ANDS! got a reaction from Two Espressos in Going for PhD/homophobia in grad school
I'm sorry but that is a load of bullsh*t. Not your demographics - one need only stumble into a computer lab random times during the day to confirm this - but the incredibly faulty connection that "Hey it's full of all dudes. . .definitely has the undercurrent of sexism in it!" - relative or otherwise. This is still academia; unless the OP is going to school in Iran or something gender/racial biases are pretty non-existent.

Jesus. And you're in Social Psychology too. God help us -

As for "insisting" on the department - I was simply curious if the OP would bite. They didn't. Coupled with the previous info, I'm simply leaning more towards "less insidious than a normal person would think - " in terms of the tenor of the conversation the OP heard.

Does Apple now make anything OTHER than the Pro?  I don't think so.  So yes, it is legitimate to "whine. . ." about the price point of Apples full featured laptop.  The Air is certainly priced better (at least the model with the tiny screen), but it still tips the scales at 1000 bucks.  All in my T430s was about 200 bucks less (and still managing to feel lighter than an older ultrabook I had) and certainly much cheaper than the comparable (in terms of specs) Macbook Pro.     So yea.  Apple products are a barrier to entry.  This is not a new thing, and I can imagine complaints about it get tiresome - but pretending it's not a legitimate complaint is a bit silly.

Well then by all means, craft personalized emails for these instructors you have had these substantive conversations with who I am quite sure will remember you in 5 or 10 years.

Point in fact, the majority of gun owners are responsible gun owners. It is the individual with no ideas who responds in a knee-jerk manner with the idea that "Gun control, gun control, gun control!" is the solution here.

Count me as one of the MANY that has never had a problem with a Thinkpad.  If your issue is software related there is a cure for that - reformatting the damn thing the minute you get it.  Certainly what I have done on my (MANY) purchases of Lenovo.  Though I suspect the people whining about "bloatware" or such have older machines.  They have stepped it up in terms of delivering content that people actually need.  I am currently sitting on a 430s - light, excellent workhouse, best keyboard bar none - all for a great price.  And for what it's worth, no one who has been invested in Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpads since the 90's would consider the Edge a Thinkpad machine.   In any case, no laptop manufacturer is perfect; however there is a reason Lenovo is still seen as the "professionals" laptop provider.  A Series 9?  C'mon now.

ANDS! got a reaction from kewz in Is Ivy League Grad as Prestigious as Ivy League Undergrad?
This is a pretty silly dismisal to make. The Ivy League schools (and their counterparts in the UK) are considered "super brands" in terms of their research/output. Not all Ivies are created equal, nor are they all represented in all disciplines. However it is a safe bet that should a person go to an Ivy, then the quality of their education will be pretty well known which translates to future professional success.

And I am laughing at the people ass hurt over the OP's concern; as if brand recognition is something that isn't (and should't be) on the minds of a grad student. Yes a lot of these posts come off as "Heading to Cambridge. . .what about YOU!?", but I'd say a fair bit of the negative backlash is a reflection on folks own insecurities about where they have ended up.

Letting this dickbag ruin your appreciation and desire to go into research is like a future Anthony Bourdain (or however his name is spelled) being sullied by their experience working at McD's.  Or maybe not.  You have one cantankerous voice among the multitudes.  If you can truly say that his or her comments are not needed to make the thesis work, then you should do what it appears you are going to do and attempt to negotiate your way out from under their tyranny.

The only way I wouldn't have tried to kneecap this guy (figuratively. . .of course - ) was if they held some final word on whether you can move forward or not.  If there is a head to go over, jump that SOB.

If you say so. This thread has already derailed enough, no way am I taking this flame bait; least of all your ludicrous chicken sandwich ipso facto argument. . .

Thank goodness there are people who can actually do math in this world who dismiss such outlandish comments without actually doing some research first (population the competition is drawing from, historical proportion of men to women in the field of interest - yanno, the pesky stuff).

If it turns out that this is a significant difference, then yes you can dance a jig at the gender bias (something tells me you haven't done that).

Two people find that comment disgusting (and not simply churlish or immature): you (gee I wonder why) and the tightwad it was directed to. Good game.

Sorry, I was merely addressing personal snark with personal snark. Feel free to continue thread combing for posts to Rep-Bomb. It's a hoot.

At this point since there is no context or a full quote of what was said, and there being little information about the OP and their cohort itself - I'm agreeing with the above: An innocuous statement that is more a reflection of rudeness/tone-deafness than anything else. Could it be more than that; possibly - but not really able to tell beyond "A member of my department called gays 'fruits'."

Dear god, the further self-inflation of the role (and plight) of the graduate student.  Sorry, but a sociology major working in workforce development helping displaced workers rejoin the ranks of the employed - that is public service.  Grading papers or providing office hours for undergrads. . .not so much.   No one has a gun to any graduate students head, telling them that they NEED to get a post-bach degree.  This idea that graduate students need to be some coddled class is a tiring one (and no doubt a reason why graduate students - especially PhD's, get such a bad rap outside of academics).

No different than "workplace romances", and carries the same caveats - most people do it, and if you're going to do it, be smart about it. For people moving to new cities, I'm surprised it isn't just accepted as fact that it will happen - you're most likely to see these people more than anyone else.

ANDS! got a reaction from 33andathirdRPM in Laptop!
An SSD isn't going to help something like Matlab perform faster - it will certainly load and shutdown faster, but if that was my only benefit, I certainly would not bother with an SSD.  There is a point where convenience is not worth the price of admission.  For anyone in research, CPU and Memory are going to be what they should go for in a laptop; an SSD is nice to have but it was at the bottom of my list in terms of a new laptop (certainly not splurging for the SSD model that retailers are dishing out).

The running of multiple programs will only be facilitated by more memory and more ram.  An SSD's (and hell am HDD's) main use is read/write speeds - or "how fast can I access that. . ."  For most users a 7200RPM HDD isn't going to seem much different than an SSD in normal use.

This is not to say someone shouldn't update, but if cost is a factor, saving 200 (or 300) bucks on the manufacturers SSD option and holding off on an SSD (to see if you need it) is absolutely a viable option.

The stock HDD on my T430s makes about the same noise as my SSD which is none at all (or rather none that you should notice).  Given that much (if not all) the action on my laptop is done through the HDD, I would say noise isn't an issue.  An SSD is great for system resumes and program performance, but - as mentioned - really isn't all that needed if one isn't really using programs where the bottleneck is read/write speeds.  For data analysis the key will be CPU and Memory.

That said, SSD's (which should NEVER be bought from the manufacturer) can be had for sub 200 bucks these days which, considering legacy prices, isn't bad.  I went with a Samsung 840 120GB for 100 bucks.  More than enough OS space.

ANDS! got a reaction from yhsu in Schools ignoring emails
If you were inundated with emails asking questions about something that - in time - will be resolved, would you take the time to respond to them?  I certainly wouldn't.  Nothing in the application process says that the ad comm's or any of the instructors need to answer decision questions, certainly not "Well I see you guys have let some people in, can you tell me if I'm in?!"

As for "ignoring" questions from admitted students, much of the same applies in spirit - these people don't come into the department once a year to admit students and then go back in hibernation.  They have devoted a portion of their time to recruit students into the program but they still have other duties that need attending to.
