Rents in Manhattan are ridiculous. It's probably a bit more practical to live in Jersey and take trips to Manhattan for recreation. The NJTransit trains go from New Brunswick to Penn Station for $13 though.

Heh, I waited 15 years after undergrad to start grad school. If I were doing everything over and reapplying to PhD programs, the one thing I'd do is apply to more of them. Of course, funded PhD programs are much harder to get accepted into than unfunded master's but I didn't anticipate just how much harder. So the one thing I'd do differently is apply to more programs. I didn't apply to a few because they were overseas (should have applied anyway just to see what they said,) didn't apply to one because I thought the web site description seemed vague (but maybe their program is a lot better than their site,) didn't apply to another because it seemed like there was no funding (in truth, you'll never find out what the funding situation is until you apply,) and... just plain forgot about the last one (that was just dumb.)

I'm moving from northern New Jersey (right outside of NYC) to Arizona. Being from the South, and having lived most of my adult life in California and Florida, I absolutely hatehatehate the winters here. This year, I slipped on the ice and fell down the stairs, injuring my back. Then I fell three days later and dislocated my shoulder. Then while I was going through physical therapy for my shoulder, I slipped on the ice again and fell on my injured shoulder.

I am completely finished with winter. You can have it. I never need to see snow, sleet, or ice again.

Golden Monkey got a reaction from mandarin.orange in Let's compare student debt! How much do you have?
One of the effects of starting grad school 12ish years later than everyone else is the fact that I had money put away from all those years of working. So coming out of my master's, my debt is zero. My PhD is funded, but the stipend isn't enough to live on, so I imagine I'll be dipping into savings a bit, which I'm prepared for.

I didn't go to grad school for so many years because I looked at the finances every few years and thought, "I can't afford that!"

But finally at some point, I realized I could.

Here's one more piece of information about ageism. An article about Madonna confronting age stereotypes. She says that older people are not allowed to be adventurous.

A PhD certainly qualifies as an adventure so non-traditional students are viewed as inappropriate risk takers and crazy rather than balanced adventurers.

Pop superstar, Madonna says she refuses to fit into anyone’s idea of what a 50-year-old woman should be. She accuses society of suffering from ageism according to online reports: “Not only does society suffer from racism and sexism, it also suffers from ageism.” The singer said that she had no intention of changing her exercise routine or form-fitting clothing to suit the norms of society.

Adding that she was not a conformist, Madonna was quoted as asking, “Once you reach a certain age you’re not allowed to be adventurous, you’re not allowed to be sexual.”

Madonna, who is now living in the UK with her husband, Guy Ritchie will be 50 in August.

Golden Monkey reacted to switch in "Non-Traditional" Grad School Applicants
I'm talking about the very best top 15 programs. I never see non-traditional students in the PhD programs at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, MIT, CalTech, etc. I only see non-trad students in lower programs beyond the top 30 or top 50 rankings. And within those programs there are still some traditional professors who test non-trad students. For some non-trad students that is not a big deal, but for others the professor asks essentially, "What is wrong with you that made you such an older student?" There are still a lot of traditional professors especially in the top programs. And fields like mathematics, the sciences, revolve heavily around precocious views of intelligence. The Fields Medal, for example, is for the MATHEMATICIAN UNDER 30 who has accomplished whatever. There is an equivalent medal in economics. The TOP SCIENTISTS have to be PRECOCIOUS, NATURALLY SMART, BORN SMART, EARLY ACHIEVERS.

Golden Monkey got a reaction from wendychina in What are the results so far for the older applicants?
Wondering if any of the older applicants had very different results from applying to master's programs than you did with PhDs? At the age of 38 (about to turn 39,) I applied to 3 master's programs and got 3 acceptances. Two were programs I was genuinely interested in, while the third was a "safety." Other than scholarships + loans, none of them were funded.

While applying to PhDs, I got 3 rejections out of 4 applications, despite the fact that my work during my master's degree was, well, honestly pretty good, plus the fact that I had LORs from some pretty well-known professors.

Makes me realize that when applying to unfunded masters programs, getting accepted isn't that big of a deal. When getting accepted to funded PhD programs, it's a pretty big deal.
