Your threshold for considering something "top" is remarkably low. Not a single active NAE member, not a single ISI highly cited. Who are you referring to that makes OSU "top"? OSU is not even in the radar for top applicants the way UCSB is. So it's not even in the game while plenty of talented opto guys go with UCSB over big names. Without even having a sizable number of cross-admits, it's silly to compare. Like I said, top 30 is not bad in the bigger picture, but your perception of the school is simple self-delusion. I'll let you wallow in it.

That was a direct ranking comparison, useful because MIT is typically ranked #1. Not "UCSB's X is so good that MIT uses it". Sigh. Does OSU not require English proficiency?

Haha! So if UCSB is above MIT in some subfield, how are claiming attending Harvard or Ohio State as half-insult???
FYI Ohio State sits on TOP in my area. Just as an indication, recently the researchers there designed MIT's Lincoln Lab new campact range. Among all the so-called prestige schools only UMich can claim tries at the top spot in this field. Now while the OP doesn't seem to be aware of this but I wouldn't be surprised if Harvard's overally low-ranked engineering, while very small, be strong in one nerdy research topic and you actually insulted yourself with your paradoxically condescending statement.

You shouldn't base whether you are good enough or not on a cursory look at your profile from a graduate admissions committee. Succeeding in a research environment is a lot different than succeeding academically, and you may end up a much better researcher than people who hit the trifecta. I was a lazy undergrad so I knew I was a longshot for any of those three programs, but in my M.S. program I've realized that the graduate school lifestyle suits me spectacularly. I'm certain I would do well in any program, although I'm not likely to get the opportunity to do so at one of those schools.

This is a tough choice... I'm in analog circuits too and I'd hate to make this decision.

I think for me it would come down to which of the faculty had the most interesting research to me. I'd agree UCLA has a slight leg up reputation wise in analog circuits, but both are very strong programs and I don't really think there is a significant difference in reputation.

If you're going to be working with Razavi, I'd go to UCLA.

was1984 reacted to anotherflunky in Funding for MS Stanford Students
My question is if Stanford isn't just using the MS students for money, why not fund them? What was that endowment again? 15 billion?

Who says they can double the number easily? The school has a limited number of professors, number of courses, number of housing units, etc. I'm guessing they're milking what they can reasonably get already. Besides, civil engineering admissions are relatively easier compared to other engineering fields. So it's more so that civil departments in general are easy to get into, rather than that Stanford alone being that way. This is a straightforward consequence of the marginal value of higher degrees in some fields vs. others. This is not the case in, say, EE or CS, where giant hordes of MS students get in and they're not even top 10 caliber, let alone Stanford caliber. It is what it is. I'm not complaining. The departments' wealth makes it better for those few that do become funded PhD students. It's just funny to see all these similar topics on Stanford engineering every year. Hope, delusion, worrying, all rolled up.

Hey, I like Stanford too. I'll be going there (probably). But a more correct version is that Stanford chooses a *large* number of students, and this necessarily goes deeper into the lower-end of the academic totem pole. And even lower because they lose a lot of the best students to MIT, Berkeley, and even others which have better environments (thanks to not weeding students out or forcing them to pay). Graduate school is not meant to cost anything. Don't toe the Stanford party line just because you want to make yourself feel better.

Surely there is no free lunch: Stanford knows exactly what they have in order to offer to students. If unfunded MS is no good, it will eventually show up and affect the department's reputation. The department have thought of that, or have not realized that? I dont know. Maybe you know that.

was1984 reacted to enf22 in Washington, DC and Maryland suburbs
Hello! I have just decided to make the move from Miami, FL to Washington, D.C. I'm very excited but know that cost of living is very expensive in D.C. (and higher than in Miami). I've looked through the forum but can't seem to find a place where the talk is specifically about D.C. So I have a few questions for anyone who is able to answer them:

    (1) Where are some good (and safe) places to live? I've heard good things about Dupont and Adams Morgan. What should I expect to pay in these areas?
    (2) Is it recommended to not have a car in this area?
    (3) How good/bad is public transportation?

Thanks in advance for any advice :-)

Or, just buy very inexpensive locks so they're easy to replace should TSA happen to break them! How much do these special "TSA" locks cost? And if they have a master key, how long do we think it will be before less scrupulous people get copies of said master key?

Eh. I think people make too much out of it. I've never experienced any such problems on any of my flights.

Just like crime, however, it's also very easy to take a few very unpleasant stories and generalize them into normality. And far more people will take the time to write/talk about the unpleasant experiences they have had than the times where it was easy, quick, etc.

PC with Linux (Ubuntu/Debian): Very efficient at resource allocation and memory performance, pretty looking, OpenSource (free AND legal), and PC's are generally cheaper than MAC's so you get the best bang for your buck (you can go the MAC + Linux route but it's just more expensive). Good luck!

It's kind of hard to answer this question for you, since I don't have any idea what your life goals are.

Tech is definitely a good school for wireless comms, and that part of Virginia is absolutely beautiful. You might learn to love it. Plus, living in a smaller town for your Ph.D. program means fewer distractions.

The MSEE is a cash cow for Stanford. I doubt very seriously you will receive any funding as an M.S. student.

I'm wondering if any of the "speed reading" programs out there are worth it for graduate students? Anyone have any experience with speed reading? If so, which programs did you benefit from or which ones were a waste of time?

was1984 reacted to Jane Smith in Speed Reading Programs
I teach speed reading in many UK universities - to post graduates, academic staff and support staff - with really good results. Than answer is that speed reading techniques do help graduate students - you can learn how to do it on a course or from a book but to make the skills stick you have to practice. Speed reading is really about learning a number of effective reading habits - and working to eliminate old habits that are not useful. And learning new habits is not necessarily a quick and easy thing to do! I have produced a neat audio course called 'Speed Reading for Success' which tells you exactly how to go about learning. Feedback from users is really good - you can find out more on our website www.word-smiths.co.uk. The download version is not expensive. Email me at jane@word-smiths.co.uk if you have any problems once you start to learn. Good luck with this!

Keep in mind that there is a huge difference between collective bargaining for public sector jobs and private sector jobs. In the public sector, there is little fiscal accountability, so generally collective bargaining is much more powerful than in the private sector. Without pressure from stockholders the government has little reason to resist it. Collective bargaining in the public sector is a significant cause of government waste. Keep that in mind.

It's been a few years, but I'm guessing it hasn't changed much. I'd suggest looking for housing around Far West Blvd (there is a UT shuttle there). Housing in that area is relatively inexpensive and it's not a bad bus ride. I would avoid -at all costs- any housing near Riverside Drive. That's where a lot of undergraduates live, and most of the complexes are terribly managed and very noisy. The area is also one of the most sketchy in Austin (although, tbh, Austin is pretty safe).

Also, keep in mind that as a student there is a city bus pass included in your tuition and fees, so you can use these bus routes as well.
