here is how you should feel (seeing as I've been #2 for the second month in a damn row ... I NEED to come off of this list) ... you should feel a sense of shame ... a sense of 'WHY ME' ... a sense of 'eff it' ... then a sense of 'haters goin hate' ... then sense of 'hey, that is interesting, I'm going to reply back to that comment' ... and the cycle goes on and on ... like the ouroboros

I have no idea what any of you are talking about, but I get the distinct feeling I should curl up in a ball in the corner and start muttering "I need an adult, I need an adult."

Self care is so very important under stressful conditions. Sometimes it is important to take a step back from the situation and gain some important perspective. You may get in, you may not. You may have to make some tough decisions in the next few weeks or you may not. But no matter what, there will not be a scenario that you CANT handle.
In the larger scheme of things, this is just one hurdle in your life and believe it or not, it will not be your biggest. It just feels like it because you are in the 'here and now'. If you look back at your life, consider all of your accomplishments. I'm willing to bet that you can think of several examples where you had to do something at least twice to get it right--whether it was learning to ride a bike or perfecting an academic achievement, it took time and patience to get it right.

You still have plenty of time to hear back from your schools. If you get in, that is wonderful. If you dont, it is not the end of the world.
If it helps, think about your plan 'B'. Although it sucks to get rejected, knowing that you can do something about it is empowering and motivating.
Most importantly, remember that getting into the perfect grad school does not define you as a person nor should it measure your sense of self worth. It is just one aspect of 'you'. If you get in, be proud because you have every right to be. If you dont get in, be persistent and know that you can and should reapply. And, be proud. This process is not for the faint of heart and getting this far says a lot about you as a person, regardless of the result.

On another note pertaining to that mystical AHA conference. I went to the one in Chicago in January. That place is crazy. Sooo many people bustling around the lobbies and hardly anyone in the actual panels. It was pretty obvious that people are only there to see old friends and critique other scholars in their panels if they are feeling particularly vindictive.

Wouldn't call it a skill ... just an unfortunate side effect of being a terrible who needed to deflect attention from the questions raised in any given class ... but thank you for making my day though Monster :-)

for me the worst part of getting in hasn't been the "getting in" but rather the failed chance to rail at teachers and post a "this is for ALL those who doubted me". Unfortunately, since HS teachers have expected this of me and I have done my darndest to not only lower their expectations but to be unbelievably underwhelming. I ran away from academia and did other "things" and yet even my high school teacher has been like "what took you so long"? Now the pressure is on again. In the parlance of the 1337 speakers ... FML

So does this mean we're losing you Goldie? Or are we going to do that whole post-graduation thing of 'oh yeah, we'll def stay in touch' and then 15 years down the road (i.e., in 2-3 years) we see you at the supermarket (or in this case at the mythical AHA conference) and you look worn down from the 3 kids (3 weeks straight of staying up to do all-night research) and then we just remember the good days? OR are you going to still REALLY stick around here? Inquiring minds would like to know.

I have the exact opposite experiance with professional soldiers. I treat them with respect and demonstrate as best as I can that I want to treat their profession fairly and they respond with integrity. They are intrigued that an academic historian who doesn't have military experiance is trying to understand what they have to contribute to larger society. Perhaps it helps that I am not writing about battles or logistics or even really in the "war and society" school.

But yes it does help to lean to deal with the buzz words and acronyms.
