't help but check my application status 87 x a day.

Anyone have any advice about how to distract yourself? ?
