stereopticons got a reaction from luz.colorada in How to manage getting a cat in grad school?
I haven't had problems finding apartments that will allow cats. The deposit can be high but I haven't noticed that the rent itself is higher. I had two cats while getting my Masters, and they helped my sanity somewhat. I have three now. I'm not looking forward to moving with them, but I love them anyway.

@iDance Exercise is great. I lift, I spin, I walk. I don't run. But I do a lot of active stuff. It makes me feel better and is good stress relief. I'm still fat. And so people assume I'm lazy and sit on my ass all day and do nothing but eat. Which is why comments like the one I quoted above piss me the F off.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I went through something similar the first time I applied--he was going to re-enlist and not go with me. I didn't end up getting in anywhere and he didn't re-enlist, so I avoided the situation but it was extremely hard at the time. It'll work out--if you have to do long distance, it's manageable. Feel free to message me if you want to chat or vent more privately about this.

Turns out someone WAS reading my application when I replied to this. I left for lunch and came back and had a email asking for a phone interview! Now I have something concrete to focus on.
Also, word games may be the only way I'm maintaining sanity.

I'm with you. I felt better when I had applications to submit. At least something was in my control. Yesterday, I spent an hour checking all my application status pages to make sure everything was received even though I've already done that and knew it was. Today, I'm worrying that my SOP wasn't good enough. At least you're not alone?

Start applying for jobs now. These jobs will be competitive, so apply to everything you can. Join listservs, search job boards, and ask people to forward jobs to you as they come across them. Working for a year (or several) is not a bad plan B at all, especially if you find a place where you can publish and get good recommendations.
Most impotantly, though, if you want this, don't give up. This is my fifth round of applications, and I finally got in. If this is what you want, use this time to improve yourself and your application. If you aren't sure this is what you want, use this time to figure it out. Hang in there!

Just a note about VA positions-- mine was a great experience, but VA is currently under a hiring freeze except for special positions, so these will be very hard to come by this year.

Also, give these last 3 your all. Go into each interview as far it's the most interesting program ever (because people can sense if your not excited). There were two schools I thought were towards the end of the list and after visiting them I fell in love with both. Keep an open mind and give these last ones a chance to impress you.
I'll just add that I only applied to 5 schools that were almost perfect fits for me. It allowed me to take time to thoroughly tailor each application packet and I had an unusually high interview rate. I know applying to many programs can be helpful, but it can be hard to tailor that many applications.
I'd agree that a project manager position would be ideal, just in case. Veterans Affairs pays a generous amount for these positions but working in a small lab at a university can help with pubs/presentations. Make sure wherever you get hired that they'll let you be productive!

I watched a short documentary many, many years ago about a relatively heavy man who ran triathlons. Was very interesting. He never lost any weight, despite being incredibly active.
Can't seem to find a version of it online.

Not gonna lie, this got way too tl;dr for most of the pages. I feel for the OP because it's true that many campuses are not friendly to people with disabilities (overall). One of the activities for the PT students at my undergrad was to go around and point out all the ADA barely-compliant things on-campus. It was so bad, and we had people with disabilities on-campus regularly for research. This is a relevant discussion that should happen for all-level students and all disabilities--it shouldn't be where does have it, but why doesn't everyone have an option? (PS: please don't focus on this sentence. This was a rhetorical question. I really don't want to get into this, and I probably won't check any notifications if this is quoted after I've said my next little bit.)
Now for the PT part (and this one's for everybody)--being active has been linked to better brain function (and then sometimes it hasn't been, yes, but the better studies seem to present decent correlations right now). I'm not saying lose weight--honestly, you do you. From a clinical standpoint I wouldn't say that, but this isn't the clinic and no one here asked for that advice (unless they did on the 4-or-so pages I didn't read). Finding a way to get active that you like will help your studying and your performance scholastically. Personally, I'd rather remove my own toenail with a spoon than run, especially on a treadmill. So I dance, do yoga, and, occasionally, when I feel like it, I lift. I enjoy doing those things and they're great ways for me to get a break when I feel like my brain is fried. Find something you like to do that will give your mind a break and allow you to get refreshed--Tai Chi is an awesome way for people of many activity levels to get out there, and you can even find youtube videos if you don't want to go to or can't get to a gym that provides it. Don't worry about doing it "right" unless you're planning to educate others or you want to for yourself. Getting up and moving is great in any form. Can't stay on your feet for whatever reason? Try chair yoga! That one's even good at your desk during breaks. Find something that works for you and work it into your routine--your brain will thank you.

You could always just eat like 300-400 calories less per day if it's such an issue for you.

Agreed with stereopticons, Harvard implicitly carries more weight with its name. If both are equal, I'd go for Harvard.

stereopticons got a reaction from HiFiWiFi in Fasting in Grad School
@spectastic my advice to the OP is, as others have said, seek advice from a professional such as a nutritionist. You're interpreting my statement about needing to eat protein as "you must eat excessive amounts of protein and/or eat protein exclusively". All I said was that you need to eat protein, which is accurate, and then you proceeded to talk down to me by explaining that "sugar in fig newtons is different from oranges" and then calling your incorrect interpretation of my statement "stupid and wrong". You should go back and read @GreenEyedTrombonist'S last paragraph again before offering your supposed "best advice". Here, I'll even put it here for you again:

Dude. No. If you are exercising, and the OP said she is, you HAVE to eat protein. Lean protein (chicken, fish) or protein shakes, but if you're not eating protein, you're just going to burn off all your muscle.
Also as @GreenEyedTrombonist said, everyone has different needs. What works for you may not work for other people. Fasts make me end up eating more but they do work for some people if done right.

First acceptance, two rejections (one from Emory which I didn't care for, the other from NYU whose program is brand new and needs help so didn't care much for either). Awaiting 5/8 schools now..! Good luck everyone!!!

Program: Clinical Psychology PsyD
Date of Notification: 2/21/17
Method of Notification: Phone Call
Thoughts: I'm over the moon. I've applied for so many cycles, the first time I applied was in 2008 as a undergrad senior! I can't believe I finally got into a program that provides funding, just feels so surreal.

Program: clinical psych
Date of Notification: 2/06/17
Method of Notification: phone call followed up with email
Thoughts: This is my third round applying, and I never had so much as 1 interview in previous cycles, and now I've had 4. I'm a little in shock and just so relieved that this is finally happening. Absolutely loved the program, however I absolutely loved one other program I interviewed with too. Still waiting on word from that one, so once I hear back from both of them I'll know where I'll actually be going!

Date of Notification: 1/11/17
Method of Notification: personal email
Thoughts: This is my second time applying to grad school and I'm really, really glad I didn't get in the first time. I'm a much stronger applicant now, and because of that I got into my dream program.
School: University of Virginia
Program: community psych
Date of Notification: 2/11/17
Method of Notification: automated and personal email
Thoughts: Pretty excited to get in, and my advisor/the faculty/the grad students were all really great, but ultimately not the best fit for my interests and career goals. Wrote a really difficult email yesterday telling the PI I was declining the offer.

That worries me as well. It is pretty interesting to see Weiner's Attribution Theory at work on something as small as a result post though. I think the little things like that have taught me that I personally fit in in a much more laid back type of environment. One that of course pushes for success but isn't as cut throat competitive within the program.

Might I suggest happy ramen? Real ramen can be delicious and not nearly as bad for you as the packets you can get to make at home.
Now I want to go to a ramen or noodle place.
