Grunty DaGnome reacted to objectivityofcontradiction in PhD Humanities - Just Don't Do It!
Am I the only one who has stopped and questioned the idea that an associate professor of English at some liberal arts college has the nerve to publish articles under a pen name that strive to rid recent undergrads of their passion for a subject, of their goal to write, research and devout themselves to a area of humanities for the rest of their lives? Why should we listen to what this, Director of the Andrew W. Mellon foundation scholars foundation in arts and humanities has to say? I hope we are all sure enough of ourselves to take each word, each punctuation mark, with a massive heap of salt.

I just feel like humanities students are the most pathetic forms of people. Humanities are easy and pointless and that's why the field is so flooded. Sciences (such as physics) are what really impacts the world and changes things and helps people. What do humanities really do?

The students are pathetic too. They are miserable because they tried to do what they loved but society hated it. Society hates them because they are just writers and 99.9% of writers are pathetic too. Even the Simpsons hates grad students. Those poor grad students, they can't even watch the simpsons to escape their woe!

Idk, I loved humanities and thought they were great but now I realized that I was wrong to enjoy them and that writing, and humanities are bad, their practitioners are pathetic and that sciences are the only way, even if you don't enjoy them, because they are the only way to actually do things.

    Maybe I'm just cynical.

Another fun hobby is collecting classics based only loosely on the novel. Demi Moore's Scarlet Letter is a great one.

I know. This is the only downside at CUNY. Keeping it going for 5-6 years or 7 or 8 is an exhausting prospect. It's the only think keeping CUNY from being my #1 choice. Exhausting as the proposition of a working PhD would be, I'm sure whomever manages to finish their PhDs are like full service combat PhDs.

    I still haven't been rejected...

    WHY?!

    Dear Columbia:

It has been brought to our attention that you have notified some applicants to your program of their rejection while simultaneously leaving others without any update of their standing. . Not only is this behavior offensive, it is also unacceptable. Your actions produce a false sense of hope, and in some rare cases, may cause stomach pains, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, heart-burn, anxiety, cervical cancer, athlete's foot, hair loss, and involuntary spasms of the back, neck, leg, and eyelid. Your actions are unacceptable, and my colleagues and I have no option but to find you guilty of attempted manslaughter in the second degree.

Your punishment may be mitigated under the following circumstances: you accept me/us into your program, your offer your reply promptly, and/or you agree to hire me/us as tenure-track professors in 5-6 years.

Thank you for your time. We expect your duly response immediately. Further procrastination may be deteriorative to your already precarious position.

    Sincerely,
gradcafe users and Columbia applicants, under the auspices of one Stately Plump

I didn't apply to Harvard, but I have a feeling the post was a hoax. Somehow it strikes me as too nonchalant to be real. I would've gone to town on the comments section!

For what it's worth, I'll be sending you good vibes for the next 12 (or 13) months. I have a few close friends who adopted the strategy of "just gonna keep applying until they get sick of me and let me in" - and it worked (well, I'm not quite sure if it worked, but they ended up getting in. One of them ended up going to Harvard.) This whole thing is a crap shoot - don't let it get you down.

Well, I've always been a pretty working-class fella, so living low on the food chain ain't a problem for me. But the difference between a guaranteed 2/2 courseload over 5 years and a spotty adjunct/internship whatever thing is pretty big to me. It seems historically like they send out ECFs over the course of a few weeks, so I definitely am not in despair. I'm just frustrated I haven't heard anything.

If you decide that you want to go to CUNY (because it such an awesome program), let me know if you need advice about living in NYC, finding an apartment, etc. I've been here about 2.5 years now and I've been living in the Northeast for almost 10 years. I know my way around the city now.

If you decide to go to any of your awesome other acceptances, let CUNY know that you want your ECF to go directly to me.

Fair enough, my main concern is that (as a young female who is neither burly nor learned in martial arts) I would be forced to live in an unsafe area in order to accommodate the funding. Frustrating indeed, I can imagine. And thanks for that offer! I will most definitely take you up on it if I decide to go that way. At this point I think Vandy is taking the lead for me, but campus visits have to happen before I can make a solid decision. That, and I'm still waiting on my top two programs, or more honestly, my reach programs, before really getting down to the nitty gritty of choosing. Hopefully that notification happens soon, as I am pretty sure I am getting an ulcer.

Will do! "Dear Prof. Reid-Pharr. There's this guy I know from this chatroom about grad stuff and he would like my ECF please. Thanks! I really like your work! K Bye!" The End.
