  1. First acceptance in my inbox! Oh my, I am going to grad school!!!

  2. T - ~7 months from dissertation defense. Just need to find a postdoc position soon...

  3. Job offer accepted, now it's time to defend my dissertation and GTFO :D

  4. Submitting a manuscript to the journal (for the first time) is a "one-pretty-stressful" hour (or days, if you keep catching things needed to be fix / submit).

@Quantum Buckyball Molecular Cell for now. Haven't heard anything back, so I guess we passed the preliminary screen. haha

  7. Advisor wants me to presubmit for an invite-only, high impact review journal. Honored, but horribly nervous.

Congrats. I was in your shoe last year. It was a fun experience, featuring a 1 stressful month making good looking figures and writing a good draft.

  8. BEAUTIFUL day outside. I'm indoors grading. The struggle is real.

  9. My neighbors are loud to the point that I can't sleep even with headphones on and management won't do anything. I'm tempted to just call the cops because my passive aggressive notes and reports aren't doing anything.

  10. PI is trying to recruit me but it's for a program I am not interested in :/

did you apply to that program? and if you did, why did you apply to the program in the first place?

  11. The longer you are in grad school to do research, the more you shouldn't trust an undergrad to do your work. *sigh*

I guess the quality of undergrads are school and department related. Seniority, too. Freshman / sophomore seem to be more willingly to learn than, say, seniors.

Haha in my field, each individual typically has one or two projects that are independent, so you don't really work directly with/for a postdoc. Professor, on the other hand, were just looking for cheap labors to prove their hypothesis right/wrong, in my cynical opinion :P

  12. My school is SO unhelpful when it comes to taxes. They don't pull taxes from my fellowship automatically, and don't give W2s or 1098Ts. WTF

I'm pretty sure your school is required to send you your W-2 form by Jan 31 by law. You definitely need to talk to your financial office. For me, I got my 1098T online and W-2 online (W-2 used to mail to my local address).

And I got my money back in first week of February.

  13. Paper due at the end of the month, rough draft due at the end of the week (T-24). Vomiting a vomit draft.

Haha congratz! I'm finally done with my first year and start (actually) doing research, and heading to a national lab for a workshop!
