This is my profile

I finished my BS in Civil Engineering 4 months ago in a Top University in Caracas, Venezuela. I graduated top of a 20 students class and my GPA is 17/20 (about 3.4)
I have no background or experience in the US education system. I just studied English for 6 months in LA after I graduated from Highschool.
I have been working in a my family Construction Company for about a year. I did my intership there.
I did a research thesis in order to obtain my BS, its subjects related to construction planning and control.
I have relatively good LOR, specially the professor I did my thesis with, but since they are professors that do not speak English fluently I am a little afraid they might not be perfect.
My GRE scores are: 740 - 800 MATH , 630 - 730 VERBAL

I plan to apply to a MS in Construction Management, Engineering and Project Management or Engineering Management in the following Universities:

1. Berkeley (CEE Department)
2. Stanford (CEE Department)
3. Columbia (CEE Department)
4. Illinois Urbana (CEE Department)
5. Cornell (Engineering Management Dept.)
6. Duke (Engineering Management Dept.)


Ok with this profile, I was wondering If I should be aiming to the top Engineering Universities as I mentioned, or should I lower my expectations?

Also If anyone have any experience of International students getting in successfully in those top Programs I appreciate your feedback....

I applied to 2 very different programs, but I really like both:

1. UIUC: Construction Management Program, ranked 3rd in Civil Engineering.
2. DUKE: Master in Engineering Management, ranked 20ish in Engineering, but the MEM program is associated with MIT, Stanford, Dartmouth and others. Also Duke is ranked better overall.

One important factor for me is the possibility of getting a job in the US after graduating, since I am an international student. With this in mind, what would you think matter most? overall ranking? field ranking? program associated with Ivy leagues?

Basically what I am asking is for an outside opinion, what would you do if you were me?

Change of plans, I was accepted in Stanford with lots of financial aid, so I accepted their offer....

I emailed them 3 days ago, today they responded on financial aid, 21.000 Fellowship!!!!

Ok I just applied to several top schools in MS in Construction and Engineering Management.

I now want to apply to a "more safer school" in case I dont get into the top programs, I am thinking on the following:
1. USC
2. Texas A&M
3.Georgia Tech
4. NC State

Which school do you think is the best and also a safer choice? Any suggestions?


My GRE scores are: verb 160/600 and quant 160/760

I have not find an application status page in the stanford application where I can check if the official scores have arrived yet.The same happen with the paper transcripts. In the status page they online have the recommendation letters.

How do you guys know that the scores were not reported? is there a way to check that from ETS?

What is an MPP?

I understand, I really didnt think it could damage the credibility of the recommender if I asked to see the LOR, I know he would make a great recommendation but I just wanted to know what he was putting on it, since he was the tutor of my thesis and I plan to mention the work I did with him on my SOP.

I just never thought this would be a problem and always thought I could even read them and even make suggestion before they sent it. Now that I know I wont even see them after they wrote them it is really stressing.... Do you know what might be the reason for this?
