Can you elaborate on the name recognition outside academia vs. recognition within academia? Does this mean if you want to work in a research lab, then UTK is good, but if you want to be a professor, then UTK is bad?

Also when you said UTK is a safety school, is it just a safety school for their economics / finance PhD Program or is it a safety school in general for pretty much all of their graduate programs?

You don't have to waste your time apologizing to Prolixity. Prolixity has trolled me as well as others several times. Prolixity also sometimes has inappropriate tones when people ask him questions or respond to his questions.

Hey chaospaladin, I hope I don't come off as a jerk, but for these sorts of things I think it's better if you did most of the legwork yourself. Questions like these are the types you could answer just as effectively on your own--Googling the right keywords works wonders. I'm sure if you spend some more time browsing department websites (my guess is that most people who applied to Ph.D. programs looked at the websites of >50 departments and narrowed down the field to 5-15 programs to which they applied), you'll find your answers pretty quickly.

In answer to your question, I found a few chemistry Ph.D. programs that don't appear to have GPA cutoffs: UC Riverside, UT El Paso, UT Dallas. I'm sure there are a lot more; you just have to look for them. I hope this helps.

waddle reacted to chaospaladin in Rejected from Bioengineering, should I reapply?
What school rejected you? Well here's the thing. In order for you to get accepted to the program, you must receive approval from:

    1. the Bioengineering Department

    2. the dean of the Graduate Division

Here is what I speculate might have happened:

The Bioengineering Department could have approved your application because you had recommendation from the professor within the program and had a lot publications and research, but the dean of the Graduate Division rejected the application since the Graduate Division probably has a minimum GPA threshold of 3.00.

What you could do is retake some classes or take more classes to zero out your GPA to a 3.00 and then reapply.

Don't you mean "organizing"? You should let them know where your other competitive offers are coming from, so they will compete against other universities for you. You may receive a higher stipend.

I just had a terrible nightmare last night. It was so vivid I woke up at 5 AM and had trouble going back to sleep. I dreamed that I did NOT get the fellowship and what was worse was to see the rating sheets. I saw that my advisor rated me lowest among all the other ratings, haha! I'm going insane!

Hola! Nice to see a feathered friend out on these parts. Hard to type with this beak, right? This touch screen on my iPad doesn't make it any easier. I mean, I'm pecking and dragging, but it won't zoom in! Oh well, I guess I'm just going to perch on this branch here and check my stocks in Amazon, maybe break out my Kindle. I've been reading The Jungle Book. Hakuna matata! Oh, wait, wrong movie. Oops, got to preen now, will "fly" by this forum later!

Ohhhhh. You meant that, the fact that she is racist can't be argued against, NOT that one can't make a solid case she is racist. That makes a lot more sense, lol. I'm sorry; I'll edit my first post accordingly.

My point about why everyone is suddenly so concerned about the crying white girl, however, remains.

This thread was the one that made me finally write e-mails to the programs I won't be attending this fall and let them know. I only made my decision recently, but I was having some trouble getting to the point where I was willing to close the other doors.

Once you get going it's not that bad. I only thought I was going to let one of the places know, (and then slowly close the others as I became absolutely sure) but then once I got rolling I realized I was already sure and I ended up sending five e-mails to three institutions. (Usually the prof I was in contact with + the grad coordinator.) I thanked everyone involved and 30 minutes later I had both let the programs know and made a steak for breakfast.

It's painless once you start. I'm going to eat my breakfast now.

The CGS resolution given at http://www.cgsnet.or..._Resolution.pdf clearly states "Students are under no obligation to respond to offers of financial support prior to April 15; earlier deadlines for acceptance of such offers violate the intent of this Resolution." So (if the school in question is a signatory of the resolution) I think you should definitely report this matter to the CGS.

The CGS resolution is more than just a "gentlemen's agreement" among schools.

RE Legality -- Yes, it's perfectly legal. The Council of Graduate Schools' April 15 deadline is nothing more than a "gentlemen's agreement" among schools. You, the student, are simply a third party who benefits from the agreement. You're not really a signatory to the agreement, so you don't really have any standing to challenge the agreement.

Just thought I'd add my opinion on that since the legality issue seems to come up frequently in these discussions.

    Best wishes.

I totally disagree with you, LadyL. you treat your acceptance as property, as if its something you own that you can do whatever you'd like with. the reality is that, by sitting on an offer that you know you will reject, you are making life worse for a number of people on the waitlist. so, sure, it's your "right" not to inform the school of your decision just like its my "right" not to be kind to strangers, not to donate to charity, or to throw food and goods away instead of donating them, etc.

the note you received is definitely a little terse, but i think you should consider the positions of others (the department, students on the waitlist) on not just your own fancy in this situation.

I visited and found it kind of stale. It's a wonder it's still able to fill people's needs. Hopefully it'll move away from the old mold if it wants to stay fresh. All those crusty old professors expect their incoming students to butter them up so heavily. And the weather, omg, you get toasted -- though you'll never run short of sunbeams. On the plus side, they do have rolling admissions, and the French and Italian programs are quite enticing. On the whole, it may pan out for you, but you better not go against the grain. I hope you're able to find a nice little slice of life at Bread Loaf.

To my mind Bread Loaf has been unfairly panned. While it does have a reputation as a "party school" - the undergraduate population is constantly baked - the ranking of its graduate program continues to rise. Academic traditionalists are sure to like its fine marble architecture and (frankly) whitebread demographics, while radicals may appreciate the role various other cultures have played in helping it grow. Don't worry about your funding kneads - its upper-crust benefactors have ensured there's plenty of research dough.
