  1. There is no future in animal science from what my friend says who is a tech at upenn...
  2. On the first day of the protests here, my bus was delayed. That's not how to make me join the cause.
  3. If you don't have a bachelors, get one! Do the research there.
  4. I'm not sure if anyone would know, but let us know how you do!
  5. A solid point, after a test a girl came to me about her test and I noticed I had made a mistake grading another question (giving her an extra 8 points). The problem she was complaining on she wasn't entitled any more points, so when I had pointed it out she promptly left and didn't submit it for a regrade. Her grade wasn't very high anyway so it wasn't breaking any curve.
  6. So I have submitted my application. Wheewwwww
  7. I just grade so I do not have a choice in particular policies, however I'm grading a class which can be very subjective, and so I've had some issues with students trying to get points back. Some have been warranted, but other times they were just plain wrong. It's definitely an annoying dynamic when they are just coming after you over it. Anyone else have this?
  8. I'm asking the same letter writers. When they get to know me, then I'll have them write letters for me.
  9. I found NOVA's GRE book extremely detailed and infact well past what was needed for the GRE. If you find you are missing points you may have some gaps in your math knowledge.
  10. line in: center city, really any of it is fine, I live in the art house district and its a 5 minute walk to fitler square/rittenhouse area typical things to do: go to drinkers, tons of food, south street, museums, go to shows, schoolwork, not buy beer and wine together (oops) handling the weather: the weather isn't bad, but if you're from california... enjoy the winter music scene: one of the best on the east coast. you're close enough to see shows not only in Philly but NJ, MD, and NY. In Philly itself there are over 4 small venues with bands each and every night (national bands), then there's a large amphitheater type venue, Camden (<20 minutes) has an amphitheater as well, NY clearly has plenty and is close enough, MD has a good amount as well and its within 2 hours. Once a year there's Bamboozle right across in NJ which is a 3 day festival. The names of the philly venues specifically are The Electric Factory, TLA, Trocodor, Croc Rock, and the First Unitarian Church (I'm serious). Public Trans: We have a bus, a subway, and a trolly. The subway and trolly runs up and down the market street and branches out to suburbs. Busses are alittle better in terms of where they go (not up and down Market), but SEPTA's website blows, use google maps. I wouldn't quite call Philly "busy" on non-peak hours. The streets can be mostly empty at night in center city, and frequently we go to try bars and they're empty. However, the non-empty bars are packed.
  11. I'm not older than you are, but if it doesn't put you in an abysmal financial position and your current job makes you unhappy/doesn't pay much better than grad school go for it!
  12. Hello, Thanks for the response! I definitely feel more educated about the diversity of curry. I have had some goat curry in restaurants and something about the flavor of goat turns me off. Never had a duck curry. My goal would be to cook a chicken curry. The flavor I think I prefer the most is either the cumin or coriander. I am not experienced enough with it to say. Again, I am leaning towards needing a ton of spices to try to get a better approximation of the dish. I've watched a few videos that I will post below and their ingredients seem close to what I'd imagine would taste very curry-ish (in my definition). This guy seems the closest to what I imagine would work best: However, he does use water, but is the order the correct order? I could just sub out the water with yogurt to get it creamier? Or should I use the water and maybe just add yogurt near the end?
  13. I would but I don't feel my dishes are ready. Speaking of though, everyone has came through so far. Can anyone make a nice Indian Curry dish? I've been toying with one but I can't seem to get it. I know there's a bunch of types of curries, but I mean just a standard one that'd be listed as "curry" in a restaurant. I want a strong strong flavor from the spices and I can't seem to get that yet. I've seen some videos of Indian chefs adding tons and tons of spices and I read you should use more oil to do it this way. However, I also read the longer they cook the less their flavor. How do I balance this? My ideal is a thick curry, rich, slightly creamy, and has a STRONG STRONG taste. I want flavor to punch me in the mouth. Now I do not mean spice (the GF won't like that), but just the flavor. I normally cook an onion, chopped, till translucent with 2 tbsp of canola oil, then cook 2 cloves of garlic and 2 tbsp of ginger. I then throw in my "curry powder" which is my own mixing of 1 tbsp cumin and coriander, 1 teaspoon of tumeric, and a 1/4 teaspoon of both ground mustard and cayenne pepper. From here I notice the oil is soaked up by the spices and they cling to the onions and garlic/ginger. Then I add a smaller can of diced tomatoes and a 1/2 cup of yogurt. I bring that to a small boil (medium heat) and mix in a water and cornstarch mix to thicken it (3 tablespoons of each). Next comes 3 pinches of salt. I then add whatever ingredient is the main part of my curry, reduce to a simmer, cover and cook. What am I doing wrong? The curry flavor is there but it's just not strong enough! I want it to kick me in the face and I'm thinking 3x the oil and 2x the cumin/coriander may do it... any comments? The roasting of actual seeds is not an option because they don't carry them at my local market... Trying to work within my means here.
  14. aww i bet you look cute with your widdle backy pack on
  15. I wanted to clarify, in no way am I regular at any bars. I went to this said bar on 5 occasions my senior year of college, all on extremely busy nights. I understand they are told to serve girls first. As funny as it sounds, I was never a "repeat" customer in a night either so they couldn't even recognize me as the guy who doesn't tip. I only have 1 drink when I go out, and when I do need water, my girlfriend gets it... because she gets it quicker Now on the other hand, if I was constantly getting drinks and the bartender was attentive, I think it'd be fair to tip. Especially with a running tab. But for my one drink that costs 6-7 dollars... I normally do not. I would like to note this specific bar (and all bars in the are) had a $5 cover for everyone. So my one drink was costing me $11-12 dollars. Probably helps my bitterness.
  16. In NY, tipping is a much bigger deal than elsewhere. I personally do not tip if they're giving me a water (or a drink). I'm tipping them to pour something into a cup. That's ridiculous. I don't care what agreement they signed up for wage wise. I didn't force them to and I'm not going to tip them because the bar decided to give them a bad deal. Maybe because I'm a guy I want to tip even less. Half the time, I'll be waiting 5 or more minutes in a crowded bar for my first drink because girls are served first, even if they just showed up. I'm not going to tip someone who doesn't respect me enough to take me in turn. I'm sour about it. I don't have enough money to give to charity let alone a bar tender. I don't get tips for getting good grades or coding well.
  17. I tried it and it turned out great! I ended up using a super cheap chardonnay and it worked fine. The only sake around was 16 dollars a bottle... YEAH RIGHT. Thanks alot! I may set up a food blog (or maybe an everything blog) for pictures..
  18. In my undergrad, certain grad students in different programs (in science) were similar to undergrads as in, they thrived on drinking. In the sciences, every major meeting I've been to has served alcohol. Might not be your thing.
  19. Ironically I am in the US, but I'm in Pennsylvania, which has some of the strictest Alcohol laws I've seen on the East Coast. No alcohol (even cooking wines) in grocery stores. Beer cannot be sold in the same store as liquor and wine. So there's beer stores and then there's "wine and spirits." It's annoying.
  20. I am hoping to try this recipe tomorrow. First off, is any Saki okay? I live in an area where it seems hard to come by. Also, how much wine is used?? I may end up having to use a cream sherry since the alcohol here is strangely limited.
  21. I watch(ed): Dexter Mad Men Game of Thrones Lost Tudors Californication Hung Jersey Shore I want to watch Breaking bad, but it's a super long wait on netflix
  22. I appreciate both of your assistance. I think I may try natural peanut butter because my JIF was not cutting it. I doubt Thailand has Skippy anyway... maybe they do.
