Carly, my recommendation is based upon my experiences. That is, I have heard how some tenured professors talk about undergraduates who write/say things like "really?" in reply to guidance they don't like, what they think of individuals who, for what ever reason, attempt to squeeze a square peg into a round hole, and the process which some call "networking,"

In my experience, and maybe the halls of history departments are unlike other areas of the Ivory Tower, professors have codes of conduct and personal preferences. Sometimes, undergraduates and graduates don't know they've crossed a line, or that there even was a line, until they realized that they're not being mentored or supported while their peers are.

IRT to your usage of the word "spin," I made no assumptions. I suggested that you not use it so you would not develop the habit of using words that can be unintentionally controversial. (I once got my head ripped off for calling a professor "doctor".)

Before taking FL's sound guidance, I recommend that you first check the professional guidelines of the relevant professional academic associations in your field of study.

More generally, I respectfully recommend that you not use in public terms like "sell" or "spin" or "network" or "hook." While such terms may be popular among some of your peers and acceptable in some quarters, they may not strike the right chord among those who take their craft and their profession seriously.  Just my experience-based two cents.

wtf is this. If you are not accepted it is because you are not as good as other people (even though you think your stats are "excellent"). Why do you have to spin your rejection around and say the adcom makes mistakes? This is not communist Russia. Only the best students should be admitted to graduate programs.

So by your logic I should feel blessed with a third rated surgeon who failed anatomy but got into medical school because it is a "game". Also obviously I want a loser "psychologist" who "game" into grad school and somehow become licensed and I am suppose to trust that person with my mental health. Right.....

Whoa whoa, NOT okay. Grad school is a game, pure and simple. They define the rules, and we play to win. But do you really think that this has any correlation with what goes on out in the real world? There are great minds that have never gone to grad school and never need to. Charles Darwin never went to grad school and I'm pretty sure he revolutionized the world of modern thought for centuries to come. Albert Einstein never went to grad school and he is considered one of the greatest minds to ever live!

I'm really sorry, and I can understand how painful this must be. But it's not that unusual, and you're definitely not alone. There are plenty of people who have to re-tool and try again next year. But you really want this, and you think this is the right path for you, you'll try again.

Do you love applying to, and keeping track of, 10-20 applications? Can't get enough of the sitting on pins and needles post-submission wait feeling and post-interview rejections!?! Then you'll love the rejected across-the-board club! Clinical applicants especially welcome!

    14/14 clinical rejections! Go me!

if you get rejected by that many places maybe you are not a very good student and would make a terrible psychologist. Please consider another career.

    @PsychGirl1...
Firstly, please specify where you are having trouble following my replies and I will clarify and avoid a similar lack of clarity when replying in future.

Secondly, I can't help but feel that I need to 'defend' myself here.
I think that I have a pretty good idea about what I want to do, and have taken the right steps to evaluate this (e.g. informational interviewing, research assistantships, clinical experiences etc... having said that I will continue to do so in future). I have not elaborated on it here... my posts have already been quite lengthy and I think that elaborating about what I "want to do" in a response might be quite lengthy. Moreover, I think elaborating on my point of what I want to do might be tangential. I think that you are implying that I don't know what I want to do and have come misconceptions about what I want to do, and perhaps you are right. However, for the sake of this discussion please assume that I know what I want to do, unless you feel compelled to play career counsellor.

My question was about the job outlook of clinical psychology and if these positions were becoming fewer in number (hence the "dying out" comment).
If positions are becoming fewer in number than I think it is very important to consider this and not to ignore the "job outlook/situation/rarity/etc". I think if this is the case this would have direct implications for "what I want to do". What I am definitely not willing to sacrifice is "what I want to do" if there are no positions.

Please again understand that I am talking about Toronto, Ontario and asking if this is similar in other regions. Consider that there might be regional differences.

A few clarifications/corrections on my earlier comments...

What I meant by doing research in a clinical setting rather than an academic one, along with clinical practice was that I am interested in a career as a clinician-scientist at a hospital. There are a lot of clinician-scientists in lots of areas in a lot of university-affiliated hospitals in Toronto and other cities in Canada. I'm not going to go into the concept because I think it is fairly straight forward but if you need further clarification and evidence I can provide it.
Im not sure if by academic medical centre you mean university-affiliated hospital, if it these are similar concepts. Obviously the terminology and practice surrounding this concept, like other things, differ between regions.

Thank you for making the distinction that research positions are not necessarily rare, but competitive. You are right.

When applying to Canadian programs, having a Master's will not hold you back when applying to PhD programs.
Canadian school's generally follow a bachelors-masters-doctorate system, or the Bologna Process (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bologna_process)- although not officially. Israel follows the Bologna Process unofficially as well (again see wikipedia article, it explains the politics behind this).

If any other Canadians could corroborate the info above that would be great. I'd like this forum to know how Canadian schools work!!!

Alot of the grad students in the lab I have a RAship in have attended my university since their undergrad (5 out of 6 as well as a visiting fellowship student who has attended her home institution since her undergrad).

Is there any way to compensate for 'academic inbreeding' during undergrad/grad studies (e.g. exchanges, visiting fellowships, post-docs etc), or is this simply frowned upon?
Is this more of a concern when 'academic inbreeding' occurs from undergrad to grad studies, or when grad students get a tenure track position at the same uni they did their grad studies at?

This is a really good point. My advisor told me about how her PhD advisor moved to a different school partway through her program and there wasn't really anyone else she wanted to work with, so I made the number of people at the school that I wanted to work with part of my rating system. I also included research interests, goals of the program (does everyone go in to academia? what is the program designed to prepare you for?), general impression, location, cost of living, and crime.

I imagine a better way might be to look at some articles that are about what you're interested in and find those people. That way, you can specifically look for people in your area of interest without having to go through every faculty members' profile.

I'm a big fan of pumpkin carving and sharing my research. So I was thinking, if people can share their research with haiku, wouldn't it be fun to share your research through the medium of a jackolantern?

I invite everyone to take a little break, go pick a pumpkin, and carve the main subject or idea of your research into it.

Once you carve your pumpkin, we can use flickr to share pictures of our glowing jack o'lanterns with a 1-sentence description.

This is anecdotal... but I've always heard of studies that have shown of the unimportance of the GRE as a predictor of graduate success
I'm up in Canada though, and I know we probably have slightly different attitudes than America about this

The more Iook at this topic the more I think that this poster should re-take the GREs (whether or not they predict grad success) because it limits the poster's options significantly, and the poster should probably apply to the best fitting schools if they want to go to grad school, right?

You definitely want to email POI to make sure he/she is excepting students. Keep the email brief, and only ask questions that are easily answerable with a yes or no. (Really, the only question you need to be asking at this point in time is if they are accepting new students next year ... )

When I emailed last year, I introduced myself (name), gave one or two brief sentences about my background, mentioned that I was interested in working with them next year as a PhD student (and very briefly why I was interested in working with them), and then asked if they would be accepting students. We are talking six total sentences with one simple question.

If you keep it simple, you are more likely to get a response.

carlyhylton reacted to lewin in First author publication(s)
Let's just unpack a little more why it's rare for undergraduates to be coauthors on papers and almost unheard of to be first author. This situation comes out of my background, which is social psychology. Other disciplines may be different.

As a rule, only 1/3 of studies actually work and most papers need between three and six successful studies. So to get one paper you might need to run between three and fifteen experiments. Most undergraduates do one experiment, possibly two, for their honours thesis, so already the odds are bad. Even if you get a few studies that work well together, the peer review/publication process can take six months, or more if the initial decision is a "revise and resubmit". Practically speaking, there just isn't enough time as an undergraduate to get the studies run, and the paper written and reviewed.

Furthermore, to be published the studies need to have theoretical novelty and practical importance. Bluntly, most undergrads are not up to the task: they just haven't read enough or done enough to get a handle on what makes a good idea and what's a compelling way to test that idea. This is nothing to feel bad about--it's what they teach you in grad school! So if you're lucky enough to be on a novel/exciting project, the odds are that the idea was originally a professor's or a grad student's, and they'll quite likely end up being first author.

Honestly, I would take some time off to try to figure out what you want to do. Many professors I've talked to say that if you are not 100% determined and sure about grad school, it's best to take some time off first. The last thing you want to do is get stuck in a program you don't like and waste time/money. That said, you still have some time to figure out if you want to apply or not this application season.

    Good luck!!
