was1984 reacted to asd123 in calculation of distance using Kullback–Leibler divergence
    Hi,

Basically I'm from biology back ground. So it may be a basic question for you. I have two plots for example
    plot1:

    X - axis values:
    535.255111, 536.258228, 537.26097, 538.26361, 539.266194, 540.268735

    Y-axis values:
    0.7, 0.23474151, 1, 0.00980891, 0.00116291, 0.0001162

    Plot 2:

    X - axis values:
    535.255111, 536.258228, 537.26097, 538.26361, 539.266194, 540.268735

    Y-axis values:
    1, 0.33474151, 0.06663174, 0.00980891, 0.00116291, 0.0001162

    [/HTML]

Now I need to design a scoring function which should be symmetric and also 2D (score should be based on x - axis and also on y- axis values) which results in displaying how good these two plots fit.

I thought of using Kullback–Leibler divergence for Gaussian.

Here what I intended to do is to draw a gaussian curve for each point (1st value of plot 1 and 1st value of plot 2) individually in the two plots and calculate their over lap, and finally sum all the overlaps which we get from each point in the plots.

If the overlap is perfect on x- axis and also on y - axis then fit should be 1 or 100% and as there if there is some changes in x- axis or y- axis then the fit should be less than that. If the y -axis values are same and there is a significant change in the x- axis then the score should be near to "zero" as the overlap will be much less.

I hope I'm clear in presenting the Idea. It would be helpful if anyone provide me the implementation of the formula according to the problem as I'm dumbo in maths.

    Thanks in advance

Ditto. To hell with you bankrupt good for nothing Berkeley, and your stuck up loser faculty who make less than a blue collar (check their salaries online, it's public info), and your four-eyed retarded students who could never be in a relationship if it wasn't for online (losers) dating websites, and your wretched puke-colored Cory hall (EECS), and your senile morons center aka LBL that is defeated by its Russian counterpart every year in pure science (check LBL science frauds online)......

I don't and will never want to be part of you!

Keep in mind that there is a huge difference between collective bargaining for public sector jobs and private sector jobs. In the public sector, there is little fiscal accountability, so generally collective bargaining is much more powerful than in the private sector. Without pressure from stockholders the government has little reason to resist it. Collective bargaining in the public sector is a significant cause of government waste. Keep that in mind.

jprufrock, dude just break up with your SO and find a new one in grad school. It's not worth the trouble or drama. You'll meet someone else in grad school, and it'll all be okay.

was1984 got a reaction from ZeChocMoose in Reply from a professor
Those of you who are offended by curt replies need to develop some thicker skin of you are going to be successful graduate students. Most faculty members are -extremely- busy people and they are dealing with a lot of these types of emails right now. If they sat down and wrote a well thought out reply to everyone that has emailed them wanting to work for them, that would probably be an entire day or more wasted on that process.

Plus, people who are emailing professors right now are indeed being a tad bit annoying. It's totally fine to email a professor to verify that they are a good research fit before applying to the school, but at this point you've already applied and if you are an appropriate fit your application will be reviewed. Emailing potential advisers right now is superfluous and irritating.

The number of lives saved or improved by science and engineering research vastly outnumber the lives taken. That said, liberal arts research is just as important as scientific research. Do we really want to be a society of ignorant techno-whizzes that have no concept of our own identity?

The answer is 2 of Swords. Swords symbolize knowledge, also there are changes to the better. So, I suppose, the answer is yes, congratulations. Waiting a respond from you. Write to us when you have result from the university.

Tarot Deck answers that you want to get positive answer from Boulder and will make some actions in order to follow your will, probably, next week. But after a month no positive answer should come.

Anyway, our future changes and if you really want, just do what you could do. But first, think about what you are currently waiting from your studying in Penn State? Would you be satisfied or not:) That is the our answer.

Also, provide some information about your application, i.e. the name of the university. Keep in mind, that we need not exactly the event from your biography, but an emotional contact with you during the prediction process.

Me and my friend (under Isabell nickname), who is a practicing magician, are currently exploring different approaches to get the application result, without having to wait for official correspondence. The Tarot deck seems to provide a slight advantage over other methods. However, to learn whether this advantage is statistically significant, we need more data collected from different subjects
So, If you would like to know whether miracle will happen and you'll finally get into your dream college - post your request here (one university per subject) Seven additional subjects are invited right now, so please be quick
Prediction is better when there is some kind of emotional contact, so please send us a private message describing (in a few sentences) the one emotionally rich event from your biography.
Results on your request will be obtained and posted in this topic in evening by US time (or kept private if you wish)
Please do not forget to inform us after you get an official decision, if our predictions were helpful!

I lived in Austin for about 6 years. The last two years have been a lot colder than usual. Typically it will get below freezing around 5 days a year, overnight. It's fairly common to have daytime highs in the mid 60's even midwinter. Occasionally it will even jump up into the 70s.

Winter is honestly the best time of year in Austin, because summers are pretty brutal. Expect 20 or so days above 100 degrees (sometimes well above 100 degrees) with high humidity. It's usually above 90 between early June and early September and it's rare that the high temperature is below that in that period.

Reading the result board posts (specifically for English) has officially become serial lobotomy. Does anyone think the next six years of any person's life should be reduced to an apostrophe? Is pernicious (not to mention banal) wit an appropriate response to the time, psychic energy, and financial expense required of the application process? It's troubling that PhD applicants can find no better use of their intellect than to impugn themselves, their prospective institutions, future careers, and presumed depth of understanding with so much bland brain matter. Sadly, no amount of good grammar can season it to taste.

This is a stressful time. Please remember, the eyes of more futures than your own look over those posts with alternating hope and pause. Own acceptance, rejection, and the creamy anxiety in between with a little class.
