I got a super vague email from the program director (Brown BSHS) that said they were in the process of finalizing their list of offers with the Graduate School. They asked to keep in touch with questions about the program, so I asked about what the final approval process entailed. Turns out, the Corporation had met that week to give info about budgets and they were still expecting to hear about financial details that would allow the committee to make final decisions. I got my "official" you are recommended for admission email this morning! Personally, I don't know if I would have preferred to just get the last email that spelled out the good news for me or to have that additional/vague update email...

I just received an interview invite from Columbia (PhD Epi). Shocked and nervous. Still waiting to hear back from CUNY.

Yes! I second this. I withdrew my application for consideration at a school after interviewing because the cultural fit was non-existent. I did so respectfully and politely and they seemed to appreciate my saving them the time and freeing up a spot (they also asked for feedback, which was much appreciated!). If I had known it wasn’t a good fit, I would have declined moving forward in the process, for sure.

Hey sorry longtime lurker, I noticed that as well.
I believe the user that was upset about the troll human/moderator situation was also the one that had started the PhD 2020 thread. When that user had their account deleted, it must have deleted that whole thread?

Hey everyone, I found out that I got into the Harvard PHS program in epidemiology last week. All my good thoughts and prayers for everyone to get into the programs of their dreams. This was not my first time at the rodeo, so I know how hard it is. ❤️

I was accepted into UC Berkeley's Environmental Health Sciences EHS program last night.
Still haven't heard anything from most of the other schools I applied to (all EHS programs), but it feels great to finally have confirmation that I will be a PhD student next Fall at a school with a great research fit.

Just want to give you EVEN MORE kudos for this post- I'm in substance use/HIV for 10+ years and have had a rough go of it in terms of PhD cycles. This year has been my "lets find a school that won't dramatically alter my life" cycle and next year I guess will be a much different approach. Thanks for this again.

Thank you SO much for this post and for your positivity! And for all the accomplishments that you have achieved and will achieve! One thing I absolutely love working in this field is that I am surrounded by inspiring and committed individuals. I believe eventually we will be in a place where we truly belong to. Yes, de-stigmatize rejection!
As our research interests overlaps a bit (Implementation Science), one thing I learned from this application cycle is that different programs/groups might really mean different things even using the same term, as the field isn't really well-established yet (or to some people it has been there for a long time, just with a different name). I actually had a lot of reflections on this. But, we need more implementation science researchers !!!

Wow wow wow!! I have to say a huge thank you to everything you've contributed to the field (and the world!) so far in your career. You're a rock star and going to continue doing great things. ? Also - shoutout from another MCH researcher later in her career considering having a kid during PhD apps/school!! I did AmeriCorps but still feel a bit of camaraderie with you there too. You rock! ?

Just got my rejection from Brown's HSR program. This was expected as I wasn't interviewed. 3/4 rejections so far. The 4th will come soon, as I haven't been interviewed there. I'm going to need to regroup and re-strategize for next year's cycle.
I've been working in maternal and child health space for 12 years, am a returned Peace Corps Volunteer, I graduated with my MPH from Johns Hopkins where I won an award for my capstone research project. I worked on monitoring and evaluation of global maternal and child health programs for a few years post-MPH, and for the last three years I've been working as a researcher at a Harvard SPH lab. I have first authored 2 papers, second-authored 3 papers, and am a middle author in some others. I did not submit my GREs unless required. I'm interested in the intersection of MCH quality of care and implementation science. My recommenders are well-known in the field.
I'm writing all of this to contribute to the ongoing conversation on this forum to de-stigmatize rejection. I'm trying to view this as an opportunity rather than a failure. I only applied to schools that were geographically close this year due to covid, so next year I'll get to expand my search a bit more. Hopefully that will make it easier to find a better match.  I'm using this year to regroup, gain more experience, and to identify programs that might be a better fit. (And maybe try for a kid pre-PhD!).
This has been a great forum! It's good to know that there are so many up-and-coming, qualified, passionate public health researchers. We need it! Good luck to you all!

Yes we are competing with other applicants in terms of there is a review committee or a group of faculty reviewing our applications and pick the ones to interview/accept. No I don't view other applicants as my competitors because of our unique paths.
For example, as an asian, I would fight for the rights of under representative minorities, although that means it might work against me, against my personal interests, and some one might take the position that I wanted. But this is what I truly believe in and the science community for sure needs more diverse opinions. This is bigger than me. I truly wish everyone a successful career, in regardless of the application results, because we can success together, in regardless of me getting into Harvard or not. Not getting into any PhD programs does not make me a loser.

Also, as an international student, I SO appreciate posts sharing background, info., and results, because it helps other applicants dramatically. When I applied to schools in the U.S., other than U.S. News ranking, I had no other references, no other source of information other than these online forums. None of my professor could provide any advice in terms of picking schools and application tips. This goes the same to many other applicants in the U.S. as well.

I just want to say folks: it seems like we applied to public health PhD programs in the worst year to apply in a long time. That said, if you haven't/don't receive acceptances this year, this is not an accurate reflection of you or your application - it's an accurate reflection of how shitty this year was to apply. And if you've only received 1 acceptance, you should be so fucking proud of yourself. Take care everyone.

Definitely, don't delay having kids, if you feel ready! There's this quote that I LOVE from Henry Rollins that I think is so applicable:
"No such thing as spare time
No such thing as free time
No such thing as down time
    All you got is lifetime
    Go"

As someone who was notorious for "When I do X, then I can focus on Y," this quote has always resonated. So definitely don't put off life for grad school because there's no such thing. You're living.

For example, I am good at taking tests and standardized scores, so I am not at a disadvantage on this aspect. Removing the GRE requirement for application takes me into a disadvantage because I am good at it. But I support this from an equity standpoint of view and especially when research shows that GRE is not a good indicator for graduate school success. There might be different reasons for a program not having many URMs, it could be their evaluation metrics put people into disadvantage, but it could also be that although they have made efforts, ppl don't feel that they fit in and choose not to apply. And I am interested in hearing from admin and faculty about their opinions on this matter, in terms of what efforts they have made to recruit these folks. And I do plan to be part of the efforts during my phd education and beyond, if there are opportunities to do so.
I applied because there are faculty members that align with my research interests, and also for funding concerns (public schools don't have good funding mechanisms for international students as we are not eligible for government training grants). But there are so much more beyond research interests that I also care about.
The only program that I interviewed so far completely removed GRE from application consideration and covered all the mentioning of GRE in the package before sending for reviews. If I get a spot, I get a spot, if not, I will try next year.
