I was going to say it was because we are a bunch of narcissistic, overly pontificating, self absorbed crowd, then I went back and reread at least 6 pages of this thread. I realized I was wrong. Well not about the narcissim or pontificating and self absorbtion (that was mostly me and I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!). The real reason is because this is like a living document, ever changing, ever evolving, kind of like history. I know it sounds hokey but isn't that the point of history? We observe something in one light, then someone comes along and sees something totally different? Even when a new topic is inserted, we look back to previous topics and look at how other people perceived it at that time. That's my humble and yet completely insane take.

As much as the silence may suck, unfortunately the schools are usually taking applications during their Christmas/Winter break, so the AdComms need time and as sucky as it is, I would prefer they take their time to carefully make a decision.

See my issue with this sentiment is justly: you are applying to multiple school and when multiple schools want you, what happens to the other students who are also applying there? Schools can only sustain a certain #. Now you turn down schools 2,3,4 etc. They all had a slot for you and now it is sitting there. Meanwhile back at the ranch, old Joe wants a PhD too and has applied to schools 2,3,4 and no where else. The schools all chose you over him. In your world, if there is no waitlist old Joe togon't get to go grad school. If he applies the next year and gets accepted, isn't that practically the same thing as being on the wait list? Or to use the kind of logic you are implying, isn't that even more 'sleazy'? Isn't there an implication that he wasn'h good enough one year and then all of a sudden he is?

Then I can't wait to see you on next month's ... and don't worry there'll be ZERO judgement from this guy ... ok maybe something said in private ... but in public? A rock of understanding will I be! ;-)

BTW I started rereading Bill Simmons' The Book of Basketball, so I guess that counts since it is a history of the NBA.

I know it's hard and I can't begin to imagine where you are right now as far as the emotional and mental state but you have to compartmentalize these things. One box does not determine the other. These things don't make logical sense so who is to say Harvard won't give you a fair shot or that NYU doesn't want you? I say, until it is 15 April 12 or you have a rejection letter/email from that school you have as much right as anyone to believe you will be going there. Now I am not the most eloquent of speakers, so I will rely on the words of Rudyard Kipling to maybe bring you some comfort.

UNC and Duke run a miltiary history program togeather that has a lot of faculty but frankly military history can kind of ghettoize you in the historical profession, both because of the bias of academics and because there is so much poorly written military history.

Well as rife as that question is for jokes, I think you bring up an interesting point. There has to be a limit on the things that you can ask a POI because they aren't your personal reference point. Just like once you start your dissertation, you have to do the leg work it finding out the deeper stuff, I believe the same applies to the current situation.
