I have a rule as well ... except it's never trust anyone who roots for the diabolical Pink Sox ... and why do I call them Pink? That became the ubiquitous color of their fans' hats across this nation as "fans" of the "long suffering" Sox suddenly came out the woodworks in aught-four ... as a TRUE Yankee fan (Steinbrenner Field baby!), I must despise these infernal ne'er do-wells who dare to tug on our awesome caps ... tis the price we pay for being so great I guess? Long Live the Yankees and a pox on the Sox of Boston

hey now! Having lived in California and grown up in Boston, I would like to argue the exact opposite. But then, I'm sure a lot of it stems from personal preference: I don't drive (don't even have a license) and appreciate a good walking city with great public transit. I happen to love the cold and the snow, which I understand makes me odd. But most of all, there are few places in the United States that can surround you with history the way Boston does, and I tend to see a greater respect and interest in the field among my friends from Boston than anywhere else. And in general, I prefer East Coast museum culture (although I'm also quite fond of San Fransisco's.) Finally, our sports teams are just better.
That said... I'll likely be applying to Berkeley and Stanford, along with a slew of East Coast schools

We did discuss that slightly ... Homer's involvement in the New Black Panthers was something I couldn't get too many sources to even talk about off the record ... they feared retribution ... but one source .... whom we shall call "Sart Bimpson" was very helpful with some details

if it makes you feel any better I have offered what I thought was bangup great advise but in reality could've led to some awkward moments. Please don't take anything personal on here ... try to treat it as an academic forum ... you aren't being challenged personally but rather the notion that you are presenting is what is being called into question (if that makes any sense)

it's worse when you have acceptances and don't know where to go

And I thought this thread was about developing relationships with POIs.
If some of you want to make conversations about getting through graduate school and professional development into snarkfests and/or popularity contests, that's your choice.
However, don't be too surprised if members on this BB who offer guidance based upon the mentoring and training they've received, as well as their experiences make choices of their own.

I believe the words of one Mr. Homer Jay Simpson evoke my sentiments in this matter: " Never. I can't live the button-down life like you. I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles. Sure, I might offend a few of the bluenoses with my cocky stride and musky odors - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called "City Fathers" who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about "What's to be done with this Homer Simpson?""

Screw anyone who advocates being in the "real world" ... they can have their misery ... at least academia is a thing of passion

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but it sure has helped me ...you will require the following things, another human being, a timer, a bucket, 2 pairs of handcuffs, a chair, a blindfold, and a bathroom. Now go into the bathroom, set the timer for 30 mins, sit in the chair have the human being blind fold you, then handcuff your hands and feet to objects so as to prevent you from moving. Now after this is accomplished make sure they dim the lights and gently turn on a water faucet as to make the water drip into the bucket super slowly. Have them either be super silent or leave the area whilst this goes on for 30 mins. After the time elapses, They will uncuff you and remove the blindfold. I suggest doing this 4-5 times a week if you ever find yourself stressed out about grad school applications. I hope this helps!
