Yes...and this is what I, for one, want. For some, the fun is in the work/research/writing. I'm taking this with the levity it is intended, but I'm also just clarifying that many applicants do know exactly what we are getting ourselves into and the rejections are still painful even though they might be doing us a favor...

I will get into a doctoral program, whether it is this time around or another time. It is my dream and it will be what I accomplish, job market be damned. Luckily I have a supportive partner (who has a PhD) who doesn't care about what the house looks like or if we go out a lot or if I make a ton of money. My partner just wants me to pursue my dream and understands what will be in store for me/us if/when I get accepted into a program.

Again, I'm not reacting negatively, just wanted to say "yes! this is what I want!" I might be nuts but...oh well. I have no children and will not be having any. I've got my partner, pets, and history. Life, for me, is great with those elements.

Now I just must wrangle the elusive doctoral program...

As much as the silence may suck, unfortunately the schools are usually taking applications during their Christmas/Winter break, so the AdComms need time and as sucky as it is, I would prefer they take their time to carefully make a decision.

As much as I would like to, I dont believe that adcoms really look at each and every application. The applications are pre-screened and sorted according to Gpa. If you make the cut, then and only then will they consider the other aspects of the application. This is when fantastic supporting documents can help you leapfrog over the uber-smart applicants. Because the stats of applicants can change from year to year, you really dont know what the 'average' gpa of applicants is this time around. Last year it could have been A-, this year it could be B. So basically, you cant possibly know how competitive you are. For that reason, hang on to the hope that you have a chance even if you haven't heard back yet. Only a very small percentage of people post results here so I'd take what you read with a healthy dose of skepticism. ....but it also wouldn't hurt to start working on a plan B to have all of your bases covered...and hope that you wont have to use i t

I agree about the competence part b/c I am sure we ALL know someone who is dumb as rock who scored well on the test. If Saved By The Bell has taught us anything in life, and I know it has, the Stanberries of this world only care about the 1501 SAT scores and those schools suck, so go to Cal U!

See therein lies the issue: you shouldn't FEEL beholden to others b/c @ the end of the day, you did your part & as sucky as it is for those who are waitlisted, their fate is ultimately still in the hands of the school b/c someone else might be ahead of them on the waitlist. Do what is best for you & I know I haven't been waitlisted so it might seem hypocritical on my part but really I will feel this way EVEN if I'm waitlisted b/quite frankly I'm torn between the schools I've applied to & I would go to any of those schools. This isn't an easy time for anyone b/c we are dealing w/such an important time in all our lives. We need to have as much compassion for our fellow applicants be it those who are waitlisted, rejected, OR have been accepted b/c not everyone has a dream school that they'll give anything to go. Somehow this will all work itself out, so again I implore you my fellow applicants to pull back a bit from the intensity train
