Maybe their fellowship package comes with a time machine to the early 1980s.

If it makes you feel any better, I got into their Ph.D. last year and was offered no funding. That's an even harsher blow. "Oh, sure, I'll go to your program for 5-7 years with no funding. I'll also blowdry my hair in the bathtub to save time! What could go wrong?"

"I'm sure they'll make you proud when their blog about animal studies and queer performativity reaches a thousand pageviews."

Bitterness is an ugly thing. I'm sure the poster's general lack of humility, the competitiveness of the program, and his not getting in are some kind of correlated.

Edit: Also, spouting Butler and Foucault, animal studies, and queer performativity? Wow, this person just described the general thrust of my work.

Looks like NYU finally sent out rejections.  But goddamn, the "Butler-and-Foucault-spouting dipshits" post was lame.  There's nothing more pathetic than a self-loathing humanities student.

I disagree about the whole "follow the money" advice: if you are choosing between two funded programs, go where it feels right.  You are going to be living and working in this place for 5-7 years with no guarantee of a job on the other end -- live somewhere that you won't regret spending your twenties or thirties.

As for the money at UT, it's fine.  We don't live extravagantly, but there are very few complaints about the money or lifestyle.  I turned down a better funded -- and perhaps more prestigious (in my subfield) -- offer because I felt this was right.  I immediately connected with my future advisors and the DGS on the visit.  If any of you have specific questions about the money, you might get five or six different perspectives with some carefully directed GC personal messages.

This is exactly my train of thought; I feel that if someone can get into Rutgers, with how competitive it is, there is a good chance that at least some of them are also getting offers from Columbia, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, etc. The question seems to be simply numbers; how far up the waitlist am I? Will any af-am people decline? The guy said "close to the top." He also said he'd be calling throughout the month to keep me informed. I mean... that all sounds... promising. At the same time, I really don't want to get my hopes up.

I disagree. I think honest dialogue is good. But, I've had plenty of rigorous debates on here without bomb throwing. I also don't get how Don't Hate's posts were "honest" when they seemed more like naked provocation. The only thing intense about her presence was that she was acting, under circumstances of anonymity, the way that no one would act in real life if they wanted to have collegial relationships with people.

Hey FishBucket, I wanted to let you know that I have been reading Bruce Fink's Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis, and I am pretty sure you fall under "hysteric."

I don't like everyone. But I tend to simply avoid the people I dislike.

If they seek me out (as girl who wears glasses did repeatedly over private messages) then I try my best to honestly and bluntly turn them aside. But sometimes that doesn't work. She sent me a message asking me to stop downvoting her posts. I'm only making this public because recently she's referred to our private conversation as me "spewing hatespeech" and I'm really sick of this weird slander. I would post all the messages on here, but they're from my other account which is now closed.

Comp lit and English are pretty distinct departments at my school. And I'm done with coursework soon.

Edit: I'm actually not sure I've met a single person from comp lit. For better or for worse. Still, if she's to be believed, we'll get along no problem in real life. She gets along with everyone!
