  1. "This is great news and I look forward to hearing from you and the other students."
  2. Only thing funnier than the rejection responses are the folks arm-chair analyzing the individuals behind them.
  3. Like 99% of that isn't in any way academic, or would have any impact on a healthy personal image in the department. "Drinks and dancing. . ." Honestly? Will there be a generational gap - maybe. If you are dead set on being "friends" with the young people in the department, including doing the social stuff outside of campus a 30-something shouldn't have that much of a problem if they REALLY want that. Social interests aren't going to completely align, but theres nothing stopping folks born in different decades from having a beer or being invited over for dinner. Hard partying and at a housewarming on a school night. . .maybe not.
  4. MPH in Health Policy & Management? With an obvious emphasis on Management.
  5. #1 Tip: Stop thinking about age. No one is going to look at you and think "Look at this old f***. . ." You got in, same as them. If you don't make age an issue, they (the proverbial they) aren't likely to either.
  6. If you notice no one showing up for these sessions, send an email out to students asking them to email you letting you know if they intend to show up for this "tutorial hour". I'm all for the "let's be responsible" bit, but who has office hours that early? A class? Sure. An office hour? Please. Negotiating something beneficial to all can't hurt.
  7. Not the end of the world folks. There are numerous other awards out there and if anything (whether you agree with them or not) the review comments can only help you going forward.
  8. Someone's never known anyone in an Asian family.
  9. There are no "rules". There's simply a gaggle of schools that have signed a general promise to not require decisions before a certain deadline. However what is the punishment for a department not adhering to it - not much.
  10. April 15th is a magical number that is agreed upon by a lot of school, but is by no means binding. At best - if you REALLY need that much time to decide - you can contact the school and let them know what is what.
  11. With money. With that out of the way, get a roommate, embrace public transportation, learn how to cook for yourself, and buy used if you need anything. As for eating Ramen Noodles and canned tuna. . .no thanks. Getting GOOD nutrition is an important part of making sure you don't crash and burn. I eat Ramen Noodles when I'm feeling lazy and want a snack, never as a long term option.
  12. 60% seems ridiculously capricious and the kind of thing up their own asses instructors like to do because they can. I believe in getting the grade you earned. If a Prof wants to curve down that's fine too. Never should one students performance be pegged NEGATIVELY to another's though.
  13. Wake up. Become invigorated by the joy of being alive. Profit.
  14. I've never had a problem in over a decade of using IBM/Lenovo warranty service. A 200 dollar warranty service versus having to outsource the problem (with no garauntee that it'll be fixed) - no thanks. As for your machine being a hunk of junk in a few years - bah. I think people toss this "obsolete" word around with a bit too much abandon. "No longer best in class for [insert task]" might be the better phrase to use. My Thinkpad R61 can still do the marginal stuff my T430s is currently doing. It just does it a bit slower (depending on what you are using it for). As for aesthetic issues, no one is ever going to call the Thinkpad series "bold. . ." in design (except for the Carbon). These are business class laptops however - Lenovo makes a line for individuals who are "design concious. . ." However, compared to Samsung or Apple - Lenovo isn't going to win any awards from the undegrad set. If you care about a solid, well built affordable machine - it's really hard to get wrong with the T series.

    Unfunded PhD?

I'm not sure how "uncommon" it is: I got an offer as did more than a few others in my incoming class. I would say individually it might be uncommon (in terms of unfunded to funded), but whether or not one gets one I'd say it's not so difficult to find a person who has been offered. As to whether it is worth it - no way. Going into debt for a masters isn't too difficult to swallow since you're getting in and getting out fairly quickly. PhD. Yikes.
  16. I'd be more insulted this his idea of foreplay and romance is to file some funking folders. The shit. . .?
  17. This isn't really all that difficult of a situation. . .due to the error of the university, your GPA wasn't calculated correctly (or had a delay in processing for whatever reason) - now it is. You can complain, but what are they going to do: "Sorry we didn't do our job years ago. . .sure we'll give you back the incorrect GPA which doesn't reflect your academic work." At the end of the day, if you really feel a Summa Cum Laude notation on your transcripts is going to be the difference maker in your future, push the issue (which again, isn't really an issue that could/should result in you getting the honors).
  18. I'd prefer a warranty over self insuring (through State Farm or something) any day of the week. A personal insurance policy is unlikely to cover routine repairs (that for whatever reason you can't do yourself) or cosmetic issues. My warranty has. Never mind that what the policy will cover is probably going to be prohibitively limited to be of use beyond "Laptop exploded spontaneously. . ." or some such. Yes, it's likely to cost far less and you can cover yourself in terms of theft, but you get what you pay for. Also, I'd never get a machine that was tied to internet access. That is obviously why these machines are so cheap, but the hassle of having a paper due, and not being able to access it - yuck (of course you could get an external, but then you are starting to veer into price-territory of a standard lappy).
  19. . . .specifically a T430s from the Lenovo Outlet (returns and refurbished models).
  20. Any carrier that allows you to bring in your own phone. I have TMobile (30 bucks for 100 minutes, unlimited text and 5GB of data - far more than you will ever need), but there may be a carrier in your area that "rents" space off ATT/Verizon towers that offers competitive data/talk plans.
  21. Bringing over an unlocked ATT, VERIZON etc. phone to Metro is currently limited to a few select cities. If you happen to live in one of the seven - I would say go with Metro if TMobile doesn't have service in your area. My suggestion, grab a Nexus 4 (from Google) and go with their 40 dollar plan.
  22. That's. . .not really true at all. And then you go into why it's not quite true. Ultrabooks (like Netbooks) focus on portability first and foremost, and are targetted to a specific type of user. If someone needs a desktop replacement (as was mentioned in this thread) an Ultrabook is NOT going to be what they go for. They may be "all laptops. . ." (or all computers) but there is enough differentiation to know how to parse the difference between a request for an Ultrabook and for a Laptop.
