Look at it this way: if you were accepted at one, I'm willing to bet you were in the running at the other 9. You probably would've gotten a bunch of bronze medals and fourth place ribbons if they gave 'em out. Does that help?

I think what's key is that, in our pedagogy, we don't teach students the canon; we teach the students about the canon. Make that debate apparent.

*cue Pannapacker reading this, looking down his nose at you, and calling you naïve.*

The guy's articles obviously have nothing to do with benevolent advice anyway. It's just provocation meant to strike up people's interests and debates and get more copies of The Chronicle in front of people's faces. Plus, he teaches at Hope College, which is a total piece of shit conservative Christian college in Michigan. I know a lot of empty and soulless people who went there for accounting degrees*. I wouldn't be surprised if his motivations stem from dissatisfaction with the political culture of humanities these days.

    *wooowww I'm judgmental.

In this case I sense you just don't know very much about animal studies and posthumanism, especially considering that asleepawake has already acknowledged one of your primary critiques (of something you obviously know nothing about) and you read right through it. This is either cognitive dissonance or you are a troll.

Humanism is also people talking for other people (see like everything ever written by Spivak for instance -- the fucking double bind!). Does that invalidate humanism? Is humanism a flawed methodology? Are you a troll?

Edit: Everything is representation. Get over it.

TripWillis reacted to Redflight in Rankings: How Important Are They?
I have lurked this forum for over a year and have never posted or created an account once, but your last few responses have prompted me to opine my mind. You, lady, are one hell of a bitch and are acting like an immature brat. You will quickly learn not everyone on this planet will agree with you, and that is perfectly fine. So pull the dick out of your ass and quick acting like a baby. No one gives a fuck.

Now ban me. I don't care. Never posted here before anyway.

    Stupid brat

You should practice being more of a dick to people before you start your program this fall. Programs really like that sort of thing.

I just think some kind of aesthetic worth valuation system is a less interesting critical pursuit than what we could be doing, at least as a primary focus.

TripWillis reacted to ComeBackZinc in What counts as "Top 10" and "Top 20," etc.?
I think you're conflating a couple separate ideas, here.

    1. The notion of a particular program's relative prestige, exclusivity, and quality
    2. The ranking of those qualities into any ordinal list
    3. The particular rankings of the US News and World Report list

The first matters a great deal on the job market. It isn't the only thing that matters, and people can and do overcome a lower ranking to get hired, but it matters a lot for getting hired. However, the fact that number one matters does not mean that number 2 is necessarily possible, and certainly does not mean that number 3 is accurate. Many people who believe that prestige is important don't think that US News and World Report has anything more than a crude idea of the relative prestige of different programs. Some of the rankings on that list seem so out of date as to be farcical. In any event: hiring committees will be made up of tenured professors who have their own ideas about which programs are the most prestigious (or highest quality or whatever.)

I'm teaching two classes this year with two different preps, which is a major time-suck, but I get to teach literature for the first time, which is exciting. I scored a peer-reviewed article pub in the offseason and I have another under review. Turning in a book review today. Trying to stay as busy as I can on the publishing front.

I'm tired, but in a really good way. My lingering doubts only come when my bank account is empty.

It's good to see all you guys again.

To give a more thorough answer than my earlier one, I've been having an interesting summer. I tried to find a steady job to slam away some money, but failed miserably. So, I've been turning my thesis into an article and I'm in the final editing stages before submission. Not too many more global revisions, just fixing odds and ends. I've been trudging through a long summer reading list, which has been great -- been a while since I've had a chance to do so much self-directed reading. I've been tutoring creative writing to a kid, tutoring college students, tutoring a fifth grader... basically lots and lots of tutoring. I'm presenting at a conference in September on what I just found out is a VERY intimidating panel of scholars (I'll just say that none of them are first year grad students and one of them is a kind of famous academic). I've also had very little money, so I've been kind of a shut-in.

Not much in my non-scholarly life is changing, since the school I'm going to is about a 40 minute subway commute from my apartment (hooray!) and I know that makes my boyfriend really happy. I definitely understand what a lot of you are probably dealing with in that regard. Three years ago I followed my boyfriend to NYC while he was getting his MSW and the adjustment was not easy for either of us, but we figured it out. When I was going through my options (Buffalo, Amherst, New Brunswick, and here), I know he was getting pretty nervous that I'd move somewhere else, even though none of the places I'd move were so so terribly far away (except Buffalo, which, in the words of Louis C.K., "sucks shit"). We got really lucky that CUNY ended up being the best fit for me in the end.

I'm incredibly excited to get started. GRR! Still one more month! I'm having so much trouble narrowing my classes for the fall down to three. So many of them look so amazing. The faculty and my student adviser have all been incredibly welcoming and nice and there are a number of orientation and mixer events at the beginning of the semester. CUNY is doing a really great job of making sure we form a community. I've even had professors reaching out personally to welcome me and invite me to take their courses based on my interests. But, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous, mostly about what I assume will be a pretty insane reading/workload (but I know I'll handle it, I just know I'm going to be tested early) and also about my fellowship, which is good, but on the low side for NYC cost of living. I'm up for two supplemental fellowships which I've had radio silence on, but I supposedly shouldn't hear about until Aug/Sept anyway. If I get either of them, it will make things way way way way easier for me. If not... well... I could look into freeganism. I've convinced myself that continuing to tutor this fall and spring would be a really dumb move and that I should just bite the bullet, but I don't know. I guess I'll see how poor I am and whether I can deal with it.

<--------- sunglasses to hide geeky excitement to read books, nervousness over my impending Ph.D.-er lifestyle, and anticipation for the start of 5-7 years of scholastic immersion. Whew. Here we go *takes deep breath/holds nose*.

Just found out I'm 2nd on the waitlist and it doesn't look so great for me. The word "unlikely" was used in my latest email update...

Wow. Two people away from the dream program. What a shame.

All the accepted people in the Columbia thread are giving me three feelings:

    1) Hopefulness -- it is totally possible to get into an Ivy.
    2) The strong desire to get into Harvard or Yale this week. REALLY strong desire. It's irrational, I know. Ivy League never tells the whole story or determines quality definitively. I think it's the fact that I come from such a poor family and went to such lowly state schools. I just want it to happen really badly.
    3) Happiness for gradcafe people who make it.

We're still here, Rose Egypt.  I'm usually just casually checking the boards without logging in, but maybe I should try to wean myself from Grad Cafe entirely for a while?  It really kills productivity, and now that I've actually made it into a Ph.D. program, I have less of an excuse to spend hours upon hours on these forums.

I do want to return in late fall to answer questions and offer advice about my program specifically, though.  I'll be back, folks!
