By March 1, it's likely I will have heard from all my programs. I have to take a minute to realize how much time I could potentially waste between then and now worrying about what's now out of my hands.

It seems to me that if a University used existing capacity to teach continuing education classes for approx 400 bucks a semester, 100 or so adult enthusiasts could stay involved with literary studies and create one more grad or assistant faculty position.
Many large universities do this, but usually as an afterthought. They don't plan a strong curriculum for the non-professional/enthusiast, that might build on itself year after year.

    Hello Wings of Bone -

My name is Jessica Rooney, and I work in the Office of Admissions at Naropa University. We're happy that you are considering our MDiv program! If you are interested, we would love to connect you with current MDiv students, or recent MDiv alumni, so you can discuss the program with them. To set this up, please email me at admissions@naropa.edu.

In terms of numbers, our graduate programs have an average class size of 13, with a student/faculty ratio of 9:1. Many of our graduates go on to work within religious-based community service and ministry, including work within hospitals, hospices, prisons, and the armed forces. Other available career paths include work in the not-for-profit community-based sector and other nontraditional ministries such as social activism, poverty ministry, or community development.

Contemplative education at Naropa involves the combination of learned knowledge with awareness, insight, and compassion. The goal is to educate the whole self by integrating what you learn with how you live your life. Specifically, the MDiv program combines a Western-style History of Religions approach and a classic Tibetan Tradition approach to the study of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism in the first year of study. The History of Religions approach includes cultural, social, artistic, historical, phenomenological, and religious perspectives, combined with the presentation of the in-depth foundational material of a traditional educational system of a Tibetan monastic college (shedra). The result is a program that will leave you uniquely prepared to use your understanding of Buddhism and the hieghtened sense of clarity, insight, and warmth within a wide variety of postgraduate career directions.

Thank you again for your interest! As you continue your research into the program, I invite you to explore the links I've listed below. If you have any further questions, I'd be glad to help!

    Best,
    Jessica

I think you definitely win the prize for caring the most about grad school, if 36 weeks pregnant is having trouble competing.

WORD. The growing suspense is killing me, minute by minute. (I'm looking at you, USC American Studies & Ethnicity!)

TripWills, I've been meaning to ask you if you considered applying to USC. Your interests sound like they might be a good fit for the ASE program.

On the one hand, I feel the same. On the other, I wonder if some of those posts aren't true and are posted by trolls of this thread, just to make us crazy, especially the last one, claiming acceptance via email.

I was one of the acceptances posted, to the English program. It's my first acceptance (got rejected from Northwestern last week), with 15 more to go, but the first one is always the best. I've just kissed my computer screen with the email.

    A scene that just happened:

Me, sitting at the computer, hearing my phone ringing from across the room.

    "NYU!" I think.

I dart to it by the end of the first ring.

    The name/number listed: Unknown.

Pause, wait till the third ring.

    "Hello?"

    *Click*

    Silence.

    DAMNIT!

Most friends and family have no idea what it is like unless they are doing it. I have two friends that applied last year along with me and none of us got into any program. We all retook the GRE, gutted our writing samples, fancified (yes I said fancified) our CVs, and completely regeared our SOPs. I am lucky to have two friends doing this along with me because they 100% understand everything. Family/other friends...not so much. I remember last year begging my dad not to tell his friends and others that I applied to PhD programs, he couldn't help bragging because he knew I would get in everywhere I applied, but I was scared that I wouldn't get in. And I didn't. And no one could believe it. I really couldn't imagine going through this without a fellow applicant. Stick to the board. We understand.

"Oh, I 'm sure they'll just snap you up everywhere!" no help, there.

"But...you HAVE a job already. WHY are you going back to school?" (Because, of course, my crappy job in a stultifying industry is exactly where i want to be for the rest of my life.)

Or this gem, from my Mom: "Honey, you HAVE a degree. Just settle down, have some kids, and be happy with it."

    1. "You spent all day on your applications? You're still not finished?"

    2. "And what are you going to do when you're done?" (absolutely no one cares about what I'll do when I'm there)

    3. "But are there any things you could do with that in the world?" <--this person would not listen to me until I started talking about music therapy, which is luckily a genuine interest of mine, albeit still on the research side of things.

    4. "Oh, you got accepted to [unfunded master's at a name brand school]? WOW CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!" vs. "Oh, you got accepted to [a top-ranked doctoral program with full funding for five years but much less local name recognition]? That's nice!"

Wow, the most intersting thing about UCSB [where I did my undergrad] is how little money they give you and for how few years! Crazy! A beautiful campus though, but I don't know if I'd go back if it would plunge me into certain debt.

As for your interests, JeremiahParadise, I think Tufts is a great fit program for you. You might also check out BC. Chris Wilson is great for American Studies and many profs there do Queer theory.

Hear, hear. As someone going through this process for the first time, I think feedback would be incredibly helpful. I mean, what if I'm doing something completely wrong in my applications simply because I don't know better? Seriously, people, help a girl out.
