I would agree with the above poster in that I would not at all assume the professor doesn't like you based on what you've said.  They are super busy, and if POI B was taking the time to "woo" you, he would probably be spending more time on another student.  Even a professor that accepted me and wanted me to come took a long time to respond to emails, and while some grad students I've emailed responded right away, others I never heard back from.

It's an unfortunate coincidence that they student and professor are both not responding to emails, but unless there is some other indication, I would not think that means they don't like you.

Dropping contact like that is unprofessional and irritating but, unfortunately, not rare in academia (or in any corporate job hunt, for that matter).

In addition to the great advice above, I'll just point out that even if POI A read your materials and decided he doesn't want to work with you, it doesn't mean he "doesn't like" you. Poor research fit (or whatever caused him to disappear) shouldn't cause personal dislike and won't make it awkward if POI B accepts you.  On the other hand, did you make a racist joke? Call his daughter a "handsome lad"? Then he might actually dislike you. But in the absence of other factors you haven't mentioned I think you're reading too much into this.
....also, this probably won't be comforting to hear, but if you really did do something specific to make POI A personally dislike you then POI B definitely knows about it too, or will soon. Admissions aren't done in isolation and I'm sure they'll talk to each other. Also, academics are the worst gossips.

You should be prepared ask the potential advisor what CURRENT and UPCOMING research projects they have in mind.  This is one of the most important question you can ask as an applicant.

Amerz got a reaction from HigherEd2013 in 2nd (or more) Time Applicants - What's Your Feeling This Year?
Last year I was a mess, the whole process took so much out of me. I felt like I was going to have a heart attack everytime I hit a "submit" button, and then was on-and-off manically confident and then depressively self-defeatist. In the end I didn't get in to any of the 6 schools I applied to, but really, who could blame 'em. I was all over the place with the programs I was applying to, and they were pretty much all top-tier "reach" schools. I wanted schools and programs that sounded good, not that necessarily fit me.

Anyway, this year, like most of you, I've gotten more research experience, been published, presented at a conference, gotten MUCH better letters of rec, and put a lot more thought into where I'm applying. I also put a lot of effort into striking up a rapport with professors before I even applied to the school.

I haven't finished submitting all my apps yet, but of the 5 I have, I have one interview so far and one almost-definitely-maybe interview (the prof there told me not to worry, he is "on the admissions committee and [tends] to be loud". So we'll see.

But at least this time I don't feel like I'm going to have a coronary at the ripe old age of 25.

Be prepared with questions you want to ask them - this is probably the question I prepare for the most ("What questions do you have for me?"), because I want to sound like I'm familiar with their work, the university, the department, and what grad life entails in general. I've only had two interviews so far, but both of them lead with this question.

Amerz reacted to piccgeek in What you think the adcoms are saying about your application
I have this idea that the adcoms look at my application, look at each other and then say:

    "hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!"

Then they take a few moments to collect themselves, then someone starts laughing again, then everyone's hysterical again, and then...

"Oh man, that was good. I needed that."

Then they toss it aside and start looking at some apps that are, you know, worth their time and attention.

(I am getting more paranoid every day.)

Possibly the next season of Star Trek: TNG.

Or maybe just a lot of chocolate.
