psychgurl got a reaction from atlplanner in To admitted students, when will you notify your boss that you quit?
Did you give a time commitment when you took the job? I would still tell them as early as possible, otherwise it appears that you are just too cowardly to tell them. If you committed to, say, 2 years but can only put in 8 months total, I would gear up for some heat from your boss....I still feel like it's the right thing to tell them early, though.

From what I've heard from past students (my boyfriend & his classmates) and current UChicago undergrads, it's a cash cow for them. If you have PhD offers on the table, take them instead. I don't think a master's counts for much in a lot of disciplines when applying for PhDs. Also, I've heard this program doesn't give a lot of individual attention to students.

I would personally approach with caution.

I hate how angry and entitled some people are on this thread. Just be glad you get back feedback, but recognize that it's still a crap-shoot process.

My third reviewer said I was a strong applicant, but I didn't get squat. My hope is that there was a holistic process that awarded applicants who were better qualified overall than me, rather than who got the luck of the draw with reviewers. If it means that I get high marks and don't win the award, but someone else who is actually better qualified than me (holistically, not just in a two-line review) got it, then great. This is exactly what the system should be - there's no way to "normalize" different reviewers.

So stop complaining you arrogant entitled fools.

Also this time is earlier than other years-- usually it goes to 5am. Here's to hoping that we don't have to be up all night!

I can't fathom how confusing it would be to be an applicant from Bradley Bond's lab right about now

Also he's a dean, so now I sound crazy

Haha for the record last year's thread was at 21 pages when the maintenance announcement was made. We are pushing 31 pages with nothing to show. We are quite a paranoid bunch.

Took a nap to try and take my mind off of the GRFP - woke up in the middle of a nightmare - I got an email from NSF saying that I would have won a fellowship spot but instead I'm being disqualified because my margins were off by .0001 inches. Anyone else having crazy GRFP induced nightmares?

    Amen...

I don't like when I see the 169-V GRE person asking if he/she needs to re-take and get a 170. Likewise, I don't like seeing the mile long research experience person that needs a pat on the back by asking if they "have a chance."

Reality is most of us have done the best we could with the situations we were in, and comparing with each other sucks, especially since we don't all get the same opportunities and luxuries. I for example play a sport, some need to work full time, others have children, etc.. We can only spread ourselves so thin.

Sorry for the rant, and best of luck to all the applicants! Remember, we are here to help each other, not to compare the size of our.... Vita's

The only part that seems behind to me is retaking the GRE. I contacted POIs early October, finished statements sometime around then and edited for about a month. Leave time for lots of people to read your statements & give you feedback, preferably people in the academy. I struggled with staying calm.... I wouldn't compare yourself too much to the folks on gradcafe. You'll drive yourself nuts.
