If you want that PhD bad enough, it won't be out of your mind. I can promise you that. I have gone quite a few months forgetting about the PhD and doing totally different things in the last 2 years (and during a year abroad as an undergrad). But that "fire' always came back.

What other's have said, but I think it's worth emphasizing the problem with the "cash cow" masters from places like Columbia and Chicago. I'm sure there are some people who have wonderful experiances from them, but I've heard a great many bitter stories from people who went through those programs. The usual story is that the professors are not particularly invested in the masters students and in the context of the shadow of a large PhD program a masters student can get lost.
I have a terminal masters, and I think it was quite valuable, but I got it from a program that does not grant PhDs. IMHO, you are thinking in a good way with this history/literature masters because a masters should do something a PhD program either can't or doesn't do. So a masters in public history before a phd in a more traditional program is a solid credential.
My masters is in a field that my PhD granting institution doesn't do. I have used it to grain a specialist credential.

Hey thanks everyone!
The news made my day and all your comments are icing on the cake!
Seriously, oseirus and all the other lovely people here on the gradcafe boards, I formally extend an open invitation to anyone who'd like to get away for a few days in LV. My boyfriend and I may not live close to the Strip (everyone assumes that if you live in Vegas you reside IN a casino or ON the Strip) but we have a guest room and clean sheets. Just give me a heads up to make sure I'll be here!
As I'm making my plans in England for the summer, I've come to realize how important it is for grad students to stick together and help one another out, especially when travelling!
Now back to doing something academic.

OK, so this is big news for me. I received a GAship starting the Fall semester! I've been paying for my MA with loans, so I'm ecstatic. I know many of you are old hats at the joys of TAing/GAing... but I was passed over so often I was beginning to get a complex. And even though it was given to me because someone else declined it, I'm confident that it meant I was just next on the list..and not LAST on the list. In other news...my semester is finally OVER! Now to start prepping for those apps. Why do I always feel guilty if I'm not DOING something scholastic? Any of you feel that way?

I see once again there is a classic regional bias against my native tongue of Gibberish. We Gibberers will suffer no more! Gibberish for ever!

Does anyone currently live by Columbia? Could someone tell me if the surrounding apartments are filled with Columbia students etc. I want to live within walking distance, but I don't want to feel like I'm in the middle of campus when I go home (Greenwich sort of feels this way whenever I visit, I almost feel like an NYUer). I lived on the UES this past summer and loved feeling like a regular New Yorker..

Oseirus, I don't think hbeels was intentionally discriminating against you or other speakers of Gibberish. The fact that BCEmory08 isn't listed under 'Italian' in hbeels post leads me to believe she copied and pasted the list from an earlier post that didn't include the last few additions. That said, you have my support and solidarity!
